Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

With the semester starting, I checked out the team's roster as posted on the team website. I don't know when it was posted but it has the incoming freshmen with the returning upperclassmen, with no omissions from the roster at then of last year. If all matriculated, 31 players!!

Junior Trevor Smith (25) won't be on the roster this year but will serve as the team's video guy. He's a smart kid with a good attitude.

Mike Borge changed from #28 to #10. Chris Zaires changed from #10 to #22.

The freshman forwards are Matt Harlow (9), Ryan Jacobson (18), Matt Lorito (19), Massimo Lamacchia (61) and Chris Draper (91). I'm not a big fan of numbers above 29 except for goalies. I think they attract too much attention and put too much pressure on the players wearing them. Remember how Brian Lawton was given #98 (one step below Wayne Gretzky?) as a rookie? It was definitely NOT a good idea. Let's reserve the high numbers for the Gretzkys, Lemieux and Bourques of the hockey world.

The freshman defensemen are Kyle Quick (4), Taki Pantziris (13) and Joey DeConcilys (24).

Freshman Greg Tang (5) will fill in at either defense or forward.

Whether there'll be thirty-one players on the opening night roster is still unclear, as, due to Title IX restrictions, each team is given a maximum number of slots.

FYI - USHR is reporting recruit Zach Aston-Reese has decommitted.

Didn't Brian Ihanack have a high number? How many players can Brown carry on the roster without creating Title IX problems? practically due to lockerroom space?

Ihnacak was #19, I think. In the Roger Grillo era, the highest number we saw was 35, and that was for a goalie.

I'm not sure how the Title IX participation number is calculated. Obviously, a sport like football skews numbers, since more than 75-80 men are on the team; I don't know if it's about opportunity as much as the number that makes the team. Perhaps there is someone out there with a more specific understanding of the regulation.

Brian Ihnacak wore number 19 as a freshman, and then took number 18, which had been Brent Robinson's.

Re. Title IX
As far as I know, an institution can be in compliance with Title IX either by demonstrating an ongoing effort to achieve gender balance (for example, by adding new sports for women) or through "proportionality." Brown has taken the proportionality option. Thus, the total number of male and female athletes participating in the intercollegiate program has to reflect the male/female percentages in the undergraduate student body within one standard deviation. It's not proportionality by sport; the intended proportionality applies to the full intercollegiate program. Each team is given a certain number of slots with the ultimate goal of achieving proportionality for the intercollegiate program. Because football gobbles up a very large number of male slots, Brown must also offer more sports for women than for men; otherwise we would never achieve proportionality. Nevertheless I'm not a specialist in Title IX matters. Since members of the Athletics Department read this Forum, maybe one of them can correct me and/or post a more precise explanation than mine.

It's interesting that, after all the progress this team made last year, it's getting NO respect whatsoever in the ECAC Pick the Standings thread.

I don't think we're a top 5 team or anything, but I can't see us NOT improving on last year.

Well as the saying goes, dogs know best what to do with polls.

It will be interesting to see how the season unfolds. Hopefully the Bears can take some inspiration from how they are viewed. I expect they will prove a number of people wrong. I think they have the potential to end up in the top half of the conference this year, getting home ice, and potentially competing for a first round bye. But I am a supporter, and an optimist.

It surprises me that the concensus is that Colgate will rally from a 4 win conference season and end up in a home ice playoff position based on last years playoff run. We had the playoff run a few years ago, and while it was a fun bunch of games, it isn't necessarily easily sustainable. Time will tell. Go Bears.

Looking at NHL and AHL team websites and blogs, it lloks like Aaron Volpatti will start the year with the Canucks; Harry Z is on the bubble with the Flyers; and David Brownscheidle may survive final cuts for Adirondack Phantoms. A friend of mine who follows the Phantoms said David has been a major surprise and if Harry Z goes down to the Phantoms they would probably be on the same line.

Will there be once again a scrimmage with Harvard before the season starts officially?

I'm not sure if everyone has heard, but the 2013 East Regional will be played in Providence! Can't wait! I'll be buying tickets the second they go on sale.

How can a scrimmage with Harvard benefit the team if they're going to play them a number of times during the season?
