Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Maybe because the first two statements are wrong?

So he didn't offer evidence?

stack said:
I put North Dakota and Minnesota number one because:
- most games played, most national titles between rivals, and truly hate each other

Regarding the first statement, reasoning is subjective anyways.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Where that article loses me is putting UND-UMN at #6. I could understand #2 or even #3, but #6? No.

That's probably because he had Minnesota and Wisconsin at #2, and he's spreading the rivalries out around the country.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

This point makes lots of sense. Take a look at other huge college rivalries. Ask a Dook fan who they hate most - answer is the same. Ask a UNC fan who they hate most - answer is the same. Ask an Ohio St./Michigan fan - answer is the same. Ask an Auburn/Alabama fan, a USC/UCLA fan, etc. It doesn't necessarily diminish the individual rivalries of UM-UW/UND but that UM fans may be split on who they view as their biggest rival makes it difficult to call one of them the greatest in the sport.

Actually, if you asked Michigan football fans there'd be some kind of split between Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Michigan State. The fact that Ohio State/Michigan was still voted the #1 rivalry in all of sports is the exact opposite of what you're trying to say.

I'm not going to argue with that. I remember I was first sent that article during a UMN-UW series and at the time I couldn't agree more that UW was our biggest rival. Then come UND-UMN series I didn't give two ****s about wisconsin.

This UMN-UND/UW this has obviously been argued to death. Every time it comes up I find that the relatively younger fans (myself included) tend to see UND as our biggest rival while the older generation tends to go with UW. Of course there are exceptions but it just seemed to be the trend I noticed.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

If we're talking other sports, I always hear someone bring up Lehigh and Lafayette. It is known as "The Rivalry" since (IIRC) it's the oldest football rivalry on record. Again, I'm going of memory here and I could probably look it up but meh.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

He did offer evidence to support his opinion, it just wasn't accurate. Michigan/Michigan State have played 269 games and have a combined 12 championships, the same as Minnesota/UND. That entirely contradicts his claim of most games played and most national titles between rivals.

While part of me believes UM/UND or UM/UW has to be in the mix, this is one of those discussions in which I personally won't proclaim there's only one answer. Too many variables, too many influences on those that opine, and given I've never been able to attend a UMi/MSU, BC/BU or hell even UAA/UA game, I don't feel I'm in position to argue in favor of one definitive answer.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Here's the fallacy that NU fans still believe in. This is basically an average rivalry in conference - if the two schools weren't located near one another you'd be no more on our radar than Lowell or PC. Granted location elevates it, but ask a BU fan what games he/she is looking forward to on September 30 of a certain year, the list will likely go:
1. BC
2. Beanpot
3. Big time OOC game (ND/Michigan/Cornell this year)
4. UNH
5. A cluster of Maine (who historically would be in the 2/3 slot), NU, UVM
6. Others

That sums up why everyone detests BU. Well done mate.

Get out of here. Where is the arrogance?

I concur. It's all subjective analysis and opinions anyway. The only legitimacy I would give any ranking is from someone who's been to many games among all of the supposed rivals across several years, and even then said ranking is likely to be biased in some manner. While I love the Michigan/Michigan State rivalry, I could never claim it to be the best.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

You can't discredit their rivalries because they have more than one.

i'm with mr cornell though at the heart of this. you can have rivals... but if you need a 'biggest', y'all should agree on who it is.

That sums up why everyone detests BU. Well done mate.

(makes my heart warm!)
it's been so long since we've been able to read this!! thanks!!

BU/NU (up tomorrow night!)

Ok Ok... maybe its not the best in college hockey, but it's up there, and its tomorrow.

NU?!?!?! who can consider a rival to be the poor kid that even the red-headed step child slaps around?!?!?

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

No one has mentioned UW-UND. They have more titles between them than anyone else and I believe they are responsible for officials being on the ice during warm ups.

The UND-SCSU rivalry is pretty intense and between them they have seven titles. :)
