BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Ty Amonte, who is a ’98, and younger brother, Tristan, play for Tony’s Thayer Academy team. He was a junior this season. Both of them also play for the Cape Cod Whalers 16Us (also coached by Tony) who were in USA Hockey’s Tier 1 nationals this weekend. CC didn’t fare too well. Ty led the scoring with 1+1. I haven’t seen anything connecting him to BU at this point and he was not included in OverTheBoards’ Oct. 2014 Select 70 list of uncommitted.

As far as recruiting prospects who are sons of former Terriers, Matthew Tkachuk (who decommitted from Notre Dame) and Chad Krys are at the top of the list. Both play for the NTDP U18s,with Krys a recent call-up from the U17s. Tkachuk would be for next season and Krys for 2016 if they commit. Also on BU’s radar is ’99 Brady Tkachuk (#11 on the OTB list), who was at NTDP Evaluation camp last week along with David Farrance (a slam-dunk to make the U17s) and Logan Cockerill. Farrance also played in the Tier 1 16U nationals, leading his team with three goals in four games.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

2016 recruit Kieffer Bellows scored his 30th goal of the year for Sioux Falls. USHL tweeted that is the most goal scored in a season by a 16 year old in the USHL's Tier 1 era.

Looks like he is having quite a season. Is he challenging Keller as the top forward for the 2016 group? Overlooked by the USNTDP? I guess he will play in the USHL for one more year, correct?

That’s a nice problem to have. Bellows’ size (6’0”, 190) probably makes him a more desirable NHL prospect than the 5-9 Keller. In The Hockey News’ Futures issue, Bellows is projected as #8 for the 2016 draft—two ahead of Matt Tkachuk, another forward BU hopes to land. The THN scout wrote: “Seeing what he is doing in the USHL is special. Creative, dynamic, skilled guy and he’s fearless.” Hockey’s Future posted an article about Bellows yesterday.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing college hockey, and I grew up watching the Gophers,” Bellow admitted.

But the University of Minnesota didn’t make the cut. Neither did the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, who chose Bellow in the seventh round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. Instead, Bellows committed to Boston University for the 2016-17 season.

“I was lucky enough to make the team here, and it has been a privilege to play for Coach Eades,” said Bellows. “As soon as I stepped on Boston’s campus, I fell in love with it. I love the style of Coach Quinn, he’s one of those coaches who will sit down with you and focus on every single guy.”

Keller, who has been compared to Zach Parise, led the U17s in scoring (25-34-59) by a wide margin before his call-up to the U18s—as was the case with both Eichel and Matthews during their U17 seasons. So far, 5-7-12 in seven U18 games. Both he and Chad Krys are expected to be added to the U18s for the World Championships.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

2017 recruit David Farrance, Syracuse Jr. Stars, accepted an invitation to play for the NTDP U17s next season. Also on the list is a familiar name and reported BU recruiting target, Brady Tkachuk.

A left-shot defenseman, Farrance was the MVP of the USPHL 16U division.

Farrance, a big baseball fan, said last week that he still remains committed to Boston University. "Who wouldn't want to live in Boston, to live a mile from Fenway Park," he said.

2015 recruit Charlie McAvoy signed his NLI today, while in Switzerland for the World U18 Championships. A projected first or second round pick in the 2016 draft.

Congratulations to @SRuggiero27, @tterry28 and @CMcAvoy44, who each signed an NLI earlier today! #CawlidgeHawkey

Happy to have Grzelcyk and hopefully Danny O' back in the fold. Hate to sound piggish but where does this leave us with available scholarship money if a certain legacy recruit falls into our laps?

Legit question. On the other hand (and I don't like to make assumptions) is that even an issue given what I would guess it that legacy's families financial position?

The former NHL guy in question has been generous to BU. If the legacy recruit chooses to follow him, there won't be a problem.

Jakob Forsacka-Karlsson was on The Pipeline Show today. Missed the last 12 games with a concussion.

they also take the position that if he is worth recruiting than he deserves a scholarship. they dont pay so team can use the money to bring in more competition. they are parents first and foremost. if you think they are going to be full payers and others getting scholarships you are dillusional

Never suggested the player in question would come without a scholarship. If he picks BU, there's a slot for him.

Another goal for Clayton Keller at the World U18s. Second goal in USA win over Czechs.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Too bad we lost out on Tkachuk. Seems like he is developing into a really good player. Last time we lost to London, the player ended up going #12 overall...

Now let's just make sure we get that other "son of a former BU player". :D:D

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Hockeysfuture.com on 2016 recruit John McDermott:

106. John McDermott, Center, Westminster (USHS)
6’0″, 174 pounds, Darien, CT

He may not be on your radar, but I can assure you that John McDermott is in the sights of NHL scouts. McDermott is a gifted athlete, and was one of the youngest players at his prep school. He is regarded as an elite-level skater who drives possession for his team, one trait coaches gravitate towards.

He has a ton of potential, and has been trending positively as the season went along. He announced his commitment to Boston University for the 2016-17 season. As a player who has been difficult to contain, it may be difficult for NHL teams to resist adding him to their prospect pool in June.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Less than a week after older brother Matthew Tkachuk chose to sign with OHL London over college hockey, younger brother Brady Tkachuk, a left-shot forward, has committed to BU, most likely for 2017. A product of the Jr. Blues system, like 2016 recruit Clayton Keller, Brady scored 15 goals and 28 assists for the Jr. Blues 16U team in the Tier 1 Elite league. Next season he'll be in Ann Arbor with the NTDP U17s, joining another BU 2017 recruit, highly-regarded Syracuse Stars defenseman David Farrance. More on tomorrow's blog post.

Birthdate is 9-16-99, so he misses being eligible for the 2017 NHL draft by one day. Like Jack Eichel, he'll play his freshman year before being drafted.

Wasn't his brother committed to Notre Dame before reneging and going Major Junior? How good do we feel about this commitment?
