Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

FL - any talk about the game for Wednesday and the impending storm, like maybe trying to re-schedule? Sadly Merrimack is traveling this weekend or they could have potentially moved it to Friday. Thankfully it's not a long drive, but the team may have to leave at noon in order to make it up there in time.

This would be fantastic if they'd move it, but looking at Mack's schedule, they're going to Alabama, so they can't play Thursday even. Sucks, I really would like to see this game, but am a little wary of going in rush hour with a foot + of snow on the ground.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

I recall the 1st period. AC had it between the circles off a feed and norwood'd it. Someone dug it ou of the corner and it worked back to Noonan, who was also alone and at most three feet behind where clenending shot. Same result... Within 12 seconds.

Both of those setups were from Connolly. And then he had two more nice setups later in the period- one was a whiff and one hit the goalie in the bread basket. I can just imagine what was going through his head. Four chances for assists, and only one results in a shot on net. All in all, though, I don't think there were significantly more shots wide than usual; they were just more noticeable.

Sounds like they're gonna do everything in their power to get it in. Sucks. I don't know if we're gonna be able to make it up to cover it.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

We didn't get final stat packs for some reason. Probably because everything about the state of Vermont sucks.

LOOKING BACK TO LAST NIGHT

1. Gotta disagree about the Green Mountain state. We had a nice early dinner down on Church Street and I love the Gutt. The only thing I hate about Vermont is the TRAP. Maybe BU's breakout was better, but especially in the first period, they couldn't get through the neutral zone.

2. Noonan shouldn't be blamed for "VT's" first goal, though it meant that the Terriers scored the first three of the evening.

3. Number 9's parents enjoyed the game.

4. The drive back down 89 in the snow was tiresome.

5. However you cut it, BU is 7-3-4 in HE with the third best winning percentage.

LOOKING AHEAD

1. I went to North Andover on Saturday and saw that they've finished the remodeling. The old bleachers on the right-hand side are replaced by the same kinds of seats that were on the home team side earlier this year. Visiting teams now exit under the stands. You still can stand behind the glass near the goaltender, but no longer at the corner.

2. Oh yeah, I also saw Merrimack humiliate the Black Bears. A guy next to me said, "Well, I guess this shows that BC and UNH are the class of HE." I told him he was forgetting one other team, and he actually drew a blank. "You're looking at it," I said. Merrimack has goaltending a couple of impact players, but what impresses me is that the whole team plays smart hockey with more intensity than anybody else.

3. I just checked the rankings. Merrimack has edged up from 17 to 15 -- but are still behind Maine! They're a top 10 team in my eyes, but they probably get a lot of mileage out of the Rodney Dangerfield thing.

4. Lots more hockey to be played, but Wednesday's game could be big in the final standings, in terms of points obviously, but also in regard to tiebreakers.

5. Who would have ever thought that the Terriers would be an underdog against the Warriors, but given the latter's record in their own building, how can it be otherwise?

I was joking about Vermont sucking- I actually really like the state. It's very scenic and the snowboarding's great. I also really like the Gutt, except for the fact that it's freezing and the concessions don't take cards (honestly, what century is it?). #4 on your list is why last night sucked. I spun out and had to spend the night in a hotel. Had I known it was gonna be blizzarding up there ("chance of light snow" my ***), I wouldn't have gone.

I also went Saturday, and I agree with all of this. I still don't think Merrimack is quite on the level of BC and UNH, but they're definitely better than Maine and BU right now. The fact that they're still behind Maine is a joke. Maine wouldn't be in the NCAAs if the season ended today. Merrimack would be a 3 seed and BU would be the last team in.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

CSS Midterm Rankings are out:

Oleksiak first HE player at #27 North American Skater

Nieto #55
Clendening #61
Destry Straight (BC Recruit) #82
Mike Pereira #135
Sahir Gill #139
Cason Hohmann #172
Alexx Privitera #193

I probably missed a few, but at any rate, always good to see your guys on the list. Specifically for Nieto and Clendening, it certainly appears their "pro" stock dropped from what it first was, but there's obviously a lot of time for that to change back in the other direction.

Makes sense, Clendening has had a very underwhelming season thus far, Nieto's had flashes of talent but has been inconsistent.

Nieto and Clendening have gone in opposite directions.

Nieto started slowly and I was surprised by talk of him being a first or second-rounder, given the fact that he doesn't have great size. He had opportunities (that breakaway in the waning seconds of OT against, who was it, Maine?). But he has started to cash in more, and I think he will improve consistently throughout his BU career.

I was very impressed with Clendening in the first few games. When the team started slipping he did too (cause? effect? tough to tell). I thought he looked pretty good against Vermont. I think he will blossom. Don't forget that Shattenkirk had a pretty up and down freshman season, also missing out on the WJCs.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Just got this email from the BU ticket office:

Our records indicate that you purchased tickets for the Away Hockey Game at Merrimack on this Wednesday, January 12th. With inclement weather predicted, we suggest you contact Merrimack College before you head for the game, to ensure that the game is taking place. Their website is MerrimackAthletics.com or you can call their box office (978-837-5324) for cancellation information.

It made me laugh. I don't know why.

Nice of them to do that. Glad I didn't pre-purchase tickets for this one. Really hope it gets postponed.

It's funny because it implies that BU has no control/no idea if the game will be played. Does this mean Jack will be calling the Merrimack College ticket office before boarding the bus?

Doesn't the league office usually have jurisdiction over this sort of thing?

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

FL will have a full preview later tonight on the Merrimack game, but we can report that Max Nicastro has been handed a one-game suspension for his actions in Sunday's game against Vermont. As always, you can check the link in my signature for details.

Also, regarding the weather, there are a handful of factors involved in deciding whether the game will or won't be played, but it sounds to me like the biggest one will be BU's ability to get out of the city and to Merrimack. The team is planning on leaving almost 2 hours earlier than normal, and an official decision could come as late as tomorrow afternoon. If any news comes tonight, it'll be that the game is cancelled, otherwise, that call will be saved for tomorrow.

No decision has been made as to what happens if the game is cancelled, but if the snow is bad enough, it's possible Merrimack won't be able to get to Nashville this weekend, and then the teams may try to play Friday, but that's essentially just speculation at this point.

I wonder if they could have tried to play it tonight.

I wonder if they could have tried to play it tonight.

I was thinking about that too, but in order for teams to have proper prep time, they would've had to have made that change by yesterday morning at the absolute latest. Much easier to push a game forward than move it back.

Team or league suspension?

The weird thing about that was you couldn't even see the ref in the picture until he already flung the net off. Going off of that, I'd say he had no intention of hitting the ref, but that's what happens I guess.

I hope he had no intention of hitting the ref.

I hope he had no intention of hitting the ref.

I'm pretty sure the ref knew right away Nicastro didn't intend to batter him with the net since he only gave him a misconduct rather than sending him to the locker room.

Team. Parker's call.

Edit: Actually, after just listening to our interview again, Parker didn't say. He just said, "Nicastro got suspended." I thought it was Parker's call because after that, he said he thought Nicastro should've gotten more than a misconduct. But he didn't actually say if it was his call or not.

Edit 2: Just confirmed- it was from Parker, not the league. Sorry for any confusion this messy post caused.
