Boston University 2011 Offseason

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

...How about the 1-0 win over Minnesota the following season?

Peter Fish night. A brutally bad BU team beat a Gopher team that nearly won the NC. As I recall, most of the game was played in the BU end of he ice.

Not so much a Fish night as a great defensive night. The Gophers were held to only 17 shots on goal (and BU outshot them 19-17).

Well, it was definitely Peter Fish night the year before in another interlocking game. My numbers may be off a bit, but I believe he stopped something like 58 out of 61 shots in a 3-3 tie against Denver at WBA.I recall it being a weeknight game right after Thanksgiving.

CBS college is reshowing the December game against bc at Agganis. Right now its 2-0 bc early on, I wonder if we'll be able to make the comeback!

I predict a BC victory. 9 - 5 feels about right. Many goals scored in the 3rd Period. I like Matt Nieto's chances of scoring a goal.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Notre Dame would be a great addition, but I'm not convinced it's gonna happen. They would need to bring someone else with them, and I don't think HE has much (if any) interest in Western Michigan.
Western would actually work quite well as a travel partner for Notre Dame. They are only about 90 minutes apart, so it would be easy to schedule travel partners to play ND and WMU the same weekend and then host them another weekend. In fact it would be easier to schedule then home and home series with Maine and Vermont (see my previous post for how they might be scheduled). Western is also committed to winning the whole thing in the next decade and while they may not reach that goal, at least they have made it. Each Hockey East team would be required to make one flight a season to ND/WMU and they would each be required to make five flights a season.

Sorry, but throwing in our lot with nd/wmu would blow. The appeal with hea is if BU craps out and has to hit the road for a qf series- I can go. Kalamazoo and south bend take that out of the equation.

Mookie votes NO.

I vote NO as well... I like the regional proximity of all the HEA schools.

+1 keep this in New England. Change the scheduling if you want, but no reason to start knee-jerk adding teams. Maybe if UConn ever gets their act together and invests in their program they could be an option with Quinnipiac, but no one outside of New England.

Re: above - it's Hockey EAST! Keep it that way!

Denver Post had an article on Paul Carey and Kieran Millan at the Avs camp. As an Alabama/BC fan, I do object to "...rivalry that can make an Auburn vs. Alabama football matchup seem civil..." - in Alabama you have to have a favorite between the two even if your first loyalty is to some other school or you don't care about football. In Boston, even if you limited it to college hockey fans, that isn't the case. http://bit.ly/colbcbu

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Any chance that all this shuffling and the fact that the so-called Super League and Big-10 will only have 6 or 7 teams lead to something like the interlocking schedule HE had with the WCHA in the 80's? Those were good times; seemed like those games often brought out the best in BU. To cite just a couple of examples, anyone remember the wild 10-6 win by a mediocre BU team over Wisconsin right after Winter Break in 88'? How about the 1-0 win over Minnesota the following season?

I remember the 10-6 game only in that I remember being VERY fired up after it. We had not been playing well, and all of a sudden we trounced a western power. What was the date? Was it by chance the same night as the Redskins winning the Super Bowl over Denver (Doug WIlliams, that reciever Sanders, etc.). I have a very vague memory of being at a party, watching that football game with little interest, and talking to people about the big Terrier win. But alas, I may not even have the right year....a few adult beverages consumed in those times...;)

I also remember Fish outdueling future (or was it past) Hobey Winner Robb Stauber that night. And Parker favorite (:D) Chris Lappin had his first career goal (second was in the OT winner over NU in the Beanpot opener in 89.)

The Wisconsin game was on Wednesday, 13 January 1988.

Reigning (1988) Hobey Baker winner Robb Stauber was in net for the 1-0 BU win vs Minnesota.

Yes, Fish saved 58 of 61 shots vs Denver in a 3-3 on Monday, 30 November 1987.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

I know the roster's not finalized, but let's talk line charts. What are y'all predicting?

Here's my guess:
12 - 28 - 3
17 - 10 - 9
19 - 18 - 27
22 - 8 - Hohmann/Rodrigues

7 - 2
13 - 4
21 - Privitera

31 - 35

Think 19 earned himself a move up to the third "checking" line that can also put up some points, maybe as an early-season experiment but possibly back down to fourth line if it doesn't work out.

I kind of want them to try this as well (depending on Rodrigues' skill level):

12 - Rodrigues - 3
17 - 10 - 9
18 - 28 - 27
19 - 22 - Hohmann

Obviously probably wouldn't see this early on, but I've read that Rodrigues could be quite the skill-guy, so move him up to that first line, move 28 down and keep that checking line just as physical and spread the offense out more, and Hohmann could make the early makings of the next Pereira-type fourth-line guy. Unfortunately would bump 8 out of the lineup, and I'm pretty sure 18 only played one game at LW last year (ankle issue?), but that's just one take.

Thoughts?

Actually, Megan played wing pretty much the entire second half, and I think he looked better there than at center. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Courtnall gets a shot on one of the top three lines, although there will certainly be plenty of competition. Hohmann and Rodrigues are both skill guys who could be impact players out of the gate, and neither one is really suited to a fourth-line role from what I've read. Rodrigues could be a top-line player in a couple years, but he has quite a bit of work to do. From what I've read, the biggest knock is that he can get lazy in his own end. Also might need to mature physically now that he'll be facing older competition.

Cisse has a lot of skill, too, but it remains to be seen if he'll actually be 100 percent. He's also a bigger body who might be a better fit in a fourth-line role than the other two rookies. I thought the top two lines both looked pretty good toward the end of the year, so I'd keep them the same to start. I know I posted my lines before on this thread, but here they are again. One minor change is that on second thought, I've decided to go with Rosen over Gaudet as fourth-line center.

Connolly-Trivino-Chiasson
Nieto-Gill-Coyle
Megan-Hohmann-Rodrigues
Courtnall-Rosen-Cisse

Noonan-Clendening
Escobedo-Nicastro
Privitera-Ruikka
