British Election 2010 - Jolly Good

Re: British Election 2010 - Jolly Good

Voting is underway. There's about 8 1/2 hours left until the results start trickling in, but there's been a bit of shocking news.

Is all of Britain in the same time zone? Is there anything left of The Empire (little bits around the globe, I dunno, the Virgin Islands or the Falklands)?

Edit: Gibraltars are British subjects still, right?

The only constituencies in Parliament are in the Home Countries. That's been true basically forever - you may remember a minor skirmish in North America in the late 18th century that "revolved" around that fact. :D

All four Home Countries are on British Summer Time, which is an hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Yes, that means Greenwich is not currently on GMT. :) That's five hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.

BBC projects a Conservative minority, 19 seats short of a majority, in which the Lib Dems actually LOSE seats.

The bare Conservative minority isn't terribly odd, but the Lib Dems losing seats would be a total shock. That might be an indication that tactical voting might have been in full effect for Lib Dem voters but maybe not as much for Labour voters.

Sunderland comes first, in maybe about half an hour's time. Right now cars are racing through the streets to the counting place, where the bankers are waiting to rapidly count those paper ballots.

The Beeb has not identified the 29 "others," not that it might impact the actual balance of power anyhow.

That would be the DUP, SDLP, SNP, Sinn Fein, and Plaid MPs, Independents, the Speaker, and possibly one Green MP or one UKIP MP.

The Speaker is non-partisan and doesn't matter. Sinn Fein doesn't take their seats and won't matter either.

I find it interesting that the first constituency hoping to report will be Houghton and Sunderland South as I live in Houghton.

And now on BBC - It's Clive Anderson, who Americans might recognize as the host of the British version of "Whose Line is it Anyway?". Everything may be made up, but the points DO matter.

The first marginal constituency - Birmingham Edgbaston - isn't expected to report a winner until around 8pm Eastern or so, although there may be some possibly telling Northern Irish returns ahead of that.

EDIT: Police have been called, apparently, to several polling stations as people are angry at being turned away because the stations closed at 10pm. Um... you have FIFTEEN hours to go there and cast your vote, and you decided to cut it close? Brilliant.

Bridget Phillipson, come on down! You just won a safe Labour seat by more than 2-to-1!

Oh, and she's 26.

I'm 26.

****.

But, as the Beeb quickly notes, down 10% from 5 years ago, and a larger vote swing toward the Conservatives than they are expecting nationwide - in a very safe Labour seat. But remember, all politics is local.

Then there's this.

Labour candidate for Sheffield Hallam Jack Scott says he's angry that people may be denied the chance to vote, but wants to find out more about what happened. He says he knows it's happened in at least four polling stations in his area and says it may leave the result open to challenge.

On one hand, that seems reasonable. On the other hand, Sheffield Hallam is Nick Clegg's seat. Stop whining, you weren't going to win anyway.

France24 broached the possibility of a Lib/Lab coalition with Clegg's price being the head of Gordon Brown. No idea if that's remotely practical.

That's been expected for some time to be the case if Labour finished third, but that doesn't seem likely now. At any rate, for that to really work, the exit polls have to be skewed more toward Lib/Lab than it is right now, as they can't currently combine to reach the magic 326 number. They can come close enough to try and recruit other parties, but I think the likelihood of drawing in the smaller parties is low - the SNP is really at odds with Labour, Plaid tends to march to the SNP's drumbeat, and the Unionists in NI are easily closer to the Tories than a Lib/Lab coalition. That really just leaves the SDLP, who may be lucky to get more than 2 seats.

Starting to wonder if these issues of voters being turned away at 10pm sharp is the harbinger of a Florida 2000 type issue given the closeness of this election.

Re: British Election 2010 - Jolly Good

61 seats for the Lib Dems -- that's significantly worse than expected right?

Well, considering they came into the election with 62 seats... :p

Some were expecting high 70s to low 80s or even higher for the Lib Dems.

EDIT: Labour holds another Sunderland seat, but this swing to the Tories is even more extreme than the other safe seat swing - this one of over 11.4%. Two Labour seats but two big numbers for the Tories.

Jesus, I just saw some old footage and 5 years ago Cameron looked about 13 years old. His wife is (or was) super cute.

Edit: I've seen more recent pics. Make that "was." :(

Better result for Labour in the last Sunderland seat, Sunderland Central. Labour went 3-for-3 as expected, but had bad Tory swings. Sunderland Central some thought might be a stealth Tory win if they lucked out, since it was a closer election last time, but the swing was only 5% or so, lower than the BBC exit poll.

EDIT: First two counts in Northern Ireland have been suspended as the area around the counts have been evacuated for a bomb scare.
