Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

I'd say the correct answer is in between. There were definitely one or two BU fans who felt Coyle was not a factor and that the team would not miss him (and were very vocal about that opinion). But I would say most (including myself) felt the team was worse off without him.

As a side note, I think the general feeling was that he would be a top player in the Q, given the age difference versus college. So I'm not sure that his performance or the coaches comments are necessarily going to change opinions on either side. The real test will be to see how he does at the pro level. I for one hope he is successful. I don't like the way he left the team, right in the middle of the year, but it's done and everyone has moved on.

I would comment that my perception of the people who were not going to miss him weren't saying he wasn't any good, only that he wasn't playing up to his capability...which could have been due to his desire to be elsewhere.

So, everybody was right...he wasn't playing as well as possible so it was reasonable to assume the departure wouldn't be catastrophic, his replacement wasn't going to be better and we didn't have a new player arrive so the team was worse off in that sense. Since he wasn't a real problem, the 'addition by subtraction rule' likely doesn't apply.

I would like to see the statistics represented with some measure of control variables, hockey and lacrosse players come from very different regions and socioeconomic status than basketball and football players do. Do they still have higher rates of drugs and/or alcohol use than major NCAA athletes with similar upbringings?

(Yes, this is completely off topic for the BU Hockey thread. Oh well.)

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

OK, with Kurker coming in and hopefully nobody else leaving, what will the lines be? We have five freshmen forwards coming in, where will they land?

Kurker
Lane
O'Regan
Myron
Moran

I'm hopeful that at least three of them will crack the top three lines. There are 10 returning forwards. I think three are a lock to be on the top 3 lines, and skill wise, are top 6 forwards - Nieto, Gill, Megan. On the other end of the spectrum, we have 4 forwards who are energy/grinder types - Courtnall, Rosen, Santana, and Gaudet. The last three I consider "wild cards" - Cisse, Rodrigues and Hohmann. Rodrigues showed some pretty slick moves last year and I think he has the best chance to turn into a skill forward. Hohmann I'm not as sure. Cisse is a tough read - everyone loves what he seems to have, but it didn't turn into a whole lot of points for him.

So I'm hopeful that at least three of the freshman will have skills better than the grinders.

I don't believe Ross Gaudet will be back. He was red shirted in his freshman year,I beleive there is not scholarship available to him now.

No matter how you slice it, I just don't see where BU is gong to have the experience and the horses to do much damage next year.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

BU has the strangely lucky coincidence of being the next Comm Ave team to break in a new goalie. It's worked like a charm for the two programs lately:

Schneider leaves, Muse comes in and wins as a freshman.
Curry leaves, Millan comes in and wins as a freshman.
Muse leaves, first-year starter Milner comes in and wins as a junior.

Very possible, but it clearly comes down to the freshmen, especially in net. If the pair turn into Siwiec and Gillespie, it could be a long year. But if one of them is another Millan, this team could do well. I expect that BU will get votes all over the place in the coaches poll, from 3rd to 6th or worse.

who are the pair?

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

A year ago the 2012-13 BU season was shaping up to be a pretty good one, but that was before QMJHL playoff MVP Coyle (i.e. the bust) and Leading scorer Chiasson left early for the pros, Max "Fidel" NiCastro got arrested and kicked off the team and superstar in the making Robert Polesello went from being the next Brian Gionta to the next John Sabo and was told to take a hike. You guys could still be top 4 in HE, but that's about it from what I can gather...

Nobody on the city end of comm ave was expecting chiasson or Coyle to be here this year. They were both leaving (Coyle just a couple months too soon).

Yeah, and the team actually only loses 2 of the top 11 scorers from the end of year roster, and only 3 players who registered more than 2 points all year, as well as returning all of the defensemen. If O'Connor or Maguire can replicate Millan's freshman campaign (huge if, I know) this team should do a little more than just finish 4th in HE.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

If no one else leaves and say, three of the incoming freshman skaters can make the line up AND the goalies have a good start to their college careers, the team should be in the top 3-4 of HE. It will fall to the upper classmen to do a lot of the heavy lifting for this season. I would expect a similar kind of campaign to last year if this is all correct. We could have two solid offensive lines and 1-2 grinder/ hustle lines. I'm a bit concerned about the d as it is practically a carbon copy of last year's squad. It's all conjecture at this time but gives us something to post about.

Yeah, the problem though is that only 3 of those returning forwards hit the 15 point mark last year, so it really doesn't matter if you bring back 100 forwards from last year, they're just not that good....
