Boston University 2011 Offseason

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Sounds like an interview that would come out of National Enquirer mookie. Facts are not quite lined up but I guess that's never stopped you.

When you say he has not much of a relationship with any recent graduates...how many people are you basing that on?

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Ended my season tickets after 21 years based on results, which were succintly summarized earlier (1 FF in 14 years!), but mainly because of the change in dynamics, for lack of a better word, for BU hockey. In the 1990s, BU teams played like maniacs. For three of the last four years, they played like BU was their second or third choice of scholarship schools. I got tired of leaving the rink thinking, more often than not, that I cared more about BU hockey than the players did.
Other little things then piled on, like playing Brown on Thanksgiving weekend, or the original schedule last year that had a November Wednesday exhibition game against Sweden U-20 for full price.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

I understand passing on season tickets. I have not decided what I am going to do yet. Here are a few points to consider to the negative from my view:
1. Most tix are available up to and including day of, thus there is no reason to purchase in advance.
2. Prepaid parking is not avail for standard season tix holders
3. Food bays are inconsistently open and are among the slowest at serving on God's earth. Further, the fact that I can't get a friggin' additional cup with my beverage is horses***
4. The number of fans fearlessly wearing BC gear at Agganis is baffling :D
5. Value is a little challenged due to the number of non-compelling opponents. I would really like to see more of the TUC teams from the west in our house.
6. They are just plain expensive.

A few points to consider the positive from my view:

1. Season tickets cost less than individual game tickets and also don’t include the TicketMaster or Agganis facilities charges.
2. Prepaid parking costs the same as for everyone else, but yes, it is nice.
3. They sell baked potatoes.
4. The number of non-BU gear in general is baffling.
5. It’s hard to get western TUC teams every year with only 5 NC games available each season. Still in 6 ½ seasons they have had Minnesota, Denver, Colorado College, North Dakota (IB), Michigan State (IB), Michigan (twice), Notre Dame and Denver again this upcoming season. Not bad.
6. Yes they are expensive, but for me it is a good value.

I would say my only beef with the season tickets is that they charge virtually the same, $2 less, for a worthless exhibition game as they do for a BC game. Some better tiered pricing might do them some good.

Just part of the price the fans pay for Agganis Arena.

It's interesting that you say this because, even as someone covering the team, I felt the same way quite a few times. I don't know what's going on right now with the seemingly low (for lack of a better term) give-a-s*** level from some of the players, especially when I know that there are many, many high school kids who would love to have the chance to play at BU.

I covered high school hockey as well this year, and whenever I asked where the high school player wanted to go to college if he had his choice of any school in the world, 9 out of 10 times he said BU.

3. They sell baked potatoes.

Valid reason. I've been going to BU games since I was a baby and didn't know they sold baked potatoes at Agganis. I'm going to have to check this out next season. Do they load them with cheese and bacon?

When did you cover HS hockey and get these poll results? The mid-90s?

Nowadays you might get 2 out of 10 local kids preferring to play at BU over BC or Harvard or Michigan or somewhere else. Really.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

I find it odd that various teams price different games differently to start with. The prices to a game at Vermont are the same for every single game, whether it's against New Brunswick, Denver, USNDTP, Providence or BC. Same price period. Of course with 4000 seats there is the luxury of selling out nearly every game regardless anyways, but I always found it odd that there was differential pricing and that fans actually complained about not getting "enough of a discount". I say count yourselves lucky they don't charge you $20 for every game no matter what.

they do? where?

They were sold at the Commonwealth Concessions stands (at least on the east side) last season and were available either plain or loaded. As I prefer mine plain I don't recall what the loaded ones have on them.

Nope. Covered it this past winter. I'm not surprised that you would have no idea what you're talking about though. It's not like BU's entire freshman class for 2013 is from New England (Collier, Grzelcyk, Erne, Baillargeon, O'Regan). O'Regan chose BU over Harvard. I believe Hetnik (2012) chose BU over BC.

The 2013 recruiting class is the exception. BC has a stranglehold on elite, local talent. BU sure does well recruiting overall, but there's no arguing against BC's local success.

In 2010-2011, BC had 12 kids from Mass., 17 from New England. BU on the other hand, 5 kids from Mass., 7 from New England.

You can't forget that BC has always had more of an interest in recruiting from this area while BU looks harder into Canadian prospects. I'm just saying it's nowhere near accurate to say that maybe 2 out of local 10 kids are interested in going to BU rather than BC or Harvard.

BU looks harder into Canada because local kids tend to have more interest in BC. It ok to admit. It's always been that way (except for maybe 5 years in the 90s).
