Re: Boston University: 2010-11 part I - "so...you're saying i get a calendar??"

Nice night for former Terriers:

- VDG had an assist for Colorado, and his line had 6 points
- Colby Cohen made his debut, and he and Shattenkirk helped shut out the opponent
- Yip scored
- McCarthy scored his second goal for San Jose

I believe there are now 7 guys from the title team that have played in the NHL: Yip, McCarthy, Bonino, Wilson, Shattenkirk, COhen, Gilroy

Nice piece in The Denver Post about longtime buddies Cohen and Shattenkirk making their pro debuts this week.

Most exciting game I've seen in awhile.

Both teams showed talent and pluck. Maine fans in my section were very friendly and talkative about hockey.

Crowd was big and loud. Students seemed to largely leave the "You're white trash" chant at home, a very good thing.

Fun time all around.

- Coyle was a monster out there.

Is there anyone who thinks Coyle will still be at BU after his soph season, at the latest?

Anyone know anything about the paintings on the Boston University West T stop signs? Assuming they are reproductions of original BU football programs since the Pru is in the background on one. If you have not seen them, take a look. Very cool. One each vs. Harvard, BC, and NU.

Two seasons would be a gift at this point. Hopefully his desire to keep getting stronger with Boyle will help tilt any tough decisions after this year. Also in our favor: his uncle palyed two years and went on to flourish in the NHL, and 2) next years team shoud be a true title contender (not saying we can't win it this year, but you know what I mean).

I've now been to two games in person and they are the two semi-"blemishes" on our schedule....Scarlet let me know I'm okay as long as we don't have a loss...

- Bomber - I agree about the shooting thing, especially Connolly in OT. What was that all about? That plaay went from an odd man rush to basically giving them the puck on purpose...
- Coyle was a monster out there.
- Maine is a very good team as expected.
- We had 5 shots in the first 30 minute, 25 shots in the second 30 minutes
- Escobedo had a tough night. First that terrible behind the back pass on the four on two that went right to a thankful black bear player, and he had a couple other tough shifts.
- When do we start asking questions about Megan as we do about Trivino? He hasn't shown me anything. Perhaps he is playing well defensively.
- Overall a much better feeling tie than the first one I caused. :-)

Your note about Escobedo reminded me that Nicastro's play warrants a note. I thought he had a very good game. He played with a lot of confidence and seemed to demand the puck at the point in the 3rd period.

I thought Gil started out strong, but then when he was moved to the third line played like he was sulking a bit. It will be interesting to see what Jack does with the lines moving forward.

Anyone else get nervous when the 4th line was out there in the 3rd? This is the first time I've had this feeling. Defensively, they seemed over-matched.

Yes, which was validated when they were on the ice for the second goal.

So one game into the "eight game set", we are sitting at .500, just like we hoped ;-)

Nope. HAA was crawling with scouts last night...plenty to see, I imagine.

Probably has to do with them scouting Clendening and Nieto since both are potential 1st rounders next year.

INCH made us #1 in their power rankings today.

I was sitting with one from the Stars looking at Clendenning (he did scribble down a note about Gill).

I love this team. They compete, they have skill, they block shots, they take the body, they work well with each other. Yeah, they need to shoot more. (I'm pretty sure Jack took that timeout in the 2nd period simply to say to them SHOOT THE PUCK!)

Fun game. Ya also gotta love the way they keep coming back late to win or tie games. A good sign.

BU Hockey: Terrier Pride

PS: Maine's good. It looks like a Big Four year.

As someone who's been known to bristle at the people who are always yelling "Shoooot!" anytime a player has the puck in the offensive zone, I can't agree with you more here. So many times a Terrier had the puck in a prime scoring area and decided to try a low-percentage pass to a trailing teammate. You know, those teammates can score on rebounds, too, they don't always need a pretty one-timer on the rush.

Yeah, one thing that has really irked me a few times is they'll get the puck into a high-percentage shooting area with a good shooting lane, but they'll instead choose to pass it off for a one-timer from a bad angle along the boards. These kids have a lot of talent but they're still rough around the edges in some spots. I'm glad to see them always looking to play together and help the other guy out. But if you've got the puck at the top of the slot and there's only one guy between you and the goalie, SHOOT THE PUCK!

Agreed. And conversely, there have been too many times when the guys on the points shoot with a defender nearly on top of them, often leading to a breakaway or odd-man rush. Warsofsky, who should know better, has been guilty of that several times.

The faceoff success of earlier in the year is going south. I for one would like to see more o-zone faceoff wins that lead to a quick shot like the one that led to Wilson's game-winner vs. Vermon in DC. Going a bit further back, Brian Collins was particularly good at putting a draw on Freddy's stick; then Meyer would move in or to the right and fire.

I think I was halfway through screaming the phrase when Connolly buried the pass from Chiasson on the first goal. It does work on occassion, but not enough to justify doing it as often as they do.

They used to run this to Yip a lot a couple of years ago, lining him up in the slot to the side of the guy taking the faceoff who would try and direct it right to him and get off a quick one-timer. I remember two times that it worked perfectly, once against DU and once against (RPI?) and both resulted in goals.

Yeah, this is an exception, but at least in that scenario, Connolly was lower and closer to the net than some of the other instances I remember where they passed it to a guy who was maybe a foot or two off the boards, and six feet or so above the faceoff dot. It'd be like a basketball player passing up an open jumper from the free throw line and passing it to a guy along the baseline, with both of his feet on the three point line just for good measure. The instincts and the thought are good, and it's great to see the guys not playing me hockey but we hockey, but you've also got to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves to you.

EDIT: THE POLES DON'T MATTER still pretty cool. THE POLES DON'T MATTER

Meagan had a nice rush right into the slot in the 1st period. Nothing but goalie and net in front of him and he dished the puck to a winger on the far dot. Brutal.

And yes, the yahoos that constantly yell "shoot!" are annoying, but with this team, they're kind of right.
