BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

i agree with you about Mack but if BU wins sunday i don't see how they can avoid putting Mack at #1.......... I see another typical BC-BU close , hard fought game on sunday. the only game i can recall that was similar to what you say is the 2007 game 6-2, Gerbe's hat trick. In fact, and i just did a little research, since the 2005-2006 season they have played 8 times in Conte with BU holding a 4-3-1 edge

I have to admit that record surprises me. I'm probably mixing in some prior year memories.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

Its early but we have to start considering how Coyle rates as one of the biggest busts ever at BU based on his recruited status. Not only is he a dog but he is dumb dog out there.

I haven't seen enough games to know the "dumb dog" reference (bad penalties), but he is nowhere near one of the biggest busts. He is on a better scoring pace than he was when he was the HE ROY last year. Sure, one goal is short of expectations, but then again his uncle had 5 goals halfway through his sophomore year and ended with 31. Perhaps people's expectations increased with his great WJC performance, but it's not like he was expected to dominate the game as a freshman.

A lot of sandbagging going on here. If BU plays like they did last night, i'd anticipate a good, close game.

As for why MC isn't #1, not sure where they started the year, but they played some real cupcake non conference games.

I understand your quarrel. MC is for real, though. Of course, the entire season will play that out.

When you start being encouraged that you almost beat Merrimack at home, you know how far the program has fallen under Parkers "leadership".

If you're referencing his penalty at the end of the third, that's an awful example as that was a disastrously terrible call. Also, the comments about Mack have FAR more to do with the Mack program itself than anything to do with Parker or BU.

they should not have lost to nd in the ncaas. cannata's crash and choke in that game was the only reason they didn't advance (my opinion) to st paul.

With the BU "tradition" and facilities they still have been surpassed by MC over the last few years on the ice. Programs going in different directions. That doesnt trouble you? Wow nice standards! Ever to Excel BU!

Tradition of Excellence! ;)

The funny thing about judging Merrimack and their undefeated record is that we have recent and familiar evidence that a team starting off the season on an undefeated tear doesn't always indicate lasting quality.

BU ended Mack's season in 09-10 and was a better team, last year MC was a better team. So based on one season and another one month period in which Mack has defeated zero teams with a winning record, Mack has "surpassed" BU's program? This has nothing to do with me being satisfied with anything BU's done, or my standards for the program being low. I'm certainly not at all satisfied with the results of this and the last two seasons, and it's disgusting to me to see how wounded the BU name is right now. But that has nothing to do with my earlier comment, I'm simply commenting that Dennehy unexpectedly turned a bottom dwelling group of guys into a contender in a couple of years, a credit to him and his staff. To say the MC program has surpassed BU is utterly ridiculous, however.

At the moment, in its current state, MC was better than BU last year and could very well be better this year. Do with that whatever you want...

Actually, BU's profile of wins last season at this point was better with the two Icebreaker victories. I think Mack definitely has a top quality team this year, but if you look at their schedule, there is somewhat of an argument to be made that BU was the toughest game they play before January 1. Only Union or Colgate would have a case.

And lets not forget that we did finish ahead of that better team in Hockey East last year.

I agree that we should not be satisfied with where the team is at right now (And I'm sure neither the players nor coaching staff are), but there are definitely some on these boards who do everything they can to make things seem worse than they are.

or you start to realize how far Mack has come which i think from this seat is more startling (and i dont buy that the BU program has fallen to the depths some have expressed on this thread , see 2009)................ya, i know, some will say this is another sandbagging post:eek:

Fine. I'll be surprised if MC misses the NCAA tourney like BU did last year after a similar hot start.

Having seen both teams last year and the fact MC was in the HE title game and NCAA tourney, they were a better team than BU despite finishing lower in the HE standings. If you guys think you have a better team than MC this year, fine with me. We'll have to wait and see.

I wasn't saying BU was a better team last year, just that looking at the profile of wins of both teams, BU's was a bit better. That said, I too would be very surprised if MC finishes the season as BU did last year, then again, I knew we were overrated but didn't think we were as bad as we ended up. MC was the better team last season, that's hard to argue.

I was not saying we were the better team last year, I was just pointing out that we were not that far out of it as some on this board would have you believe.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

BU has 14 NHL draft picks. Merrimack has two. I realize some very good college players get bypassed in NHL draft for age and size, but in my opinion (as an MC fan), BU has fallen so far since the 90s with the exception of the 09 team. Very sad (as someone who always cheered for BU in Beanpot).

Also, to comment on MC so far this year. They are deep and very solid defensively. I will not be satisfied unless there is another return to the Garden and the NCAAs. I will say this. MC's schedule has been very weak, but they have taken care of business so far. No losses to HC or UMass-Amherst. No. That is not a shot at BC and BU, but it's just pointing out you still have to win the games.
