Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Please?

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Ple

wwhyte: We meet again! I hope your daughter takes it a little easier on me this Friday. I've been getting picked on something fierce lately!

Looking forward to it! It starts at 7 on a Friday so she might be pretty punchy by the end...

The BC-UNH tilts this year have been very competitive, so this ought to be a good test for BC. I know UNH hasn't had a great season, but they still have a lot more talent on their roster than, for instance, Maine (no disrespect intended to them, but I think we can all agree the UNH team has gone through some adversity that has likely negatively impacted their place in the standings).

While I'd probably rather see BC play a game I expect them to win handily.... the matchup should make for an entertaining game Friday night.

I thought Maine had to work through some adversity.

They did, but they had a little more time to do so - beginning of the season vs semester break. I'm not sure how injury affected Maine, but we got hit hard with that too.

Maine - UVM all tied late in third. UVM was up 2-0. Bears mounted a comeback in the third.

Now in OT.

Posted this as a comment on BC Interruption, but thought it was interesting enough to bring over here:

With the boost to her save % from the UNH game, putting her on .944 for the season, Corinne Boyles is on course to be at the top of the BC all time single season record list.

1. .942 (48/781) Molly Schaus (10-11)
2. .938 (57/861) Molly Schaus (08-09)
3. .931 (64/866) Molly Schaus (06-07)
4. .927 (50/636) Corinne Boyles (12-13)
5. .925 (75/920) Molly Schaus (07-08)
6. .921 (79/927) Corinne Boyles (11-12)

…and her 1.59 GAA is heading for second overall.

1. 1.45 (48/1990) Molly Schaus (10-11)
2. 1.69 (57/2027) Molly Schaus (08-09)
3. 1.83 (50/1639) Corinne Boyles (12-13)
4. 1.90 (64/2016) Molly Schaus (06-07)
5. 2.15 (79/2203) Corinne Boyles (11-12)

It’s a far cry from the .910 % / 2.31 GAA she was on halfway through November. And her record since Christmas is 1.26 / 0.957 which, yes, those were weaker teams, but those are still insane numbers.

Save percentage is less affected by playing weaker teams, though -- that's insane. I never would have guessed that.

Yeah, that's mind boggling stuff.

We haven't come up with a meaningful statistical way to measure shot quality yet (though I bet we will in the coming years), so save percentage has the potential to be somewhat deceptive, but I agree, it's the best tool we have to measure goalies objectively...especially if we are talking 5-on-5 only (does anyone have that stat handy?)... so it's awfully hard to argue with those numbers.

I suppose one thing that could hold back perception of Boyles is that unlike Schaus, she's never really HAD to steal games for BC. She has been on very good teams every year with good defense. BC's defense as well as overall team depth was not nearly as good during the Schaus years so it was totally on Molly to stonewall opposing teams while BC's lower lines were on the ice, waiting for Stack, Thunstrom etc. to strike.

Actually, this fits with the research being done by the hockey analytics community. The quality of the skaters is better reflected by puck possession and shot attempts (including shots blocked and those that miss the net) than by goals allowed or save percentage. The evidence that some teams take higher quality shots on average than others is sufficiently weak that it's still debated whether the difference exists at all.

I think that the quality of shots tends to be more equal in men's hockey. Women's hockey has improved immensely in the last couple of decades, but there is still some disparity between the shots from the best snipers to even those in the middle of the pack, and definitely, the bottom end.

Quite possibly.

Re: Boston College Women's Hockey, '13-'14: Can we please have a title this time? Ple

Unfortunately, the folks at BC have a nasty habit of inflating their shots on net, and not counting many of those on their own tender.

In Miss Schaus' sophomore year many decried the drop in her save percentage. Well, lo and behold, every game I attended the shot count was off by five, six or seven. When you are seeing less than 30 shots a game that has an impact.

Conversely, Vermont was in for a game and Miss Douville was credited with something like 70 plus saves, when in fact she stopped 43.

This is a problem at every level and it's why some of the statistics companies are starting to send one of their own employees to every NHL game to keep track of ahots and attempted shots, as well as a couple of other things. So when you see someone using numbers that don't agree with the official NHL stats, that may be what is going on.
