Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

So what's the word on our incoming recruits next year? From what I've read we have a small class arriving for the 2010-11 season.

I'm not aware of any source on the Internet carrying that information. It's all a big mystery until October.

Nothing is certain until JP informs Joe Bertagna of his preferences.

This usually happens around July which is also when the recruiting class in finalized but there are always surprises when practices start in September like Ronan this year. The three definite incoming freshman are (D)Alexx Privitera,(F) Cason Hohmann, and (F) Evan Rodrigues.

Is it cold enough for the ice to freeze in October? With global warming, I'd look for the season to start later each year.

It certainly has been ending earlier:D:D

Global Warming is a myth concoted by Parker to explain away the lack of skating speed and his inability to put a little jump in the players step. Everyone knows softer ice is slower ice.... :D

Thank you all reminding me about that scary place known as the interweb!:D

However, I just wanted to get some opinions of from some of the fans on these boards regarding next year's class.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

My point is we clearly have the players to win HE next year and make a serious run at the FF. It all depends on how they come together and play as a team. Chiasson,Coyle,Nieto, Connolly, Trivino, and Clendening should all be 30 point guys next year. They have the skill to be and I am sure other guys have the capability as well. Noonan was huge in that he was exactly what this team needed from him all year long but I didn't mean to imply he is going to be a Hobey finalist or anything crazy like that. My point about Clendening was that if the recruiting has dropped since Quinn left why are guys still choosing BU over BC. I don't see a drop in recruits at all. Coyle is afirst round pick, Nieto and Clendening will both go in the first couple rounds in this draft. Gil will be a later pick as well. You can say the coaches aren't getting as much of these guys but in no way are the players we are getting any less than the guys we had two years ago based on talent alone. This is only one year of their careers. Let's give it another season or two before you are saying the recruit level dropped off.

I'm with Rover on the recruiting point. Guys have been picking BU over BC and vice versa for as long as i have been following college hockey (since mid 60's). Some guys make connections to different programs very early on and decide they just want to play one program over another.

Another point that has not been raised, but has always been the case, now more than ever since the new rink was built - BU will always attract the best because they are BU. That is the same for all the top programs. The one thing i have noticed since the mid-90's though is that BU has not been getting the top snipers/goal scorers - guys like Amonte, Drury ... the sole exception has been Wilson, possibly Bonino.

This current line-up reminds me of the teams from 2000-2005, struggling to score goals again. Playing down to their opponents. Quinn definitely had an impact in getting a few of the bigger stars, but I still hang my hat on the coaching and the style of play.

I will withhold judging this team's prospects next season for HE and making as you say a serious run at the FF until Fall. It will take quite a few of the current players stepping up big time for that to happen.

Also, remember, Gilroy was a walk on Parker did not want to give a scholarship to.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

Again, I'm saying I don't see the same talent out there right now. I'll repeat that again if it helps you out. If Gill turns into the next Wilson, god bless 'em and I'd be as happy as anybody out here. What I worry about is a bunch of career 30 points scores which is fine but doesn't get you a title. Where people are drafted is irrelevant. Who else was looking at them is well. I'll repeat the supposedly highly sought after John Sabo. What separates title winners partly relates to seeing things in a recruit that other schools don't. That can work both ways, a diamond in the rough or a bust. In Sabo's case since he couldn't shoot, skate, pass, or hit people, one has to wonder what made him so sought after unless he just forget how to play the game once he got to BU.

So, I'm not saying "we're doomed" but what I am saying is we need to see some of these guys take the next step. Having watched BU hockey for awhile, its track record has been for guys to plateau or even regress at times. I do worry the recruits aren't as good. Time will tell if that has merit.

Redd, I'm asking a simple question. Do you think, based on whatever criteria matters to you, that Noonan will turn out to be a better player than Gilroy, and take your pick (Connoll, Gill etc) will be better than Wilson? What I'm saying is I'm not expecting that. If you are, step up to the plate and tell us.

Just saw this after my last post. Could not agree more. You could make the same "Sabo" argument for the supposed Fab 5 class of 2001. Best recruiting class in years and none made All-A. Whitney showed promise, but none made big jumps throughout their careers. Look at Merrimack and NU's top lines this year and ask yourself where you have seen that type performance from BU's top line the past 2 seasons?

Is it the players, the coaching? Are we over-rating our talent? Lots of questions and not a lot of good answers.

I believe that a few other head coaches didn't offer Gilroy a scholarship (the same could also be said for John Curry).

UMASS released their schedule and it is posted on their Fear the Triangle blog here so you can see we have them about the same timing as this year but the home and away have been switched

That series is actually when the UML series has been for like the last 4 years, so that's interesting. BTW, we're starting to post next year's schedule on the blog as games become official. We already know 8 games and 1 other's a pretty good assumption.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

End of the day, DW was a classy kid and took the high road. JP on the other hand as usual blamed 67% of the team for not performing. Eventually the mirror needs to be looked into.

The emperor is naked

duh

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

Note in the Hockey section of Page 2's Boston Globe that CM defenseman Marc Hetnik is coming to BU. (2012) How come this was in the Globe? Just 'cause he's a CM kid? Is he a stud? Both?
