Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Let us gather on the campus,
make the gray old Maples ring
with the songs of alma mater,
with the songs we love to sing.
..

Take care of our house here, Green.
Good luck against those Wildcats!

Great camera work.
Leaves me disappointed, however.
Was really 5-1.

No more Glee Club...

And UConn in Cambridge last week lost by one (2-1); prior to that Huskies won three and tied one(actually, won four as 'tie' was shoot-out which they won.)

So we are there for two and then at Quinnipiac and Princeton after Vermont in Hanover January 30.

I wasn't there (UNH, recent games); is season close to (beyond) getting away from them...us?

Hard to say . . . Remember, all it takes is to win the ECAC tourney (not that I'm predicting that) for a team to get to the NCAAs.
The good news is that the first period last night was probably Dartmouth's best of the year. That was great hockey to watch. Somehow in the second there was a let down (not the first time that has happened this season). Penalties definitely hurt, and the UNH goalie was stellar so there was no catching up.
This team has talent but really hasn't put it together for a whole 60 minutes yet. We'll see if that comes in the 2nd half. We are not out of the race for a home ice playoff spot yet.

UConn 3, DC 2 on Sat.
Same teams at it again today. 2010 finds Dartmouth still looking for consistency . . .

We went up to the game at Quinnipiac. Is some campus they are building on a hill! View over New Haven and the Sound- more! State of the art rink and many new structures. T D (Toronto Dominion) Bank rink is tied into a dual structure with basketball arena - and state of the art snack bar in between was open despite few people ; announcer announcing play to maybe fifty folks.

Amanda T. out. Team worked hard. "Out skated", by Quinnipiac my brother thought, though. As in better skaters in better physical condition wanting it more, perhaps (especially in the third period which I thought predictable as Dartmouth lead going into it.)

Home team brings it when the chips are down. Especially Q as they recently had the ECAC ' All Star ' game here and are preening with this a-building new spectacular site.

There was a disallowed goal by Dartmouth early. Scrum in front and puck went in - assume a ' kick ' . Longish discussion with Coach Hudak and ref after the call and before play resumed. Large central screen didn ' t show play for all of us to review as well.

In my opinion, skaters on attack aren't matched by skaters on defense. Maybe, in some cases, many reps needed. Back and forth, back and forth. Also, certain defenders caught ' up ' or , lolly-gagging (may be too strong- 'winded' ...); and Quinipiac often seemed on the verge of breakaways, two on one. Better conditioning, continue pressuring (but such not needed by those who have always given more than called upon for-Cunningham, Parsons, et al.)

Good play by some newcomers, too: Nanji, Sally Komarek centered the first line and Camile Dumais worked hard, others. I liked defense of Moira Scanlon / Sue Schmitz.

I think will come!

Keep at it D. We love you!

I see Trunzo was back for Tigers (seven shots and two goals!) Didn't start at Q, so don't know what/why there. See Q leading Crimson (team colors) team despite wide shot differential. But no Kessler for this, I think, Boston, Massachusetts based college. Not- NOT, Hartford, Harford, Hafr...; Q in Hamden so other may come to me.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Another tough weekend for the Big Green. A couple bright spots: Sarah Parsons' 4 goals on the weekend, and dartmouth played better on Sat. vs. Cornell than they had the nite before. The passing was considerably better as was the defensive play overall. They played hard and much more consistently throughout the game.

Yesterday's local paper (the Valley News) had an interview with Coach Hudak giving his perspective on this season's difficulties. (Unfortunately the article isn't avail. online.) One statement seemed to sum things up: "We're young and even our senior goaltender didn't play a lot last year. we've got a couple of injuries and there seems to be enough there that we really can't get rolling." Mark also noted ". . . that youth is getting a lot of experience and it looks good for us in the future. Not just for next season, but for the end of this one.

I'll add one thing. It's true that we fans have been spoiled, but we realize that we can't hang a banner every single year. What is most important to me is to see the team play Dartmouth hockey, which means together as a team and with lots of heart.

Looks like a tough race between Colgate, Dartmouth, and Yale for the last ECAC playoff spot. Crazy to think Dartmouth might not even get to the ECAC tourney, 1 year after winning the whole thing! Brown fell off the cliff as rapidly, finishing 9th in 06-07 a year after being ECAC regular season runner-up (and hasn't made the playoffs since).

If you told me that Dartmouth freshman class with in 2006 with Cunningham and Parsons would take 3 NCAA berths and 2 ECAC titles and then miss the ECAC playoffs senior year, I'd never have believed it. Also, crazy for me to imagine an ECAC tournament without either Dartmouth or Brown, given the great ECAC playoff battles these teams had in 2000-01 and 2001-02 when I first started watching this sport. But credit to the rest of the ECAC for catching up.

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

Much like Red Sox fans keeping an eye out for how the Yankees are doing, Harvard fans like to keep one eye out for Dartmouth. So to say we are surprised at what is going on in Hanover would be an understatement. Since I've been watching women's hockey (late 90's), Dartmouth has always had a top notch program and a strong rivalry with Harvard. Not to say that isn't true this year but it is somewhat of a shock to see them struggling to make the playoffs.

I'm planning to be at the H-D game on Friday to visit my niece who is a sophomore at Dartmouth (I actually steered her there and away from Williams). It should be a great game as both teams need the points.

Thoughts on why the team hasn't performed this year? Goaltending? Injuries? Inconsistent play (that's hard to believe)?

Re: Big Green ! Dartmouth Women ' s Hockey , 2009 - 2010

My view entirely from the outside -- it's easy just to pin it on goaltending post-Clemis based on the stats but the team also graduated three senior D last season. Also note that Dartmouth wasn't that great a defensive team to begin with -- last season they were 18th in goals per game and now they're 27th. So that seems like the simplest explanation.

Even the great teams of recent Dartmouth history didn't stand out as much defensively. Under Hudak, the 2003-04 team was 11th in GPG allowed, and the 2004-05 edition was 13th. The 2006-07 team, probably the last one with a realistic hope of winning it all, was 5th defensively, but they allowed almost twice as many GPG as the team at #1. All of those teams were in the top 4 offensively, so it is probably no coincidence that when one starts to list great players for the Big Green over the years, they tend to be forwards.

Is the recent decline that Hudak isn't getting the same caliber of players that Oberting did, that the staff hasn't adjusted the style for the type of talent, is the game evolving, or is this an anomaly and Dartmouth will be back at the top soon?
