Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Off topic here, but I'll ask anyway. Does anyone think USA's victory over Canada was the massive upset the NCB announcers declared it to be? One of them stated it was the biggest Olympic upset since the 1980 victory over the USSR. A surprise maybe, but at this point US teams are talented enough to beat anyone without the outcome being a dramatic upset. Yes/no?

I think it was a pretty big upset, but I'm beginning to think that this team might have an inkling of the Miracle team (though obviously any comparison would be a gross exaggeration since these are all NHL players and it can't really be considered a "miracle" when they are all making millions to play hockey) because (as the line goes) "I'm not looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right ones."

Canada appears to have created a "dream team" of superstars, but they really aren't gelling as a team. The US, on the other hand, doesn't have that many superstars, but chose a lot of role-type players that are getting the job done. I think Brian Burke (et al.) did a pretty fantastic job in the regard.

Absolutely. The media in general is really overdoing this. Considering how scintillating of a game it was, I'm not surprised. And really, I think it helps the sport of hockey in the US that the media is overdoing it (the average schmuck really doesn't know how big of a deal it is or not and relies on the media).

It's the first time in 50 years the USA team has beaten the Canadian team. It's a pretty darn big upset. Of course, I'm going to stop short of saying it's bigger than 1980...

The US beat Canada in the 1996 World Cup. They've won the WJC's twice since 2004.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

The "team" concept is the same is the world cup back inthe mid 90's that was referenced. Best NHL players available from each country. CA didn't send a team in 80 because they were protesting their mj'ers being called professionals and not allowed to compete.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

It's an upset, but not a huge one. To even compare it to 1980 is absurd. A team of 23 very good NHL players beating a team of 23 All-Star NHL players is not in the same stratosphere as a team of 20 college kids beating a team of 20 superstars that had won 4 straight golds and had been playing together for a decade-plus. It's not the biggest Olympic hockey upset since then, either. Switzerland beating Canada in 2006 was bigger. Belarus beating Sweden in 2002 was bigger. Kazakhstan beating Slovakia in 1998 was bigger. And that's just in Olympics I can recall. You could argue it wasn't even the biggest upset of these Games (Slovakia over Russia is right there with it). All that said, it was obviously a great win. Just not as big of an upset as the media's making it out to be.

Please go away. And tell your friend Alex to respond to my message if he wants to tell his story to a real reporter.

Junior League your only *****ing because you hate when someone else has the facts. You think you are the insider. Just take the information with a bit of dignity

Hey, I was reading an article on nhl.com. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=518473. It was talking about a former figure skater who was at the games and mentioned her nephew committed to BU.

This is from the article: "Another legendary multiple gold-medal winner, speed skater Bonnie Blair, is happily here in Vancouver watching hockey and, of course, both long- and short-track speed skating."

"She also has a nephew who played for Colorado College during a NCAA Frozen Four tournament and another who just signed on to play for Boston University."

I was wondering if anybody knew who he is?

I'm still laughing at the idea of Bonnie Blair as a figure skater!

Lulz!

She was a speed skater and the idea of her body type out there doing triple lutzes in sequins is just too much.

If that's what you wanna think, alrighty then. But let's just recap:
-A "reporter" that no one's ever heard of posts a poorly written, poorly reported story on Bleacher Report, an incredible source to begin with.
-The story is about a player BU either had recruited or is actively recruiting (I don't think that was even made clear in the story), yet no one on here has ever heard of him despite the fact that there are a number of people on here who track BU recruiting religiously. Not to mention he never appeared on college hockey recruiting guru Chris Heisenberg's site either.
-A reporter from a much more credible outlet than Bleacher Report tries getting in touch with this Alex Greer, but he doesn't respond in what is now nearly two weeks.

Maybe this kid does exist. Maybe he'll finally get back to me. Maybe I'll find someone other than you who has actually heard of him. But until then, you'll have to excuse me and everyone else for being highly skeptical.

No one is reading anything you post seriously. Everyone, EVERYONE, is laughing every time you try and pass of a poorly written article or super-shady source (if you can even call that website a source - it doesn't mention hockey once). If you are really interested in BU hockey and are not just trying to push your story, then how about commenting on the actual team with a greater frequency than every other post?

I don't know Federal League personally, but from reading his articles and his insight on hockey, I know that he takes his job as a journalist seriously. Accusing him of being jealous that you "scooped" him is incredibly immature.

And I guess you've successfully trolled me since I've wasted time responding to one of your posts.

Junior league i find you so funny. I was originally taking about when corey broke his ankle. You were pretty hurt that you werent the one to find out first. And i only am passing on what i found because i thought it was interesting because we were discussing him earlier. And what would be this more credible source that you are a reporter for?

When was the last time i posted an article on here? O that is right never
And i never said that the website had anything to do with hockey. We had been talking about the kid earlier and i thought it was interesting so i passed it on

But that's the thing. No one is discussing him but you. The only time we discuss this kid is to point out to you how stupid and inane your "news" about him is. Honestly, most of us don't care at all whether or not this kid is real, we are here to talk about the team, how they are playing, and yes, occasionally alumni and/or legitimate recruits. But there is a separate thread for that, too, so anyone not interested doesn't have to read it.
