Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth
I would comment that my perception of the people who were not going to miss him weren't saying he wasn't any good, only that he wasn't playing up to his capability...which could have been due to his desire to be elsewhere.
So, everybody was right...he wasn't playing as well as possible so it was reasonable to assume the departure wouldn't be catastrophic, his replacement wasn't going to be better and we didn't have a new player arrive so the team was worse off in that sense. Since he wasn't a real problem, the 'addition by subtraction rule' likely doesn't apply.

I'd say the correct answer is in between. There were definitely one or two BU fans who felt Coyle was not a factor and that the team would not miss him (and were very vocal about that opinion). But I would say most (including myself) felt the team was worse off without him.
As a side note, I think the general feeling was that he would be a top player in the Q, given the age difference versus college. So I'm not sure that his performance or the coaches comments are necessarily going to change opinions on either side. The real test will be to see how he does at the pro level. I for one hope he is successful. I don't like the way he left the team, right in the middle of the year, but it's done and everyone has moved on.
