Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

I've been to a BU/BC game when I was in Boston for the weekend and quite honestly outside the 2 campuses it doesn't seem that many give a rat's behind. I was fairly upset the I went to a sports bar after the game and all I saw were some green jerseys for some other apparent sport they play in Boston.

I don't know much about Mich/MSU and UMTC/ND or WI, but from the sounds of the thread, ND has much more of a "rivalry" with UM than the Gophers really care about. I've seen the same thing with RIP and Clarkson; the Chickenhawks get up for the rivalry game while for Tech it's just another game. I'd imagine anything Mich/MSU and UMTC/WI would be quite contentious.

The Clarkson/SLU rivalry envelops both campuses and both of the towns. Potsdam residents literally won't talk to their relatives that live in Canton. Every townie bar has the game on TV. The entire week before the games are filled with back and forth pranks between the campuses. I can imagine this might happen elsewhere in college hockey, but at CCT and SLU, this is literally the one and only sport.

The oddest thing about the SLU/Clarkson rivalry is as much as our fans are fierce rivals on game weekends, it seems that after the game the fans of both teams have an odd respect for each other. Maybe it's the common experience of both student bodies living in the North Country. I know personally that I have a great deal of respect for Coach Marsh and the program he runs over there and even the fans but for a few weekends a year they are (t) and must be destroyed. :D

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

I am sorry your final. It still does not sell out and the CCHA still sucks.;)

The CCHA is not a terrific all-around conference but there are a few good teams. Check the Nov. 2nd poll, there are 4 CCHA teams in the Top 10. The wcha has 2, that will change but...

BTW, the Midwest has more than College Hockey going on for people to spend their money on.

Just sayin'...

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Oh right, this weekend reminded me about:

Bob Gaudet-coached teams vs. the rules by which hockey is played

Ted Donato vs. male-pattern baldness

That's just not fair. Male-pattern baldness wins everytime, Donato or no Donato.

I was at the Clarkson @ St. Lawrence game last year, and it was a lot of fun. It wasn't an electric rivalry in terms of frothing-at-the-mouth hatred or anything like I see at BC-BU, BU-NU, UNH-Maine, etc. It did seem like both sides had a healthy respect for one another. But it was a lot of fun, and you could feel the passion in the stands.

I really enjoyed Appleton Arena, and the way the fans stomped their feet on the wooden seats and sang 'when the Saints go marching in...' It's a nice touch.

As for the BC-BU rivalry extending to other sports - no, BU doesn't have a football team, but the annual soccer matches between BC and BU (men and women) are usually pretty ferocious and hard-fought, no matter where the teams are ranked. This year for the BC @ BU game, both teams actually had large and raucous student sections, which I'd imagine is pretty rare in college soccer, and it got pretty hostile.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

I'm still saying come to Yost Friday night to see some real hatred. The combination of our lack-luster season thus far, the train-wreck that is our Football program currently, Tropp/Conboy's shenanigans from last year, and spartys overall annoying presence will prove to anyone without a shadow of a doubt how much Michigan Hockey fans despise sparty.

I'm sorry, I have to agree. It seemed like an average rivalry to me. Nothing too crazy.

Is that game being televised on a National outlet at all? I would enjoy watching it, seeing as my Gophers don't play this Friday.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

PC's fan base vs Tim Army
With PC's fan base vs Rick Barnes/Pete Gillen/Tim Welsh/Keano Davis as an undercard.

With Pooley as the ref.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

How about:

BU fanboys vs. Star Wars fanboys
UMass students vs. Class
UVM fans vs. People against the legalization of marijuana
Blaise McDonald vs. A breathalyzer test
NU students vs. Roxbury homeless people

I thought NU students were Roxbury homeless people :D
