Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.
I'm not trying to completely ignore the fact that there are FA issues that go beyond any quick fix at Brown. Or, that the program needs a greater commitment towards supporting athletics. Or, that the first person people tend to point a finger at for a losing season is the coaches.
But when it has been publicly known that a coach applied for another job for two consecutive years and has let the program fall so far as to not having a single league win this far into the season, I find it hard not to point my finger at Digit. What’s stopping another job opening from coming up that will leave her players and brown supporters disappointed yet again? It’s one thing for people to have to deal with a coach who wants to be there. But it’s another to have to deal with a coach who doesn’t even want to be at Brown. Has Digit actually gone out and made this statement? No, but actions speak louder than words and I don’t know what else going out and applying to other jobs says. The team already has to deal with a lack of commitment from the school, they don't need to be subjected to a lack of commitment from their own coaches as well.
I wouldn't say this years team is 'awesome', but although inconsistent there has been marked improvement - 7-12-1. When a new coach like Whittet comes in like on the men's side it does seem to rejuvinate everyone in and around the program. He'll nail a good recruit or two the first year and we'll seem some strides - but in the long run there are major issues with things in the administration (and things like the AI and FA) that will remain a challenge for any coach at Brown unless they get a bigger commitment to the program - same for the men as the women.
I support the Brown programs and whoever is coaching. You hope the administration is doing their due diligence in reviewing the programs every year, but I don't have a son or daughter playing there like a lot of the posters here so I can see where the frustration level and sense of urgency is turned up. In the end, I think it is more about the players than the coaches. You get a Yann Danis in and Grillo is a genius who graduates a senior class with more wins over 4 years than any previous four year class at Brown. When he doesn't his break out sucks and no one can stand their 'endless cycling' in the offensive zone. Digit gets a Katie King and Tara Mounsey and she's off the Nationals and one of the winningest coaches in women's hockey! Now she's not getting them and she's forgotten how to coach, has a rotten personality, and cuts players with malice.
My pee-wee team is only .500 this year, rumors are i'm probably going to get replaced by the town dentist who was captain of his high school team! Ouch.
