Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Here is the list of the top 101 players with the most career minutes/game since 1957 for players who played in more than ten games. Also note that players were not given ten minutes for game misconducts and disqualifications until the eighties. Of the 101 players on this list 7 played this past season.

Sean, you do a great job with the BU stats. Question re: Gryba. Is he Hockey East's career leader in penalty minutes? Just wondering if MC's Bigos has a chance to surpass him.

Thanks.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Ruikka won the Eilberg Scholarship so it leads me to think he is coming back. Maybe a Masters in Mathematics to go with BA in Mathematics and Bachelors/Masters in Economics he is finishing up now.

We need him to come back to keep the team GPA up. :)

Maybe his thesis could demonstrate how playing shorthanded is bad, playing even strength is good and playing a man up is better.

Perhaps he could cross tab the W-L percentages of teams with their penalty minutes and drill down from there.

I'm thinking of sections titled :

Stupid Penalties and their impact on team performance
Penalties in the last 5 minutes of the period and how often they bite you in the *****
Penalties right after your team has scored, a good idea?
Penalties against top ranked teams in key games, do they hurt more than penalties against the U18 national team?

We'd need somebody getting a Masters in Organization Behavior to also do : " 'Flatness'; root cause and remediation".
This would no doubt include the study of games in which a seemingly qualified team shows up and underperforms against ethe predicted outcome as forecast via data from contests against similar competition.

This is how team doesn't begin a game "flat." Should become required viewing for the Terriers moving forward.

Thanks to candycanes99 for preparing the video, which illustrate's mh82's new Terrier Tales feature article about the 96-97 "A Few Good Men" season, focusing on the NCAA semi upset of Michigan and N/C game loss to North Dakota.

A great trip down memory lane. I still think this is my most disappointing NC that wasn't.

They killed off a 5-minute major down 1-0 in the second and didn't give up a goal and won the game.

They hit 3 posts!!!

Tough Year for Boston University

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

That was a loaded team BU knocked off with future NHLers Turco, Morrison, and Madden (perhaps others as well). Of course, many BU fans will remember Morrison's post-game comment that "the best team doesn't always win". Then when Morrison beat out Drury for the Hobey the next day, we were thinking "the best player doesn't always win".:D

Logged in for the first time in a while and was surprised things are so calm after the thunderbolts that came through starting in December.

Does anyone have any insight or info on the status of the investigation into the program?
I know it is early days but do we have a rough timeline of when to expect any findings?
Would not surprise me if major changes were instituted, including reducing number of scholarships for ice hockey and serious personnel changes on the coaching staff.

Time line will likely be mid summer.
Would be very surprised if any MAJOR changes occurred.
Reducing scholarships? Never in a million years, not on this planet.
Won't be any personnel changes (although some admin procedures may be instituted)

Have you ever heard of any collegiate athletic program taking scholarships away from itself? Have you taken leave of your senses?

Only if there are major NCAA rule violations will this happen, and I seriously doubt there will be. Schools frequently do self-impose penalties in those situations as a way to show the NCAA they're fixing the problem and avoid harsher penalties. Will not happen in this case, also seriously doubt there will be any personnel change at a high level. Probably more oversight, new rules, other stuff to placate angry people, etc.

better include serious personnel changes in school mgmt/oversight then too. and if they reduce anything, it better also include the blocks of tickets the presidents office skims when BU gets to another final four (suppressed laughter..). as i said at the beginning, brownie and jackpa better have had a talk after the first idiot player event and if brownie did nothing more than ask how many tickets he was gonna get for tampa to distribute to the board this time that's the biggest problem. harry truman put it best.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

For those of us old folk that don't have a Facebook account, care to provide more info?

We’ve been telling you all year how incredible the support you all showed to the Men’s Hockey team was, but now we wanted to show you that the players share this sentiment as well. For the past couple weeks, we have been having conversations with the players, and have combined the highlights from them with quotes made to the FreeP, as well as press releases. Thanks again for an outstanding year, and thanks in advance for building off of this year to make next year even better. #ProudToBU

Wade Megan: The BU fan support this year was excellent. I was blown away by the number of people we had at the away games throughout the year; it was amazing. One game that stood out in my mind this year was the game at NU at the end of the year. It was obvious that you guys were in our corner all year long, and that was a good feeling. Fans can absolutely impact how we play, and we fed off the energy that you guys brought to buildings on multiple occasions. This year’s fan support was definitely the most consistent that I have seen since I have been here. Know that we appreciate all of the support that you guys have shown us; we have a big year ahead of us and the expectations of The Dog Pound are high because of the bar that you guys set this year! Thanks again.

Garrett Noonan: The fan support this year has been unbelievable. I know we feed off the crowd and when they are there, we want to win for them. It’s even crazier when we go on the road and there’s our fan section, but there’s no fan section for the other team. It’s been pretty cool to see that. It just shows how our fans travel so well and how loyal they are to us. We’ve gone to a few places where it feels like a home game, especially the game at Providence . It’s kind of cool when that happens. Thanks for all the support; you make our jobs a lot easier at home and away games when you all come. It’s awesome to see. Know how much we really do respect you, and how big of a part of the game you are for us.

Sahir Gill: This year’s fan support was great; through thick and thin we had great support and it was really nice to see. The crowds on the road were unreal, namely at Harvard, Vermont, BC, and Northeastern. It's always nice to have fans cheering. I think that combined with the excitement of the game and the fans, you get more into a game, and personally I think I play better. Thanks a lot for the support this year. It was a unique year for BU Hockey but you guys stayed behind us the whole way through and it was greatly appreciated.

Another Player: The support this year was great, and was particularly awesome at the beginning of the year. Also, the support for all of our road games was incredible; it really made a big difference. There were two games that were memorable for me personally. The first one was up at Vermont; after all the stuff that had gone on this year, to see that the fans cared about us and made the trip meant a lot to all of us. And then to get the 4 points up there, you guys really were the difference makers. The second was at Northeastern. I couldn't believe that we could actually be louder than their fans; it was like a home game for us.

Sean Escobedo: For you to come out and support us on the road like that is awesome. Can’t speak enough about that. We have the greatest fans and we were lucky enough to have that. As a player, the fans on the road are the best. Don’t stop doing that.

Matt Ronan: I thought the fans were incredible this year. They stuck with us through the good and the bad; our student sections seemed more enthusiastic than anyone else’s. We really do love all the support we get from our fans. It's unreal to see them on the road, even up at UNH and Maine. We appreciate the sacrifices you guys make to support us in each game.

Ross Gaudet: The Dog Pound did a great job of not only showing up to the home games but also to the away ones. In both away games at BC, I think our student support outnumbered theirs. I would just like to thank The Dog Pound for making my four years at BU memorable. We have the best fans in college hockey and it was an honor to play in front of such great fans.

Justin Courtnall: I thought the BU fan support was unbelievable this year. You guys were really dedicated and supportive to us the whole year. I think when we play well during games and hear the fans cheering and know that you guys are noticing the good things going on, it helps keep us playing at that level. It is great to have that feeling. When we might be down and not playing to our abilities, having the fans help us get going is definitely a plus. I just really want to thank the fans for all of their support, and want them to know that we really appreciate them supporting us. Without you guys in the stands, it wouldn't be nearly as fun and memorable for us to play at BU.

Jack Parker: I don’t know if the fans know how important they are to the team; to hear someone cheer for them, to see the Scarlet and White in the stands, to know that you’re not here us against the world. I think it’s a tribute to the loyalty and enthusiasm and attitude of our fans. I just wanted to thank you and let you know how much our team appreciated your support at our games. I heard several of our players talk about how great the fan support was and how it helped us pick up key wins. Your support throughout the year at rinks everywhere was absolutely incredible.

Another Player: The fans always impact our play. I think obviously the louder the better, but also just staying positive and sticking by us, which you guys did so well this year, makes a great difference. I have been going to BU games for years before being a part of the team. I thought this year felt how Walter Brown Arena used to feel. I just want to tell the fans thank you for all of your support. We play because we love the game, but also because we want to give back to the fans, and you guys have been awesome. We want to have a winning community, and we thank you for coming along even when things don't go well. We owe our program to the fans, you keep us up and running. So thank you again!

Kieran Millan: Obviously we had some setbacks this year, but your undying support got us through it.

Chris Connolly: The fan support here is unique and unmatched throughout the country. In my four years the student section is always huge and super supportive. I like to see that our student section is up in that corner and we still have a huge crowd even when we’re at Conte, and I didn’t see that with the BC fans. It’s a testament to the following we have here. It’s the reason I think we had so much energy. That’s what keeps us running and alive with a lot of energy when the students are going real loud. Hats off to you for all the support. We thank you for everything you’ve done this year for us. It means a lot to the players and it’s absolutely tougher to lose in front of you.

Kevin Gilroy: One of the main reasons for the team’s ability to overcome a lot of the off ice issues and turn them into positives on the ice was due to the support we had throughout the season. My most memorable moment with the fans I have to say was senior night. I was an in and out type guy who occasionally got a goal, but when I was announced to bring my parents to center ice and the students were all standing chanting my name, it was something special. It shows that no matter what type of player you are for the team, they respect the work I put in, and in turn I respect everything you guys do whether getting the crowd going, or going as a group to away games. But the moment at center ice when I waved to the crowd and everyone cheered loudly, I had that one last moment with college’s best fans. During games fans can change momentum just as much as a big hit or goal. If the crowd is going, it gives you an extra burst that you wouldn’t have if they weren’t behind you. They have helped us through some tough games this year, and what I would like to say to the fans is just thanks for making my experience here at BU something I will never forget. I was able to live out a dream of mine to play college hockey, and the support, dedication, and pride the fans have shown game in and game out really made my time here at BU memorable. Even for a 4th line guy, you guys get behind whoever is in Scarlet and White. Thanks for the memories, and hopefully these guys can bring that trophy back down Comm. Ave, where it belongs.

That was nice to read. As I tweeted back, I wanted to add my thanks as well. I travel to almost every game and thought the Dog Pound's support this year was more noticeable than in previous seasons. It, uh, got a little dusty in here reading Kevin Gilroy's comments.

Now imagine what a great experience it would be if the ticket holders on the side stood and chanted his name as well, oh wait first we'd have to get more than 5% of them to stay for the ceremony. (Not a shot at you Scarlet, more the people who don't read this board)

Proud member of that 1%

Totally agree with you. I dislike that they do it after the game but if they're going to do it after the game they need to do a better job of announcing it and getting people to stay. I thought they did a better job of that up in Vermont, though the student section vanished as soon as BU won it in OT. I heard several annoucements about the post game ceremony there and did not hear nearly as many at Agganis.
