Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

According to several Tweets, 2017 recruit Logan Cockerill has been added to the 2015-16 NTDP U17s roster, joining two other BU recruits, Brady Tkachuk and David Farrance. Cockerill, who had participated in the NTDP evaluation camp in March, played for Belle Tire 16U last season. He committed to BU after a strong performance at the Beantown Spring Classic, reportedly receiving full scholarship offers from BU, BC and Northeastern.

Rogie - the blog lists Cockerill as a 2018 recruit. If he attends the NDTP the next two years, he would then have one more year before 2018. Not too many players play somewhere in between NDTP and D-1 (Olsson being an exception). Does this mean he will likely try to accelerate and come in 2017?

defkit--That should have been 2018, as also shown on Chris Heisenberg’s recruiting page and the College Hockey Inc. recruiting list for BU. I know there have been other NTDP players who played a year of juniors after two seasons in Ann Arbor. Frankie Vatrano is one who comes to mind and I’m sure there are others. If he’s done with high school after his U18 season, there’s flexibility for him to arrive in 2017, should any early departures create an opening. For now, he and Jake Wise comprise the 2018 recruit class.

FWIW Cockerill tweeted that Ann Arbor was going to be his home the next two years, so he is planning on going somewhere else in '17.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson talks to USA Junior Hockey Magazine about his game, about BU and hopes to play for Sweden in the WJCs.

He was a third team USHL all-star with 53 points in 50 games and was one of the two MVPs of the 2015 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Future Considerations' preliminary 2016 draft rankings has three BU recruits in the top 24: Kieffer Bellows #17; Clayton Keller #23; and Charlie McAvoy #24. Of those on the list who are eligible to play college hockey, Bellows is 3rd, Keller is 5th and McAvoy 6th. BU recruiting target Chad Krys, at #6 overall, is the top NCAA-eligible player.

Has BU ever had more than one player/recruit go in the first round of a same draft? Lots of time for things to change, but imagine if three went, even four if Krys commits!

No, never two first rounders in one draft, but several instances of a first and a second.
--1990 Keith Tkachuk (1); Alex Legault (2)
--1991 Scott Lachance (1); Mike Pomichter (2)
--2002 Ryan Whitney (1); Brian McConnell(2); Dan Spang (2)
--2007 Kevin Shattenkirk (1); Colby Cohen (2)
--2008 Colin Wilson (1); Corey Trivino (2)

There was also a year with a 1 and a 3: 1994 Jeff Kealty (1); Chris Drury (3)

Most picks in one draft? Eight selections in four different drafts: 1987 (including Mike Sullivan, Joe Sacco and Shawn McEachern); 1989 (including Scott Cashman, Dave Tomlinson and the Bavis twins); 1993 (including Jay Pandolfo, Shawn Bates, Mike Grier, Chris Kelleher and Jacques Joubert); and 2012 (including Matt Grzelcyk, Danny O’Regan, Robbie Baillargeon, Doyle Somerby and Sean Maguire). Several years with seven picks, too.

BU’s first-ever first-round draft pick? David Quinn in 1984, picked 13th overall by the Minnesota North Stars.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Tough losing a talented goal-scorer that BU's recruiters had identified before anyone else> But he's already 18 and would have been a 20 year old freshman in the 2017-18 class for which he was targeted. Of course, he might have been bumped up if any of the 2016 class forwards changed their plans, but no guarantees there. It sounds like Columbus didn't want to miss out on a talented hometown kid after his strong development camp showing and they didn't want to chance losing him in next June's draft.

So does this mean he is at worst AHL-bound, or could he end up in Major Junior (not sure if Ohio is OHL or QMJHL territory)?

Too bad but exciting for him for sure.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Interesting. Say CBJ ID him earlier and draft him. Does he still go NCAA in that scenario?

He would be able to, but it would not be likely unless BU moved him from the 2017 incoming class to 2016. And even if they did it's not a guarantee.

Congrats to the kid, undrafted to ELC out of camp as an 18 year old like this is virtually unheard of.

The Jackets had been watching him for a couple of years with the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets, and tried to get an extra pick in this year's draft to get him. Kekalainen says he offered a 6th-round pick next year to get him this year, but couldn't get a taker. Camp was the kicker, but they weren't gonna let him get away.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

So if he ends up in London, does he still get paid? He must, right? Otherwise, what is the use signing an ELC and giving up your eligibility? Same situation with Sonny Milano last year, right?
