BOSTON COLLEGE 2025 - 2026

Hard to believe but today is the 20th anniversary of BC's 5-0 beatdown of BU in the Worcester regional final, sending BC to the Milwaukee Frozen Four where they stunned North Dakota in the semis behind a Chris Collins hat trick and got within a whisker of the national title. It was an important one as it set the stage (along with a stunning failure in 2007) for the 2008 national title and kept the even year iterations going through 2010 and 2012.

I'm sure in some corner of the internet that picture of the BU fans crying from the Worcester Telegram and Gazette is still around. 😁

Good times back when we had players with grit and the GOAT behind the bench. A lot has changed in 20 years.

I remember that one very well. Lost to BU 4 times that year. It was great to see the BU players parade to the box at the end of the game. They were frustrated and pissed off, Rooney had a great game, 2 goals and two assists.

We need two good defenseman to replace the holes left by Gustafsson, Fortescue and Minnetian. Radivojevic and Kostadinsky are the only two solid D-men left, and I am not sold on the latter, as he is big and slow. M. Hagens struggled early on D, Skahan is a train wreck-and will likely transfer out. Joyce is a train wreck.
Carson Woodall looks like.a great pickup as an offensive D-man. Can he defend well enough, is the question.
Callum Croskey-CHL-looked to have a good season in the Canadian JR’s and will likely arrive in the fall.
Cameron Chartrand is a big question mark, because he was injured and tried to come back and could not stay in the lineup. He may need to get healthy and play another season. Wathier (USNDT) also got injured and missed two months.. I watched him one game and he looked lost out there. Doubt he comes this Fall.
Transfer portal is a likely need here.
Lots of promising forwards coming-Pelletier (led USHL in goals) is a sniper. Graham jones looks like a quick skating, playmaker.. Teddy Mutryn had a break out offensive season in with Moncton. Casey Mutryn put up mediocre numbers with USNDT, but he looked good when I watched him play a game in mid-season.
Brady Kudrick had a good season with Chicago Steel, does not look like a top 6 forward, but you never know.
Where are the Brian Gibbons, Tony voce, Ryan Shannon, Ben Smith, Pat Mullane, Steve Whitney, type players who were fast playmakers that created offense?
We need to go back to finding speed and playmakers and forget the big and slow types IMHO. I like Oscar Hammer, but is he a fast enough skater?
I hope Brown remembers the great York teams and returns to that formula.
This year’s freshmen class was mediocre at best. Cornforth departed because he was buried on the 4th line, with no path to development.
We need another goaltender in here to compete with Cloutier. He was better than I expected, but less than the elite goalies we faced..

Good summary, I know very little (besides names) of the incoming group. I was surprised to see Skahan demoted over Joyce who was getting less 8 minutes ice time most games, but as has been pointed out it wasn't defense that led to the season ending tail spin it was offense. Hemming joined when he was 17 so he is very young but he needs to develop a more well rounded game. Big body, good shot but limited handle. LC needs to get better, but I am not sure Korec will want to spend another year watching from the bench, I wouldn't. Agree with those players you mentioned, we need more of those guys, I believe they were all 4 year players. Throw in a Jonnie G, Hayes bros and Kreider as well though they only gave us three years they were special players. We had some stud goalies as well. Looking forward to next season.

I accidentally gave Hemming a nickname for next season. The “hammer”.
Wonder if Conmy returns for his senior year. I agree with some of the above on his lack of goal scoring on 5 x 5..but the guy makes good passes, plays tough along the wall and I expect he may bounce back with more goals next season. Stiga needs to bounce back next season, He has trouble staying on his skates. Tries to make too many moves. Perhaps simplify his game somewhat.
Wish James Hagens well with Bruins.. I am not convinced he is an NHL star..he was moved off center here for a reason..he is at his best in open ice particularly on the PP. His defense was uninspiring and while his goal scoring flourished once placed on the wing, his work along the wall needs work. The Hagens-Stiga combination never flourished here, like it did with the USNDT. Stiga looked good at center in game vs. Maine.
Brown needs to prioritize centers. You can’t just stick somebody at center and expect a cohesive unit. These types should be your best skaters, puck handlers, and passers. If you lack these, the rest of your line becomes less effective. I heard the Brown was after a German kid-
Dustin xxx, who played in the World Juniors. He looked exactly like a Brian Gibbons type player..

Croskery i believe isn't meant to arrive until 2027, but it could change. Soo treats their players well though.

NTDP was mediocre on the whole last year, Casey was one of the brighter spots of this crop. He got the C bc he was clearly the guy dragging the rest of them into the fight. Teddy I've watching all year (including currently for game 1 of the playoff, where ironically he set up Cornforth for the first 2 goals.. 3 points in game 1) and he's been spectacular, great at pissing opponents off which is prob why he got a few injuries. both are just hard workers, not afraid of the dirty work.

A guy missing in this is Matthew Frost. I'm guessing there's a few higher end players in their sights that aren't wanting to commit before their season ends, plenty of kids don't want to be a distraction. CHL Playoffs just started, so give it a few weeks, maybe longer depending on who they're courting.

Dustin Willhöft, plays for Saskatoon in WHL. they're the 6th seed in the East so might be a swift exit...

Cinnamoroll—two questions for you:

1. How does signing an ELC work with the Canadian juniors? I see Gabe Smith from Moncton signed his ELC with Utah last Spring and played the season with Moncton. I’m guessing Carboneau and Desnoyer are same deal? And Pickford in the WHL. These guys don’t get paid do they? Or do they go back to juniors to continue developing and still get to burn a year of the ELC? If this is the way it goes it seems inevitable the ncaa will end up doing the same at some point.

2. Do you know what’s going on with the USNDPT? Mediocre is being kind. And they weren’t great last year either. At the same time the roster is huge. There are some very good prospects on that roster that aren’t playing a lot of games. Do they play elsewhere? It’s kind of hard to believe Pelosi has only played a handful of games compared to a full ushl schedule.

Rooney's goals were shorties, on separate kills within a three-minute span in the second period.

1. sending a kid back to juniors before they hit 10 NHL games doesn't burn a year on their ELC, but the signing bonuses still pay out. those are well above the cutoff number for college eligibility. also i think the idea is the pro players thing mainly applies now for the kids that never had the college option beforehand bc of CHL rules. there might be something that can be done with returning the money etc, but it would be quite the feat.

2. yea ntdp has been pretty stinky for a bit. i haven't done enough research into the specifics of it, but the broader picture im seeing is the model hasn't evolved much in the past few years. all the programs around them caught up or are even lapping them in their player dev, and all of the sudden the more suspect behaviors they used to get away with is no longer easily pushed aside because it isn't working.

more and more kids are not making the transition to college hockey smoothly- easy example is Amico because he left mid-season to go back to USHL- and the players are obviously noticing, which is why you saw Kvasnicka, Phillips, Boettiger, and Quinlan all doing another year of juniors after aging out, plus Hurlbert leaving after U17. there's also the fact that their schedule and setup is vastly different from others and they're basically half-in-half-out with the USHL... speaking of-

as for the discrepancy in number of games and the shifting roster size, the amount of USHL games played by NTDP is not very big and while NTDP makes the distinction between U17 or U18, the USHL considers them one entity and one spot in the standings playoffs etc. They will also have call ups needed, sometimes U17 kids get called up to the U18. the schedule is essentially USHL games, whichever international tournament is going on, and the U18s play against some colleges too.

per the NTDP game log, Pelosi played in 51 games w U17 and 1 game w U18 in february. only a few teammates played more games than him.

This is all great stuff. Thanks for posting here and thanks for the CHL mega thread. It’s some of the best information out there on how college hockey is evolving with the USHL and CHL.

- On Hagens and a potential call-up - most mentions of the comparison to McAvoy that I have heard have failed to mention that McAvoy's call-up was not in the original plans but their d-corps was getting hammered with injuries. I don't think calling up someone to have their first NHL games be in the playoffs would be part of any teams plans. It was just out of necessity.
- On 2006 - I prefer to remember the HE Championship :) . But in Worcester, the cough up in our own zone for the first BC goal was the first sign to me that it was time for a new coach (yes, I know JP won us a title 3 years later). BU had been doing that drop pass by their own net all season, and York made a great call to disrupt it. Not having the team ready to adjust if a team played it aggressively was inexcusable. BU never recovered and it got ugly in the end.
- On the USNTDP - no doubt the program is on the downslide since the incredible Hughes/Boldy/Caufield/Zegras/Helleson/Vlasic/Knight class. Murtagh was the second leading scorer last season and struggled to produce at BU. I think Moore did ok for BC but certainly didn't light it up. There are rumors of Carter Meyer joining his older brother in the Q next season rather than play for the U-18s (he has pretty much been playing up with them for the past couple months).
