Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Yeah, the problem though is that only 3 of those returning forwards hit the 15 point mark last year, so it really doesn't matter if you bring back 100 forwards from last year, they're just not that good....

Not sure what stats you were using, I count 5 at 17 or more (Nieto leads the returning players with 42) and 4 more between 14 and 12.

And believe it or not BU had the 4th best GPG in the nation last year, 0.04 out of 1st place and 0.01 behind BC. And that was without a player inside the national top 15 in points or ppg. This team lacked a pure sniper, but was able to put the puck in the net with regularity.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Matthew O'Connor, Youngstown USHL. 3.04 GAA .902 save% middle of pack in USHL
Sean Maguire, Powell River BCHL. 2.33 GAA .913 save% top 5-10 goalies in BCHL 19yr old

thanks , didnt mean to be lazy but i had wondered what was going to happen after Millan left (it seemed like he was there forever) so Maguire seems to have the inside track based on those numbers

Recent BU goalies with the inside track:
Rollheiser, Bennett, Gillespie.

Gillespie lost out to Curry, Brett beat out Gillespie for a year and then was asked to not return, Grant split time with Kiern for 2 months before getting injured and becoming the #2 for his remaining 7 semesters.

Am I missing anyone?

Perhaps you were counting Trivino who's no longer on the team or Noonan and Clendennning who are defensemen (I specifically stated "Forwards").

As for GPG, I'd be willing to bet that it went down after all the expulsions and defections.

*sigh* I know there's no hockey on this weekend but do you really have nothing better to do on a holiday weekend in May to blather on about how terrible you think BU will be next season?

I wouldn't worry too much about it (not that you are), but the last time I heard carltonbarrett tell a team that they weren't going to be able light the lamp was about North Dakota just prior to the 2010-2011 season...the Sioux were 2nd in the country in scoring that season at 4.05 goals/game. I just hope that BU saves all of their goals for conference play...or at the very least forgets how to score November 2nd and 3rd. :p:D:D

....yet in the end, a lot of good those 4.05 goals per game did them :D:D

Gotcha, I was using the entire roster, because BU's offense is very reliant on D scoring that seemed applicable to me.

They actually scored 3.77 GPG in the 2012 portion of the season, scoring 3 or more goals in 17 of 22 games. So comparing that half of BU's season with everyone else's full season they would have been the best in the nation by 0.17, which would have been the biggest gap between the first and second highest GPG teams in D1 since 06-07. And off of that roster the only contributors gone are Chiasson and Connolly.

You actually inadvertently just made me more optimistic as I go to bed than I was when I woke up, I had never looked at these stats.

yeah, but if you start with a strawman it is more effective to limit the scope only to forwards, maybe only left handed forwards, between 190-200 lbs...hailing from Spain.

Next, we prove Obama will get 100% of the popular vote, the stock market determines the weather, the Spurs will win every game from now until the end of time and the SEC will dominate college football for the next 20 seasons.

Ok, that last one might be true.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

OK, with Kurker coming in and hopefully nobody else leaving, what will the lines be? We have five freshmen forwards coming in, where will they land?

Kurker
Lane
O'Regan
Myron
Moran

I'm hopeful that at least three of them will crack the top three lines. There are 10 returning forwards. I think three are a lock to be on the top 3 lines, and skill wise, are top 6 forwards - Nieto, Gill, Megan. On the other end of the spectrum, we have 4 forwards who are energy/grinder types - Courtnall, Rosen, Santana, and Gaudet. The last three I consider "wild cards" - Cisse, Rodrigues and Hohmann. Rodrigues showed some pretty slick moves last year and I think he has the best chance to turn into a skill forward. Hohmann I'm not as sure. Cisse is a tough read - everyone loves what he seems to have, but it didn't turn into a whole lot of points for him.

So I'm hopeful that at least three of the freshman will have skills better than the grinders.

Unless Cason Hohmann is prepared to take a big step forward (hopefully he’ll spend the summer at Chez Boyle), BU’s biggest need remains at center. My guess is that O’Regan and Myron are the leading candidates.

O’Regan (21-35-56 in 27 games at St. Sebs’, 4-6-10 in 14 games for the NTDP U18s) is considered strong on faceoffs and a good puck distributor. His play in the World U18s earned a very positive review from Chris Peters, of US of Hockey, who did play-by-play at the U18s.

Daniel O’Regan — The lone non-NTDP player on the roster may have been the biggest surprise of the tournament. O’Regan has some incredible puck skills and creativity and may have been Team USA’s best center at the tournament. O’Regan had four points including a dazzling goal against Sweden’s Oscar Dansk in which the American forward put his skills on display. After picking up a loose puck, O’Regan skated in and deked Dansk out of his jock before stuffing it five-hole. O’Regan has a high upside because of his puck skills and good hockey sense. As he builds strength, he could become an offensive force. Committed to Boston University.

Peters also gave a strong review to Matthew Lane who also was a standout at the Worlds

FWIW, here’s what USHR wrote about Myron when he committed last fall.
Myron, a tall, lanky kid with the frame of an NHL-type center, is a strong skater who has shown a lot of finish in the BCHL. He was #3 on our list of Top Uncommitted NCAA Prospects (USHR News, 10/25/11), Myron has the potential to be a top two line center for the Terriers, which, should Charlie Coyle opt to go pro (not a foregone conclusion), would fill a very immediate need.

At the time he was centering Moran and high-scoring Merrimack recruit Wade Murphy. When a shoulder injury ended his season, his line was 17-25-42 in 26 games. He also skated for Canada West in the World Junior A Challenge.

Moran was a big surprise in the BCHL last year after failing to make Indiana (USHL) in a tryout. 18-28-46 in 39 games including several GWGs. Then he added 3-11-14 in 14 games for BayState (EJHL) after he’d been traded to the Alberta Junior League and decided to come back to Massachusetts instead. My guess is that BU thought he’d become a John McCarthy type—especially on the leadership side—but perhaps there’s more upside.

FYI
Moran was traded there because the team/org he was with in BCHL was a train wreck. old owners had tons of off ice issues/lawsuits etc going on and focus was not on team. Total cluster ****
He told them he was leaving thus the trade to an org who took a shot he might come back

Victoria held a fire sales and traded nearly all its top players for "futures." The official story was that as a result of numerous injuries--including Myron's--they decided to focus on the future. Wasn't aware of the lawsuits, etc., you mention.

Just saw on Twitter that Clendenning signed with Chicago.

Now if the team decides to bring Hetnik in, instead of pushing him back a year, they have the same number of bodies with one fewer scholarship used (Hetnik will not be using a scholarship). Kevin Roy please?

Looking more and more like a rebuilding year at BU - sorry Scarlet :D

p.s. you're about one more pro defection/expulsion away from being in the position of having to fight for your lives for a HE playoff spot!

Dude, what is up with you the past week or two? Did Jack Parker sleep with your wife last week?
