Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Brian Ihnacak was one of the best examples of Roger Grillo's inability to develop players, not to mention proverbial inflexibility. Brian came to Brown as an eighteen-year-old freshman, who still had some growing up to do, but who also had outstanding hockey skills. A good college coach should play a part in helping the student athletes under his guidance to develop both as players and as young men. Athletic and personal development often go hand in hand. In Brian's case, Grillo showed little interest and failed on both counts.

That is in your very humble opinion of course. As discussed, your knowledge, like ours is limited to watching the games, talking to other alumni over hot chocolate, and maybe the occasional player. You're not suggesting that you are on ge the ice and in the locker room every day grinding it out with the team are you? The coaches must have shown some ability and flexibility to help develop him his freshman season (followed a decent sophmore season). Maybe the coaching staff did drop the ball at that point as you suggest, but we have no idea if he was considered a hard working player or lazy by the coaches, had an attitude problem, or didn't get along with his teammates As one writer mentioned, maybe he just couldn't recapture the magic he had with some very talented players he was with early on. Another post here suggests there we much larger issues that he does not want to share. There are hundreds of things that go on with college kids that could affect their play, but at some point they also have to take some personal responsibility. There were a number of freshman on this years team who did not leave up to the hype or expectations, and some second year players who had a big drop off in their play. I'm sure we are not blaming Brendan (yet!) for this lack of development?

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Reading some of the blogs, etc covering Vancouver Canucks, it does not that Volpatti will be suiting up for any of the Stanley Cup finals games. My question:

Since he played 15 games during the regular season, does he get his name on the Cup if Vancouver wins?

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Great question!

I hope so, because then that gives us a Super Bowl winner (Zak DeOssie '06), several Olympians (most notably Katie King '97, USA women's hockey) and a Stanley Cup Winner. Not too shabby for a school that is supposed to be all about academics and the arts!

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

The criteria for getting your name on the cup is:

1) playing at least 41 regular season games
2) playing at least 1 game in the SC Finals
or
3) the team can petition for special permission (ex: player fails to meet Options 1 and 2 due to injury or extenuating circumstances)

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Volpatti will meet the requirements. I'll be rooting for Option 2 anyways! :D

Thanks. But for Volpatti, I would be rooting for the Bruins. Now I am a Vancouver Canucks fan. I also like the idea of 2 Ivy/ECAC alums on the team, Chris Higgins from Yale being the other.

Doesn't look like Volpatti will see the ice....so you might as well switch your allegiance back to the B's! We have two ECAC alumns on the current roster (Thomas - VT before they switched to HE....and Peverley from SLU). There are also two Ivy alumns in the front office in Sweeney and Chiarelli - but they are from Harvard so I may be arguing against myself.

Go B's.

There are two HARVARD alums working for the Bruins??!!

Ok- now I have justification for rooting for the Canucks other than being a Rangers fan! :P

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Weird that we're not just playing at Yale on the Friday before they come here. Maybe they think the teams need a travel day for a trip that's less than two hours.

I wish we could play Harvard on Senior Night, since we almost always lose to Dartmouth under Bobby Gaudet.

And are they trying to kill the Mayor's Cup? A New Year's Day matchup during Winter Break for both schools? Attendance can't possibly reach 1,500- and I'm only that generous because it's being played at Schneider rather than Meehan, and PC generally draws a few hundred more than us. There's just no conceivable way that Rhode Islanders will get off their hungover butts and leave the college football Bowl games on HD (and, for some people, 3D) TV to watch a college hockey game. And, since there will be no students on either campus other than other winter athletes, it will only be the diehards for each team. I miss the days of Nolan Schafer vs. Yann Danis; Meehan used to rock when PC came to College Hill, and Schneider was always lively as well whenever we headed over to Smith Hill. It's sad that someone with too much power seems intent on killing what was once a great series, both on and off the ice.

It's PC's home game, so it's PC's call as to when to play the game.

So then are both schools intent on killing the MC? Because it's been on a Tuesday for several years now. At least it's on a weekend now, I suppose...

Bruno: Any chance that one or more of the Saturday 7pm home games might be played at 4pm? I was surprised to see no 4pm home games in this schedule after a few over the past years.

Usually, any afternoon games are arranged prior to publication of the composite ECAC schedule; however, there have been rare occasions when Brown and a visiting team have agreed, prior to the start of the season, to move from a 7:00 p.m. to an afternoon start on a Saturday in order to facilitate the trip home for the traveling team. But my guess is that the present schedule times are pretty much locked-in for the 2011-12 season.

Another consideration for an earlier start would be if national television were involved (specifically NHL Network). This is why the RPI/Cornell game at RPI was moved back to 4PM last year. I don't know if you have any potential National TV games on your radar for this year.
