Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

this will be brady v papi or bellicheat.

different times.

those seven are immortal icons.. who nobody under 25 knows about. bird is the youngest and last played 18 years ago.

I think/hope you're wrong. I'm 21 and it took me until the age of 13 to realize that Orr, Williams, Yaz, Russell and Bird were actually real people and not in fact Gods.

I'm going to have to agree with Mookie here. I never heard of Russell or Orr before I moved to Boston. I only knew Yaz in passing (knew he played baseball). (I did know who Bird and Williams are because I was actually watching basketball when Bird played - around when I stopped. And Ted Williams' head was a big deal when I was little.)

Edit - Of course, I had never even seen any sort of hockey game until I saw my first game at WBA - 11/16/2002 Maine and BU (BU got trounced, but I was hooked).

yeah, i guess you have a point........ not that it makes whatever the result is "accurate" ;) if it is an under 25 thing, then its a no brainer..........Tom Terrific, and he is most deserving

Yup, I remember that night. Big thunderstorm later that night and a certain someone "didn't feel the need to go to T's Pub...." Right Dave??

In terms of the general public, yes, I'm an outlier. But keep in mind that this contest is on NESN and NESN.com. That means the only people participating in it are people who watch NESN and/or visit NESN.com. Sure, there will be some pink hats who think everything that happened before 2001 is insignificant, but I think the majority of NESN's viewership and readership are die-hard, knowledgeable fans from the area. I think your worries would be more pertinent if this was on, say, Boston.com.

maybe.... though i have an older golf buddy who is DIE HARD red sox and has nesn glued to the dial. can't operate a computer to save his life! i have to help him through email. (and no, this isn't profromdover :p )

once the young'uns hear about this, they will crash the website to vote for tom and varitek ("HE IS SO HOT!!!").

i just had fun voting for tiant, walter brown, and bobby doerr!! ;) and "DON'T TRADE WADE, FOR GETTING LAID!!!" -back when sox games were fun and easy to get into:(

I agree with this, however depends how much they advertise this during Bruins and Red Sox games, that could bring in a score of new-to-the-scene fans with just a quick mention on TV that casual fans would be watching.

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

The word "experienced" was used instead of "quiet, complacent and laid back". Speaking to several of the players, who will remain unnamed for obvious reasons, they said Buddy is a nice guy but does nothing to point out errors and come up with solutions. Quinn, on the other hand, pushed the guys and was extremely helpful in developing individual skills. That is what I meant by experienced coach. They told me they really didn't learn anything new this year. Of course they are not going to say anything in public. You just need to look at some of the players growth in development over the past few years. Which of the d-mens game improved this year, significantly over last year. I say Warsofsky, simply because of ice time and a year of maturity. I just think that young blood is needed to get this team going.

There's been a lot of Buddy bashing on these boards, but this is the first one that I think has anything substantial. Assuming you did really talk to the players (I have no reason to not believe you), this is a pretty revealing post.

While I also have no reason not to believe stripes talked to players, I will remain respectfully skeptical of his credibility. Because I don't know who stripes is in real life, I don't know how close he actually is to the team. There have certainly been posters in the past that have made stuff up.

As for the post itself, I personally saw Powers working with players 1-on-1 in practice numerous times. I'll assume he was actually doing some teaching/correcting and not just shooting the breeze. Whether or not he was effective and whether or not he could connect with players, I have no idea -- no one's gonna talk about that kind of stuff with a reporter. But from what I personally saw, he certainly wasn't just Easy-Come-Easy-Go-Mr.-Nice-Guy all year.

I'm not sure how much is pure "Buddy bashing" as much as he simply doesn't appear to be as good as Quinn, which based on my opinions of him there is plenty of room to be worse than Quinn while still being a good coach. As with most coaches, I'd expect him to be more comfortable with the team, system, and environment in his second year.

As for not believing people I'm closer to FL's opinion than yours, no offense stripes, but it's just too easy to make things up and put them on the internet under a faceless moniker. If someone has some good contacts they will get a couple things right and then I'll start to believe them. Remember 3hock was mocked when he first told us Gilroy was coming back.

FWIW, Eric Gryba was awarded last night at the Student-Athlete Awards Reception for his GPA. Gryba smart?

I was wondering about this. Ruikka had a 3.89. Was Gryba's higher? That would be pretty darn (I always forget USCHO doesn't let you say da-mn) impressive.

I don't exactly know how it works, but softball star April Setterlund was the only non-senior to earn an award (top female athlete, tough to argue). I think Gryba most likely had the highest GPA of all the seniors on the team, though it does seem strange to me that he would beat out Zach Cohen.

That would be impressive, depending on what he was taking, of course. BU offers a few classes even a monkey could ace. A 4.0 in a semester full of those is not all that impressive.

Stripes99 is Eric Gryba, or a relative of him. Almost every post has something to do with him. :p

Even if that assumption/joke isn't accurate, he/she has posted enough that I'll believe them.

The assistant coaching situation could have played out differently last off-season. Keep in mind that Buddy was not the top choice to back fill the vacancy when Quinn left...

From the 7/2/2009 entry in the July 2009 edition of the US Hockey Report: http://ushr.com/news/20090701

Hynes Staying Put
The search to fill the vacancy created on the Boston University staff by David Quinn’s departure for the AHL has been a quiet one.

Much of the speculation at the Select 16 Festival revolved around whether former BU winger John Hynes would accept his alma mater’s offer to return. Informed sources, however, today reported that Hynes, after talking with Jack Parker and Mike Bavis -- and mulling things over for a while -- has decided to stay with the National Team Development Program.

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

Parker, for as much as he is respected, does not motivate like Jerry. Jerry can get the most out of just about every team he coaches.

Can I see a show of hands of anyone that DOESN'T have a problem with this statement?

BU Hockey: Motivate Me
