Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

So any ideas on what the lines might be next year? Also, any update on whether Destray Straight is coming this year? I think it would be a good idea as he'll likely take a year to develop and we'll REALLY need him to be producing in 2012.

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Just because Cav is the head assistant during this great BC run, doesn't mean that the great run will continue if he were to follow York as the Head Coach. Remember when Cedorchuk took over from Ceglarski? Cavanagh may recruit the players, but York closes the deals. This is not a knock on Cavanagh. He is immensely important to the BC program. After seeing situations with other guys (Cedorchuk, Paluch, Pooley), I believe that being a great Assistant doesn't necessarily mean that you will be a great Head Coach. The two guys Providence seemed to whittle their decision to both had experience as Head Coaches.

If you are going to reference a few assistant's that haven't panned out as heads, you should also reference the hundreds that have been successful. It's true you never know, but I personally think he has more talent than Cedar or Pooch.

Like York himself.

You may be right that Cavanagh has more talent than the guys I used as examples. I wasn't trying to diss Cavanagh. Yes, many assistants do go on to be successful Head Coaches. Most have to leave the program they are at and become HC at another program. The only recent example I can think of where an Assistant stepped up to HC and kept the program at the same level is when Blais left NoDak and Hakstol took over. That is tougher to do than going to a down and out program and starting from the basement.

Interesting night in Chicago for former Eagles.

Go Hawks!

Looks like hokydad was actually onto something with the Samuelsson to Sweden story:

From this article: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/spor...+hockey/4662263/story.html?cid=megadrop_story

not worth arguing with the never been from dover. lot can change between now and next sept. pitt didnt want him and when a team makes their mind up, they have an amazing way to prove themselves correct.

I dont get the "never had a break" statement. Never having a break is playing 75 or 80 games and living on a bus. College is like a vacation compared to AHL/ECHL.

I thought that was strange myself. We're talking about a kid who spent part of the summer hanging out in Sweden and didn't even go to the Pens development camp last summer I believe.

A lot of things fell into place for this situation to happen. I hope this is what he wanted and not what dad wanted. In the end, I think the Penguins went WAY overboard spending a 2nd round pick on him. We're talking 5th round talent with a 1st round last name. If he was a 5th rounder, would dad have let him stick around BC to get a degree? Who knows? Probably more likely. And probably a lot easier for Pittsburgh to say "Enjoy Sweden" if that was the choice they were given with a lower pick putting the decision to them like that.

Tough to say if he developed or not at BC. He was always wildly inconsistent and was wretched in the last month of the season.

He does seem like a nice kid, though and he's sticking around to finish these classes off.

Re: Boston College 2011-2012 season outlook

Except that he always gets ahead of himself and simply says "Pittsburgh doesn't want him, he's going to the SEL". Turns out with the option of losing him to the SEL, Pittsburgh did in fact want to sign him.

wait and see the end result....

..... and not what dad wanted.

ulf is not afraid to speak out when he (thinks) he's right. at "ulf night" in the civic arena after he retired he was thanking everyone and when he mentioned craig patrick the boos rained down on the ice (this was after the sell off of players for nothing [think of the jagr deal] and pittsburghers held patrick accountable). ulfie changed his tone and told everyone to stop it. he said, quote, "it's not easy to do your job with both arms tied behind your back" and people stopped. rather interesting jab at the team that brought you in for the "night" and no doubt set him up for the week.

Yup, they really wanted him badly. Once under contract, AHL peanuts, they control everything including who dresses etc. Let this play out....

but even (Penguins general manager) Ray Shero told Philip they didn’t want to sign him. Then, the kid said, ‘OK, then I’ll go and play in Sweden.’ Ray wanted more control, so signed him reluctantly.”
