Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Another win!

Milner looked early like a goalie making his first start...but he got a win and looked fine in the 2nd and 3rd.

Defense will be fine...Wey getting "burned" means he was in position to deflect the puck but unfortunately for him it bounced up and on to the tape of the forward who skated around him, if that puck goes forward the eagles are going the other way. All the defense continues to do an excellent job getting the rush and transition going through the their end of the ice.

SPEED of the Eagle forwards again puts consistent pressure on opponents all over the ice and will lead to many penalties. PP execution with really begin to open scoring margins on weaker opponents. Those PP goals will be essential against stronger teams come playoff time.

FINISHING their chances at a higher rate coupled with a "next goal" mentality will make this team very difficult to beat going forward.

I continue to like a lot about this team. A win Sunday is important to send a consistency message to the rest of the league.:)

With finishing, I would add getting pucks to the net. BC has always been a possession team under Jerry and staff, but sometimes this leads to a lot of perimeter play. If they make an effort to get pucks to the net and get some garbage goals, things will open up for them offensively.

I am excited to watch this team progress....

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Kenny...great point by you!

I believe this is a highly talented group of young forwards who are used to picking corners and going five hole. When targeting corners there are going to be more "not on goal" attempts. As this group starts to zero in the goals are going to go up on a per game average. Many of their chances will be out in front so follow-up to the net is important.

PP man in front of net with shots from the point does not seem to be part of the strategy at this point. They appear to be going high to low with lots of looks to the backdoor low to low which has not been successful so far. It will come.

Merrimack's forward hanging is certainly an adjustment for the defensemen and they must communicate better as they pass forward back and forth to one another while Eagles are in the offensive zone. It is a tactic these kids do not see all the time. 4-4 goals even strength during this "gimmick" strategy will make it go away. BC pressure pretty much eliminated in the 2nd and 3rd periods as Mack defenders tied under consistent pressure.

Hope the team comes to play today!:)

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

It wasn't pretty. Mack took it to us physically and rode us off a lot of pucks. The D and Muse struggled today, as the scoreboard shows (well, the score sheet, not the scoreboards... they were broken). Mack created havoc, turnovers, and some great chances off an aggressive forecheck.

On the positive side... there's no quit in this team. They fought hard to the end and I thought they actually had a chance of tying it up. Some great action in the third.

Anyone know the extent of Kreiders injury? He was out for some of the 2nd period and all of the third.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

For those of you who made it to the game today how did the scoreboard look? I reffed 3 youth games at Merrimack yesterday and the scoreboard did not work. We had a system where the timekeeper had to wave a yellow flag to tell us the end of the period, and he had to keep the time on his phone. As I was leaving a mechanic rushed to the scorer's box like an EMT. Any problems?

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

That's interesting since they all claimed that after breaking down in the last game, they fixed it and it worked fine all week until this morning.

Apparently they set up those small basketball time clocks in each bench and used an air horn to signal the end of the periods. It must have been tough for the guys on the ice not knowing how much time was left, especially on the PP or PK. Hopefully they can get this fixed asap.

From the Warrior Rink Rat blog:
No scoreboards until the semester break, possibly. The old units went out and new ones that were planned for next year the school is attempting to purchase early. Until then, Lawler is equipped with basketball time clocks and an air horn .... ]

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Great shots, and yes it is incredibly dark. I'm the editor of the student newspaper (former photo editor), and it's a pain the behind. We only just got 2.8 glass this year, you can imagine what it must have been like shooting with 4.0 :)

And ya it's a pretty nice arena to shoot hockey from save for the lighting. The penalty box is always a blast to shoot from...just have to watch out for pucks as there's no glass.

As for the scoreboards, they were originally going to replace them this coming summer along with the rest of the renovations. However, the recent troubles has moved them to purchase them sooner. They should be installed sometime over Christmas break.

There were too many tap in goals by Merrimack, which says that BC has to do a better job in front of their net. They were running around a lot defensively and not picking up guys in front, and that's never a recipe for success. I do agree that they didn't quit and fought hard without two of their top players.

It looked like Kreider just got his bell rung. In today's world kids have to sit down and take the rest of the game off. The loss of him and Whitney severely hurt their comeback chances.

Merrimack can score this year. They have always played hard, especially at home, but this year they have a few guys who can finish. They'll hang around all year, no doubt.

This was almost a carbon copy of the VT game. MC capitalized on some bang-bang plays out front. The rebound Muse dove for, but didn't reach, seemed to lie there forever. The D has got to clear that puck, or tie up the opponent.
A good learning experience for the young D. More to come... opponents will forecheck us relentlessly trying to force errors.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

BC has the hockey video online now - it's bigger (or atleast easier to view) on their facebook page, but can also be seen on http://bceagles.com by clicking on video - it's the first one. Can't figure out how to just get it on a page with a direct URL. Sorry.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

It's going to interesting watching our forwards on UNH's big ice. Me thinks they'll have some fun.
Gonna be equally interesting watching the D on the big sheet. This is a good group that I feel will progress each week, but I think we'll see more growing pains in New Hampshire.
This could be the shootout to end all shootouts. I predict 80 shots on net for the game. ;) :)

For clarification, Wey was NOT in position to deflect the puck. He was quite a few feet away as the pass was made, tried to get there with several hard strides, but missed by a few inches... there was no bouncing of the puck.

Rookie mistake but with the way things were going, there was no need to take a chance like this. BC has been largely dominating opponents but the mistakes are hitting the back of their net.

All in all, I'm happy with the defense, though. Rookie mistakes will happen the first half of the year as they get comfortable with the speed of the game.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Wow, that third period was pretty gross tonight. Let's hope there's no carryover tomorrow. Heckuva job by Muse in the overtime to save a point though.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Just got back from NH. What an empty feeling with the tie.
Gawd I hate that prevent defense we go into with a lead. Why the heII would you get away from the style of play that got you the 3 goal lead? It's like the kids are gonna get excommunicated from school if they dare put the puck on net.
Gawd that sucked. That's all I got to say about tonight.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Tough to give the point away, but you gotta love to see 4 power play goals. This team will draw penalties, so getting that PP going is huge.

Big game tonight. Three points is great in November.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

the sign of a young team is the inability to hold leads, its also the sign of a bad team. we'll see which one they are fairly soon.

saw they were up 4-1 on the out of town scoreboard at NU and couldnt believe it. when i saw the boxscore said they tied it was like a gutpunch.
