Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Not playing like that. And, of course, let's not neglect to mention that somehow Yale lost 7-6 to a previously 0-11 Sacred Heart team. Not a good night for the Ivy's future Pairwise. Again, ick.
Hey at least Harvard won!

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Three goals in four games...

It's not particularly smart to build an offense (particularly the power play) around Dennis Robertson shooting from the point. Every team is putting pressure on him. He either mishandles the puck (result: opponents' shorthanded goals or, at a minimum, a good offensive opportunity) or his shots miss the net 80% of the time.

Give guys like Mike Borge, Jake Goldberg, Jimmy Siers and even Marc Senecal a chance.

Where's Jerry Keefe? :-)

Looks like the the 2 upcoming games next week with Yale will have 2 teams coming off bad losses and with something to prove. I'm sure both Coach Allain and Coach Whittet will have both teams ready for prime time. Hopefully, Brown will respond.

But first Brown will have to deal with Holy Cross this Saturday...

Brown's lack of offense is cause for concern. The Bears are generating shots, but most of them are coming from bad angles, and after the goalies have made adjustments (particularly on shots from the point).

A few unconventional ideas, for the sake of discussion:

I'd move Jeff Buvinow to offense (excellent puck control skills, accurate wrist shot), try Jimmy Siers at defense (much needed toughness, good lateral mobility), give a lot of ice time to Kyle Quick and Joey DeConsylis.

On the power play, I'd play Buvinow as often as possible at the point (maybe with Kyle Quick), move Dennis Robertson and his booming shot to wing, play Jake Goldberg at wing (again, accurate wrist shot -- on the power play his footspeed won't be an issue).

I'm sure somehow or other Brown will pull out of the current doldrums. Enough talent to win, great coaching staff, not to mention a terrific faculty advisor.

Yup and Mike's slip of the tongue is exactly why Brown should take HC very very seriously. HC could easily end up taking two more games from the ECAC this weekend if Brown and Clarkson do not take them seriously. They are a whole lot better than AIC despite the fact that AIC has improved considerably.

Not overlooking HC at all. Ws against Yale is what counts.

Euler: I agree fully with you about Quick and DeConsylis. Quick was solid against Army and DeConsylis was frustrating U and RPI all night. I too would give Siers a shot, perhaps Saturday. I liked his physical play the few times I saw him last year and he did avoid the dumb penalties. With Crowley playing well, the loss of Carriere, who I thought was terrific last year, isn't hurting the D.

Richard: Good to see you posting. Your posts are always thoughtful.

What a disaster......shut out in three of the last four games.....Ouch!! This feels like i'm in the Brown Woman's thread from last season when it was one shut out after another!

Brown looked terrible today against Holy Cross. No other way of saying it with no crisp passing, can't get the puck out of their end, terrible shots on goal...

Yep. This team needs to get out of this slump immediately and start rewarding the defense, which has been tremendous.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

This team can't score period. The only saving grace was Cornell and Yale* lost, too.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Mike- that pretty much sums up the last few years of Brown hockey. Playing up to good opponents, and playing down to the likes of AIC and Bentley (remember THAT game?).

As for this Saturday's game, I get the impression that this 50th Anniversary thing is going to be a big deal. Hopefully Meehan will be rocking and Yale will be so surprised to see people caring about Brown hockey that they'll spot us a 4-0 lead. :)

In all seriousness, I think we'll lose Thursday in a good effort and then win on Saturday. Should be a pair of great games.

Downtown Dining - Are Haven Bros or Mike's, the mobile food trucks I have fond memories of from the '60s, still in business? I just made a bet with a friend of mine who played hockey for Yale in the early '70s on this week's Brown-Yale games. The winner chooses the place to eat after Saturday's game. I chose either Haven Bros. or Mike's, and he chose Famous Lunch in Troy (for Sunday).

Should be two good games. I am looking towards Brown, using KDiff's words, playing up to Yale, and winning one and possibly both games.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

From the radio broadcast it appears that the play of AIC and HC is behind the team and team skated well. But as has consistently happened in the past, every mistake Brown makes it results in a goal for the opposing team. Mistake free game Saturday is necessary. BTW it appears the frosh are playing well and Coach has brought them along quite well with the sophs.
