Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now
Euler:
Are you going to the games this weekend? If so, looking forward to your comments on Brown's play.
A few quick thoughts about the weekend.
Brown came out a little tentative against Dartmouth, but had a very good third period despite being victimized by a defensive mistake with three minutes left in the game, resulting in the second Dartmouth goal.
The Bears displayed far more zip Saturday afternoon, playing a strong game against a very talented -- and fast -- Princeton team. The adjustments to the lines produced immediate results. The Hathaway-Lamacchia-Jacobsen line was the most effective, scoring all the three goals. Bobby Farnham added needed energy to the first line, with Mclellan and Smith. Jeff Ryan played a spirited game after being moved from the fourth to the third line, with Juola and Zaires. The two freshmen defensemen, Kyle Quick and Joey DeConsylis, really impressed me. They're fluid skaters with very good passing and positional skills.
Mike Clemente was excellent in both games, coming up with big saves at crucial moments, including during a late Princeton power play. His technique was outstanding.
Garnet Hathaway appears to be poised for a very good season. He's stronger and faster, and has developed an excellent understanding of both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. I've liked him from the very first time I saw him play as a freshman, so it's rewarding to see his growing maturity as a player.
And it's impossible not to like freshman Massimo Lamacchia. The little guy has terrific, albeit still somewhat unpolished hockey skills. He checks, he scores, he kills penalties -- everything at high speed.
The Bears are faster, deeper and more skilled this year. With freshman Chris Draper (who has been described by one of the coaches as "a big Bobby Farnham" -- in terms in skating ability, energy and dedication) ready to join the lineup next weekend, the team will look even faster. And when freshman Matt Lorito comes back from a forearm injury, the team will be able to rely on three highly skilled centers, who can both distribute the puck and score.
