Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Why would that be a good reason.?. Would you not want to be part of a strong team that has a chance to go deep ?
Probably depends on how much one likes handling door duty on the bench. Although it looks like BC scheduled games for 4 Nations, so I guess they need another goalie. Or is it like football, where a player can dress for games and still redshirt as long as they never step on the field? In that case, win/win -- be on the roster, handle the door, save a year of eligibility.

IMHO the only good reasons redshirt a year is either cause you are hurt, or cause academics require it (either grades/conflicts or sometimes being a semester away from school like an exchange abroad).

Its called playing time. Why sit and watch, and lose a year of eligibility, when you can sit and watch and NOT lose a year of eligibility? Plus the kid is an academic freak. Takes all sorts of courses and credits. Probably can stock pile enough this year to cruise through her upper class years. ;)

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

I agree with her decision to RS. First - it's a testament to how far the Women's game has come when the talent level is such that there are more players with talent than spots available. Second - if you are the junior goalie on the squad, and are gaining a competitor at your position who is not only established with the program, but has just come back from a year at the highest level for women's hockey, why wouldn't you want to take a year to learn from the best and give it right back to your team?

Courtney Sheary redshirted after her rookie year at UNH, when there was a preponderance of soon to be graduated talent at the blueline. She is a senior in a leadership position now, and playing some incredible hockey for the Wildcats. You get 5 years to play 4, and I am very appreciative of the fact that she thought she could contribute better to the program she committed to by spending another year with us.

Now that several of you have pointed out she is a goalie, it makes more sense. Goalies are always a different kettle of fish. I can see the win-win for both the school and the player in this case.

She's behind Schaus and a pretty good junior goalie in Kingston who would be starting for many D1 teams. Only makes sense to redshirt.

I'm pretty sure the player can dress as long as they don't touch the ice and still be considered redshirted.

As an aside... Where the heck have you guys been?

I have either been in New York, or watching New York come to the Whitt. Thankfully, the Yankees have been eliminated from the schedule;)

Oh and you heard it hear first - we'll be hosting an NCAA quarterfinal come March.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Got to the game today at the beginning of the 2nd. BC controlled the play for a good amount of time in the 2nd and 3rd and were able to come back and tie it up after a 2-0 deficit in the 1st. The OT period was entirely BC except for a Yukon breakaway opportunity with seconds remaining... unfortunately BC couldn't pull out the win. Still, a point is a point.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

vell provides a good summary. bc played very tentatively in the first period and uconn took it to bc. from the drop of the puck in the second period through the end of regulation and ot, bc really dominated. i believe that bc accumulated nearly a 30- 7 shots advantage in the final two periods. unfortunately only two of these shots found the back of the net.

for today, bc needs to come out and take the play to uconn. a few quick goals could demoralize the huskies and lead to a solid bc victory. if bc allows uconn to hang in there, uconn will gain confidence and has a chance to provide an upset.

need to see bc pick things up on the power play. since the last time i mentioned this (several games ago), bc continues to struggle on the power play. this struggle is the difference between bc being 7-0 and 5-0-2 as once again, no points on the pp vs uconn or quinny.

go eagles.

AWESOME, and Wednesday @ NU I should finally be able to make it to a game.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

6-0-2 this year, including 1-0-1 against a solid UConn team.
I'll give you the 6-0-2, but UConn is 1-7-1 thus far, including getting outscored 19-1 by Syracuse and UMD over a 3 game stretch. You've done a nice job beating the teams you should beat in general, but the UConn tie is a poor result.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Accurate statement that BC has done a good job of beating teams they should and it feels sooooooooo much better than last year. Interesting comparison in preparation for tomorrow's game versus Northeastern. In the early season, both teams have played several common opponents with BC generally coming out a bit better versus Vermont, Syracuse and Quinny. Given past efforts and the team producing on all three lines, I give the slight edge to BC on this one. Should be a good contest.

Go Eagles.
