Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Wasn't his brother committed to Notre Dame before reneging and going Major Junior? How good do we feel about this commitment?

I'd heard about a year ago that the younger Tkachuk has always planned on the NCAA route and wanted to follow his dad to BU.

Hockey Prospects scout Russ Bitely tweeted: Was told other day Tkachuk bros. are different where one would go OHL & other NCAA route. Days after Matthew '97 heads north Brady '99 to BU.

Over The Boards tweeted:
-99 F Brady Tkachuk (STL U16) commits to BU. Big get. NTDP-bound son of Keith Tkachuk, huge upside. Skilled, assertive. Our #9 uncommitted.
-Tkachuk had a lot of interest from Big Ten, NCHC + other heavyweights in Hockey East. Was a 4th rd pick by London OHL, brother signed there

The season ends with a Clark Cup championship for 2016 recruit Kieffer Bellows, who scored the game-winning goal (short-handed & unassisted) as Sioux Falls beat Muskegon, 4-2, to sweep the best-of-five series. Bellows scored 9 goals in 12 playoff games, including six goals in the last four games and the game-winner in two of the Stampede’s series-clinching games. During the regular season, he scored 33 goals, most ever for a 16 year old since the USHL became a Tier 1 league. After a slow start with four goals in 19 games, the league’s hottest goal-scorer rang up 29 in the next 39 regular season games. The Stampede’s youngest player, he finished two behind league co-leader and 2015 BU recruit Robert Carpenter, who had 35.

Going to be very interesting to see how Quinn manages a team with so many Chiefs and perhaps not enough Indians.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Draft profile of Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson, whom Central Scouting ranked #31 among N.American skaters, movin up from #39 in the midterms. Apparently the reviewer was unable to determine whether JFK will be a "Chief" or an "Indian." ;)

BU adds goalie Max Prawdzik for next season. 6-3 netminder from Andover, Mass., led the Brooks School to the 2014-15 New England Prep Large School championship with a gaudy 1.25 GAA and .944 save percentage, with 8 shutouts in his team's 21 games. First team All New England and ISL league MVP. In 2012, he was selected to attend the USA Hockey Strelow National Goaltending Camp

Also played last fall for the Neponset Valley River Rats 18Us, where he was a teammate of 2017 recruit Patrick Harper.

Good academics - always good to see. Seems like a good pick up for insurance, perhaps he can make a push for a bigger role?

More details about Prawdzik

From his prep coach, Dave Ries:

Max is a poised, competitive mentally tough kid. He's still raw...he has a lot of potential. Max was a big reason we won the Large School Championship this season. He's got great technique, moves pretty well and can handle the puck to start a breakout. Max needs to put on some muscle, add some explosiveness and adjust to the caliber of Hockey East. I'm excited for him for earning this opportunity and definitely think his best hockey is ahead of him.

Last NE Prep All-Star goalie to play for BU? John Curry, Taft.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

USHL announced its rookie all-star teams. 2016 recruit Kiefer Bellows named Rookie of the Year and first team Rookie all-star, while Robert Carpenter named to 2nd team.

Kieffer Bellows (F), Sioux Falls Stampede

The 2014-15 USHL Rookie of the Year netted 33 goals over 58 games, setting a USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present) record for goals by a 16-year-old. He was 19th overall in the League in scoring with 52 points (33g, 19a). He went on to score nine goals in the playoffs, including four game-winners, to help the Stampede capture the Clark Cup. The product of Edina High School in Minnesota is committed to play college hockey at Boston University.

USHL All-Rookie Second Team

Robert Carpenter (F), Sioux City Musketeers

He appeared in all 60 regular season games and tied for first in the USHL with 35 goals, the most by a Musketeers player in the Tier 1 era (2002-present). The 18-year-old finished seventh in League scoring with 63 points (35g, 28a). He produced 27 points (13g, 14a) on the power play and had six game-winning goals. The native of North Reading, Massachusetts is a product of Austin Prep School and is committed to play college hockey at Boston University.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Interesting that the 7th leading scorer in USHL is on the second Rookie team?

My impression without doing much research is that there were a lot of good rookies this year. Bellows beat out Brock Boeser, the high-end prospect for this years draft, even though Boeser had 68 points, 17 more than Bellows.

Tweets from Jeff Cox ‏@JeffCoxSports:

-Big win on recruiting trail for Boston University as US NTDP U17 goalie Jake Oettinger commits to Terriers. Every top program wanted him.
-BU staff continues dominance on recruiting trail. Oettinger is big goalie, great numbers w/ NTDP, huge get for BU stealing kid out of Minny.

Over The Boards ‏@OTBPuckWatch:

-98 G Jake Oettinger (@USANTDP) commits to BU. Huge add in net for Terriers, 6'3 MN native had a great year at NTDP with 2.57 and .916 SV%.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Some details about Oettinger.

Before joining the NTDP U17s, he led Lakeville North to the Minnesota large school state championship game, only to lose to Edina with future teammate Kieffer Bellows scoring a pair of goals.

OTB reporting that Oettinger is now 6'4" and 200+ lbs.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

BU recruit Kieffer Bellows has been added to the USNTDP U-18 team for the upcoming season http://www.usantdp.com/news_article/show/523360.

The U18s will be at Agganis on Oct. 16 for an exhibition game, so BU fans will have a chance to see Bellows, newly committed goalie Jake Oettinger and Clayton Keller who led the U17s in scoring and was called up to the U18s for the World championships along with Oettinger.

Bellows was recently named USHL Rookie of the Year and set a record for most goals (33) by a 16 year old since the USHL became a Tier 1 league.

Rogie - I feel like there hasn't been much buzz about Sean MacTavish in quite a while. How did he do this season? Still due on Comm Ave this fall? What is his draft year?

Two seasons ago, MacTavish led the AJHL in scoring with 72 points in 60 games and was Waterloo’s first pick in the USHL Phase 2 draft. He suffered a pre-season back injury and never put things together in Waterloo (7 assists in 31 games). He was traded to Madison and then again to Lincoln, where things finally began to click for him (7 points in 14 games). He’s a late ’94 birthdate and so no longer eligible for the draft. Haven’t heard anything to suggest his plans have changed.
