BU #1 in the country in the latest USCHO poll. Congrats guys.

I think it's safe to pencil in a loss Friday night against the Mack. If I was in Vegas, I'd bet the house on it.

Hmm, trying to do a bit of history sleuthing and hitting a wall.

This listing: http://server2.maxanet.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?oberman2/39/showall

Can it be an actual game-worn? Did Kielt ever wear #2? I'm seeing #15 his freshman year and of course #5 from that point on (when Gryba became #2). Also, was RBK ever the supplier when Kielt played? Is this just a terrible replica made up by the athletic dept?

RBK was the supplier up through 04-05 I believe, might have been 05-06. That said, I was discussing this with a friend recently, and neither of us could think of a time when Kielt wore #2. Perhaps this jersey was made by mistake or something and has just been sitting around in an athletic department storage room for a long time?

Re: Boston University: 2010-11 part I - "so...you're saying i get a calendar??"

Slightly more seriously, I wonder how hard it was to follow college hockey back in the '70s or even earlier. Based on the coverage WCHA schools like Minnesota or Wisconsin currently get in Boston-area newspapers and on current television stations that were around forty years ago (ABC, CBS and NBC?), I gotta think a lot of times fans showed up to games knowing next to nothing about the opposing team and how their season has been going, especially when it came to the not-yet-frozen Four. I know news in general was covered much more in depth in newspapers back then than it is now, but how much was devoted to college hockey? When did national media coverage expand enough to make polls possible?

It was difficult. Western teams were just a rumor. Unless you drew a paycheck from college hockey, or knew someone who lived in a WCHA city, you were at a loss. The Hockey News devoted a page or two to college hockey, but the coverage was superficial and dated. And, it wasn't just western teams. Recruiting was lost in the fog, also. Again, unless you knew someone who knew someone, you didn't really know who the freshman would be until the season started. I missed the first BU game of the 1973-4 season, but my brother went. When he came home, he said, "There's another Meagher". This would've been Rick, who went on to be a 3 time All-American.

Boston University: #1 by default...hey, we'll take it!

It seems like a cycle this year: the new #1 always seems to lose. Eek!

Thanks, I swore I remembered him being #2 that year, but BU's archives had an error. He was #15 in 04-05, but #2 in 05-06. However, BU's link to the 05-06 roster leads to 06-07 right now.

very cool vignette..............my father was somewhat close with snooks kelly and i remember him always telling me that "BU is gonna have a wagon AGAIN this year" or "wait until you see this kid Sheehy next year" .........so i guess i was lucky to have inside info that BU was going to kick our butts again that year:(;)

There is a ridiculously BC-esque long line of students outside Agganis right now to pick up tickets for the Mack and UNH games. It's almost around behind Fitrec. I'm assuming they're not all there to pick up tickets for the free basketball scrimmage tonight.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here but, as much as I enjoy this team, and appreciate the way they have played up to this point, are they really the best team in the COUNTRY?....in the EAST?.....in HOCKEY EAST?
Am I the only one who thought that both Maine goals the other night were on the officials? (horrible call/dive by Maine d-man on Coyle led to PPG and a badly missed offsides call led to the 2d goal seconds later).
Great atmosphere at Agganis the other night. That's a very good Maine team! Lot to be excited about!

 Missed offsides call? The puck didn't come close to crossing the line.

How does BU give out their student tix? I'm curious as to why UNH tix are available the week before that series.

When Maine entered the zone they were offside. The puck after that never left the zone and was in the back of the net ten seconds later. If the call is made, maybe a different result. That's all I'm saying.

I thought you were talking about when it squirted out to Dimmen. I don't recall when they entered the zone.

In the 70s, the NCAA would publish an annual guide to D1 teams (perhaps D2 and D3, too), covering the previous season's results and brief previews of each team for the coming season, including the names of top newcomers. The guides were Readers-Digest sized and I believe cdral has a collection of them.

However, the bible for college hockey fans for about forty years beginning in 1953 was Don Birkemeyer's Intercollegiate Hockey Newsletter, better known as The Green Sheet. In the 70s and 80s it was produced on a mimeograph machine. The UNH library site has a good article about this bi-weekly publication. I subscribed for about a dozen years.

The idea for the newsletter arose from the frustration of [then RPI coach] Ned Harkness, Birkmayer and others in the RPI hockey community over the slowness in obtaining scores for other hockey games across the country. This was particularly an issue in the 1952-1953 season when RPI were in the running for one of the NCAA tournament berths (which they eventually obtained).

Don Birkmayer was a graduate of RPI and became an off-ice official and, for over 30 years, the public address announcer for all RPI games. His final announcing assignment was the memorable four-overtime game between Boston University and St. Lawrence in the NCAA Regional at Albany’s Pepsi Arena.

I'd imagine Ralph Baer has add'l information about the newsletter and Birkemeyer.

Season over. We are the champions. :p

Aren't there some schools in Hockey East that would have a banner raising this weekend "Number 1 in country, November 2010"? Not mentioning any names.

Yeah, I saw that too. You're right that it might have been a different result, but the goal was not really scored as a direct result of the missed call. They also called one off sides that wasn't. But 95% of the time, they get those calls right.

No, no, and no. But at this point the records have to start counting. Here's my theory. If these poles DID count, you would see different results. Voters would spend a lot of time looking at who a team beat, home or road, any key injuries, did they outshoot the team but run into a hot goalie, etc. But since everyone knows that the poles have no impact whatsoever on postseason play, they don't put nearly that much thought into it.

I am more pleased by how we hung with Maine (despite some periods of poor play), how well our penalty killing is executing, and how well the goalies are playing than I am about the ranking. The first three items actually have a bearing on how far this team will ultimately go.

I mean correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't know exactly who votes in the USCHO poll... but I'm guessing most of the people that vote haven't even seen most of the teams in the poll play a game...??
