Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

i will have to agree with the loss of schaus makes a huge impact on the team play..she is like having a 6th skater on the ice when she is between the pipes...however i do not agree with mangene being that much of a difference maker..there are plenty of other defense on the team that can keep everything together (kurth burns bolden martino)

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

although we will find out more on sunday, the additions of schaus and mangene to the Eagles line up had a HUGE impact on the style of play exhibited by the Eagles today against BU. From the second the puck was dropped, BC was aggressive, forechecking and playing on their toes. The result was a well earned victory against a tough and fully loaded BU team. It did not appear that BU was ready for the speed of BC and that it took them almost two periods to get accustomed to things; of course when they did they did start to make it a more interesting game.

will look for bc to come out aggressive again on sunday. i posted earlier that the canadian olympians were on the ice virtually every other shift. i'm wondering if they will be tired tomorrow. bc fans can only hope.

go eagles, great victory!!

Didn't see the game, but the box score indicates it was more Molly than Mangene. Not saying anything against Meghan, but your "fully loaded" comments are still "completely whack".

Nonetheless, an excellent win for the Eagles.

Was at the game today and have to give credit where it's due. The Eagles played extremely well, crisp and accurate passing, battled for loose pucks and just plain old out competed BU. Although if I had to sum up the game in one word, it'd be: goaltending. Schaus made some great saves and Fromkin was pretty bad to say the least. Looking forward to tomorrow.

How exactly do you expect a D's performance to be fully shown in a box score unless all you care about is offense and not their primary defensive job? Didn't go to the game and don't want to be part of y'all's ****ing match, but I've always preferred the D and just don't understand your comment.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

I concur. The breakout out of the defensive zone was much crisper on Saturday versus last week. Whether it was solely Mangene or not, in Saturday's game she made the simple and correct pass allowing the offense to do their thing. Unfortunately the player initiatiting the play with the initial pass is not always rewarded in the boxscore. Holding the high powered BU offense to 27 shots, minimizing odd man rushes and keeping shots generally to the outside are other indications that Mangene and company (and I do include Kurth, Burns, Martino, Slozek and Bolden) performed quite admirably in the game; although they may not have huge numbers in the scoring.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

I finally got to see the team for the first time this year in person, and while I missed the first period when most of the goals happened I was still able to take away some pretty optimistic observations:

-I love the way the first line is set up. Stack obviously is Stack, Welch has the strength and the shot, and Bizzari is like a ball of energy out there, flying into the corners, making things happen. She really stood out on a number of shifts.

-Wasylk is the real deal. She skates so well - she's quick & strong, and while she didn't do too much while I was at the game yesterday you can just tell how talented she is.

-Mangene really is a fantastic, steady puck-moving D. She kind of reminded me a little of a poor (wo)man's Dennis Seidenberg on the Bruins. Quick, and always good at making that first pass out of the zone.

-Even while BU was turning it on in the 3rd period this team didn't cave and allow a ton of shots while praying for odd-man rushes the other way the way they had in the past. They made a lot of good plays defensively to break up BU opportunities and did a good job late getting the puck out of the zone and staying out of danger when it was a two goal game.

How often has BC outshot teams over the past 4 years? Especially good teams?

-Burns has molded into a great point option on the power play. I'd like to see her let one go a little more often as I recall her having a pretty good slap shot.

Super pumped that they got the win at Walter Brown which has been a house of horrors for them all the way back to when BU was just "meh" in '06-'07. I'd consider yesterday's win a mild upset. I wanted a split out of the weekend, but with the home game coming up tonight it's hard not to get excited for possibly taking 3 or even 4 points this weekend.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

I was at the game, and I think the difference maker was BC shutting down BU in the first by not giving them any time or space. Even before BU released a pass, there was an Eagle in their face, and the intended recipients were tightly guarded. They played with a tremendous amount of energy, and as some have noted, transition play, with the D moving the puck extremely well, was superb. That said, the Eagles were able to bring that pace and play for 40 minutes, but BU had some in the tank in the third (which I saw first 2 weeks ago against the 'Cats).

Wake and Poulin weren't on the same line all the time, but when they were paired together, moved the puck with some breathtaking speed, evidenced by several of the goals.

It will be interesting to see who has the most left in the tank today.

good call.....and I agree. I guess what I was trying to say is that it is my firm belief that the girls would play substandard without Schaus between the pipes even if Mangene was around.

its not a *****ing match. its a discussion about how the girls play differently with or without Molly and with or without Mehgan.
but I've always preferred the D and just don't understand your comment.
Preferred the D in general or preferred Boston College's D?

EDIT: 9,000!

D in general. Started out a Devils' fan with Daneyko as my favorite. I'm old-fashioned, I like D that actually play D.

The defense played GREAT!!!!! The breakout was excellent----- They were all over the puck in the defensive zone--- OHHH and BTW Kurth set up goal 5 or 6 with a beautiful pass and Martino set up goal 1, with shot from point! It is a much improved defense from last year with the pick up of Mangene and the transfer of Martino-

agreed -the D played well --- Kurth is solid! Bolden excellent offensive skills - Bolden and Martino look awesome on the Power play-
Martino coming off of post season surgery will only get better with time- expect to see her being used more!

See this is why no one can take you seriously. How are we supposed to take your opinion as more valid than his when he sees like 75% of the games and watched the one you are discussing?

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Also Kurth is legit. I don't think I've ever seen another d-man at BC that I've been more impressed with.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2010-2011: Schaus In Da Haus

Snoozer at Conte tonight after Saturday's high-tempo affair. BC and BU each had maybe two scoring chances and one of BU's popped in. Oh well. Before the weekend I would have been happy with a split, so I'l'l take it.

I'm not asking you to take me seriously. I'm not asking you to do anything. When you saw over 75% of the games, no one took you seriously either........not sure which is worse. :p

Moving on. Opponent wise....do you think that BC plays better against supposedly better opponents and worse against supposedly weaker opponents?

I go back and forth with favs, but I like D as well. I think the best offense starts with solid defense. My current favs are Bolden at BC and Kennedy at Yale. I also like some girls from Minn & Duluth, but I'm not sure they are "true" D's.

At D-I, most of the D are "true D". The opposing offenses are too good to have players that don't take their defensive responsibility seriously. Many of the top D in the offensive end are better offensively because they skate, handle the puck, and see the ice the better. Those skills are usually an asset playing D as well. Over the years I've seen a few good offensive D who would struggle in their own zone because they were small and didn't match up well around their own net. But there are certainly exceptions, because players like MacLeod and Larocque don't seem handicapped by a lack of height.
