BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

But he should still get his signing bonus, depending on how his contract was structured. He'll only get his CHL stipend + signing bonus until his contract actually kicks in (once he's on either the AHL or NHL roster for 10+ games and isn't sent to the CHL).

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Congrats to the kid, undrafted to ELC out of camp as an 18 year old like this is virtually unheard of.

from Aaron Portzline:

"We’ve asked the NHL’s central registry to find out who was the last player – if there (ital) was (end) a last player – to sign an NHL contract directly out of a AAA Tier 1 program. Many players get drafted out of Tier 1, but then play a year of junior or college before they sign and turn pro. Kole Sherwood might be the first to sign directly out of AAA. Ohio AAA Blue Jackets director Ed Gingher and Sherwood’s agent, Jeff Boston, think he’s the first. Maybe it’s because he was playing AAA Tier in the Midwest, which isn’t as heavily scouted as USHL, major-junior or even high schools in Boston or Minnesota. Maybe its because he’s from Columbus, which despite the likes of Murphy and Kuraly and Cassels and Roslovic, has only started to make inroads on the national scene. Either way, Kuraly slid through the cracks. If the NHL can determine if Sherwood is the first, we’ll pass that along."

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

2018 recruit Jake Wise is one of two U.S. '00 skaters invited to the IIHF Development Camp in Vierumäki, Finland. The camp's Global Skills Challenge Summit is a qualification event for the 2016 Youth Olympic Winter Games. Wise is excepted to return to Central Catholic HS for his sophomore year after scoring 41 points in 25 games to lead the Raiders and earn SB Nation's Mass HS Rookie of the Year. He'll play in the USA Hockey Select 15 tournament in Williamsville, NY, beginning next week.

NHL Central Scouting Futures List for 2016 draft includes incoming freshman D McAvoy and 2016 forwards Keller and Bellows.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Just out of curiousity... Bobo Carpenter had similiar PPG in the USHL last year to both Letunov and JFK who are both second round draft picks. Yet Carpenter doesn't get drafted at all. Why is this? At 5'10, while certainly not large, isn't tiny either and I doubt he would be overlooked since his father played in the NHL.

His speed and skating ability are questioned by NHL teams. He's got a heck of a release and a heavy shot, but NHL teams are worried he's too slow to get open at the next level.

OK, thanks. Well the upside is that he should stick around BU for a few years.

Shush you!

If he can do it in USHL, which he did, he can do it at BU
Many in Hockey East can't make a USHL team, he didn't just play either, impact player on very good team. The skating knock comes from 85% of the lazy scouts who repeat what they heard couple years ago. The vast majority of whom have never had an original thought...
He scores, which will be needed after this off season

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

With five points yesterday and four more today, 2018 recruit Jake Wise is the USA Hockey Select 15 development camp points leader with 15 in four games, five more than anyone else.

Jeff Cox @JeffCoxSports:

Jake Wise (BU) is good role model for how other top young prospects should play. While some coast through shifts, he brings it each shift

Wise's skill and physical tools are undeniable but his vision, hockey IQ and motor are off the charts. Really impressed me at Select 15s.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

From twitter:
Jeff Cox retweeted Jashvina Shah
Junior Bruins source has confirmed Ryan Cloonan will be heading to BU in Fall. Fmr Maine commit.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

There are so many stories on Piccinich/Cloonan going around twitter right now from "reliable sources" it's hard to figure out what is going on right now until the dust settles.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Cliff notes?

Piccinich is either going back to his USHL team in Youngstown (Jashvina Shah and Jeff Cox), signing with OHL London Knights (Over the Boards), or at this point still at BU but may still leave (Jeff Cox 2nd tweet.)

The only thing kind of constant is that Ryan Cloonan would be coming in '15 instead of '16 to replace him on the roster.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I had heard a while back that BU was encouraging Piccinich to spend another year in the USHL and then to return to BU, presumably so that he would be in a better position to contribute. On the one hand, I can see why the OHL option may seem better, since it wouldn't be as much of a step back as going back to Youngstown. On the other hand, now that it seems less likely that a hockey career awaits him (just based on the fact that he was a fringe player last year), wouldn't it make sense to be sure to get the education while it is being paid for (at least partially)?

Huh, I thought we were expecting Piccinich to be one of those guys that makes steady improvements each off-season until he becomes a key contributor as a senior. This would be disappointing news.
