Re: Boston College Hockey, '12-'13, Volume II: #JohnnyHockey or #GaudreaubeyBaker?
Also, Tony Voce is historically very underrated. Great player who scored even when Ben Eaves was injured.
Funny you mentioned B.Eaves & Voce. After my last post this morning, I was thinking that Gaudreau/Whitney are as close as we've seen in comparison to them. Before I ran out the door to work, I did a quick check on their numbers.
2002-2003 Eaves 18-38-56, Voce 22-22-44
2003-2004 Eaves 9-25-34 (26 games), Voce 29-18-47
Voce was one hell of a shooter. Ben got the puck to him and it didn't take long for it to be on its way to the net.
Whitney has that skill, but he doesn't think 'shoot first'. He has a tendency to look for something better. He's had to work a little harder collecting his goals recently, so perhaps he's discovered he's a 'shooter'. He starts thinking 'shoot first' and he'll be lighting the lamp with greater frequency.
You don't break up tandems like Eaves/Voce, any more than you break up guys like Gaudreau/Whitney. Tough to stop skill like that. You can only hope to contain them and limit the damage. I'm hoping Jerry was giving them a wake-up call and eventually reunites them.
My thoughts on Linell... heck of a hockey player. I think he'll develop into a scorer, he has all the tools. But right now, he's a darn good grinder. Gaudreau doesn't need a grinder, he needs a guy that will bury his tape to tape passes. Give him the sniper.
