Boston University 2011 Offseason

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Jackpot!!! (Rogie will get it)

If this kid was a discipline problem, it's probably best he never showed up to BU. Jack Parker can't clean out your locker unless you actually show up and put stuff in it.

I think the opposite Nick, had he showed up he would have been an easy target for JaPa and saved some other kids college career.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

The kid was 15 !! How do you know he was a constant discipline problem? How do you know he wouldn't have grown up and been just fine? How do you find time to take a crap with all the talking out of your arse that you do?

I guess I am just like you, on every thread and has an answer on every situation.

It is well known and documented

"Westchester Express 1995 DOB prospect Anthony DeAngelo is a certified top USA defenseman in just about any scout's book. Some even say he is a future NHL'er. But one chink in the youngster's hockey armor caused nagging concern among his fans last season - discipline issues ... "

Another time

"We were sorry we didn't get to see 14-year-old d-man and BU recruit Anthony DeAngelo, who was suspended due to a fight at his high school. "

I'd like to disassociate myself from the disciplinary aspect of this discussion. I have no way of knowing if he's a great kid or a jerk. My comment was intended to convey a lack of surprise that he won't enroll at BU.

Here's a question for you hokiedope, since you are in the know.... If this kids has so many discipline issues and they are "Well known and documented" why do you think Parker recruited him? Speculation is fine. Basically does it strike you or anyone else that Parker has to boot so many kids for disciplinary issues and yet he is recruiting "well known" trouble makers?

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

in fairness he was 15 and if he lasted a year with Carlson and he wanted him back, which he did, he probably is on the right path.
Problem is that in hockey when the word gets out, it is hard to get it to go away. I doubt BU has any major problems, I think the truth of the matter is JP makes things more public than most HC's and is quick to pull trigger. Where others keep things more in house and make them go away.

Just my opinion

"I'm not "sick of it."

I was a music major, and while I was in school a few kids (still undergrads) won auditions, and they were gone as soon as they got their bags packed. Good for them, was the general feeling. If you're good enough to be a pro, why stay in school? "

And

"Thanks!

Les, I just smashed my little toe into a table leg. The nail ended up in three pieces, with blood coming from point of impact and from under the nail; and after 10 minutes the side of my foot was as swollen as a blogger's oversharing impulse. I immediately felt really smart and coordinated, and said impressive words out loud to that effect.

Now it's ice and elevation, and I seem to be able to flex my toes with no pain. Do you suppose I should tape that toe to the next one? "

No nerd here...

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

I remember USHR writing a report from the Select 15 tryouts. They had DeAngelo ranked in the top 5 d-men, but mentioned he better cool it with his attitude. If I can find the link I'll post it.

Here is the link from July of 2010 on the USHR website:

1. Steve Santini (#2 Kelly Green) 6-2/205 - 0-1-1 - BC recruit will be playing for Apple Core (EJHL) this season. Poised. Fundamentally sound. Sees the ice well. Passes are tape-to-tape. He makes playing D look easy. Offered a spot in NTDP for '11-12.

2. Will Butcher (#2 Purple) 5-11/175 - 0-5-5 - Two way defenseman. Good at both ends of the ice. Moves the puck really smartly. Good-sized defender with some little man's offensive skills. Will be playing for the Madison Capitols Under-18s. Offered a spot in NTDP for '11-12.

3. Scott Savage (#5 Gold) 6-0/160 - 0-1-1 -- From LA Selects. Was stuck on a bad team, but you'd never know it from his pro-style demeanour. Just goes out and plays hard every shift. And when his shift is over, he skates to the bench hard. Then goes out and does it all again. A consistent effort. Offered a spot in NTDP for ‘11'-12. BU, BC, North Dakota, and Michigan are all recruiting him.

4. Anthony DeAngelo (#2 Royal Blue) 5-11/175 - 6-3-9 w/ 17 pims -- A 10/24/95 birthdate, he's going into the 9th grade and will be playing the first month of the upcoming season in the USHL as a 14-year-old. The BU recruit's skill is undeniable, but he's also cocky. He may want to tone that down a bit before taking on USHL vets. While no one's asked us, we feel that midgets, or the EJHL/AJHL would be more prudent.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Frequent reader, rare poster, ended season tickets this spring after 21 years. Responding to recent posts: does anyone have any queasiness about assessing the college and pro prospects of a 9th grader? Are there any parents here who have 14-year-old males who DON'T have discipline issues? My 10-year-old would be screwed if word got out that he copped an attitude about us not being able to take him to the latest Pirates of the Carribbean last week. I'm between sad and appalled that the height and weight and maturity level of kids who haven't hit puberty need to be projected and assessed by D-1 college programs, who may or may not get 35 games out of them when it's all said and done. Phew. Off to shower now.

Excellent post. I'd like to know how many of these 15 - 16 year olds actually end up at the college they commit to for at least 2 seasons. It seems like college hockey is the stick they use to get the desired carrot from Major Junior.

At least D'Angelo (and his family & their "advisers") made the decision 3 years before he was expected to set foot on campus. Better than a late de-commitment that could've left the coaching staff scrambling.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

congratulations to the team for posting a perfect 1000 APR score. that's academic achievement for those unfamiliar with it. while the formula is extremely flawed, still a nice achievement for the team.

With several players leaving early plus the annual (player) kickoff event, shouldn't there be some blemish on the APR?

I don't know. As I said, the formula for the APR has lots of flaws, especially with respect to transfers and players leaving early to go pro.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Talent is there and has been. Success takes more than talent though. I predict another disappointing season...there is no fun in the game of hockey for the players at BU. That is taken away on Comm Avenue.
