Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

There's only one rivalry where the teams have faced off for the National Championship four times. 1958, 1963, 1968 & 2005...

DU vs. UND. 14 National Championships between them.

Fortunately, DU is 3-1 in those games.

DU is probably UND's third rival after Minnesota and Wisconsin, although in recent years, DU may have crept up alongside the Badgers into the #2 slot. DU knocking out UND's top rated team in 2004 in the NCAA regional, followed by the Paukovich/Bina incident in 2005, followed by DU beating UND in the WCHA and NCAA title games and more recent brawls, ice walks and "dasher dances" have stoked the fires....

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Heh...I figured that'd be a secondary/tertiary rival (Bennett. v. STDs = BC v. BU, Bennett v. Pucks = BU vs. NU :p )

No, because there's little evidence of Bennett's rivalry with STD's, whereas his rivalry with pucks is well documented, so you appear to have your comparisons flipped.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Yeah, I went back and looked at the entire history of the WCHA and the three-way rivalry's golden years very well could have been circa 1978/79 to 1994/95. A long stretch, I know, but Minnesota finished in the top three of the league 16 years straight, wisconsin 15 of 17 (11 straight), and UND 8 of 17 years. The three teams combined to win 7 NCAA titles in that stretch and FIVE in a row. Man, to be a fan of one of those teams during those years...

You could trace it back earlier than that.

1973 Wisconsin 4-2 Denver Boston, Massachusetts
1974 Minnesota 4-2 Michigan Tech. Boston, Massachusetts
1975 Michigan Tech. 6-1 Minnesota St. Louis, Missouri
1976 Minnesota 6-4 Michigan Tech. Denver, Colorado
1977 Wisconsin 6-5 (ot) Michigan Detroit, Michigan
1978 Boston University 5-3 Boston College Providence, Rhode Island
1979 Minnesota 4-3 North Dakota Detroit, Michigan
1980 North Dakota 5-2 Northern Michigan Providence, Rhode Island
1981 Wisconsin 6-3 Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota
1982 North Dakota 5-2 Wisconsin Providence, Rhode Island
1983 Wisconsin 6-2 Harvard Grand Forks, North Dakota

An 11 year stretch, 9 national titles, 4 runner-ups, and 3 head-to-head championship games.

Not only were they all duking it out in the league, they were all national powers as well.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

BU/NU (up tomorrow night!)

Ok Ok... maybe its not the best in college hockey, but it's up there, and its tomorrow.
Obviously, BC is a much bigger rival for BU. But I think an NU/BU rivalry has a lot of potential. The shared history of Matthews, proximity, and Beanpot are obvious factors. More importantly, NU doesn't have interest siphoned away from hockey like BC does with football and basketball.

Lately, there has been heightened intensity and I'm sure tonight will be no exception. Now if NU could just put together a few years in a row of not sucking, we might have something. :p

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Gopher/Sioux followed by BU/BC followed by Michigan/Michigan State.

Game over.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

Love... ;)

When Minnesota is here with all their fat guy 25 year old fans wearing those horrible jerseys(especially love the neon-urine alternate), spelling out their state and all the other stupid things they do, I'm sure that I hate them more than anything in this whole wide world.

Then, the mullets show up and I have to rethink things.

I hate them both, but I hate the Gophers more and that's probably because of the other layers that go into that rivalry. Football, basketball, Vikings, Twins, endless prairie, black flies, Minnesotans, etc. :D

As a wisco fan i obviously think it's UW/MN. I definetely want to beat UND, but we only see them twice a year, and it's only for hockey, so i dont really care about them as long as they don't get any more NCAA's - since they are currently beating us 7-6 in that category ( i believe). We have to see those ugly Golden/Marronish whatever colored jerseys at least 5 times a year so the hatred is almost year round. The Vikes/Pack and now Favre thing ads to it too.

Edit: This is just coming from a Wisconsin fan.

You mean that BU?

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

I vote for the one that started last April in DC. BU v Miami. That game was sick! I think the Redhawks may take that lesson all the way back to Detroit.

Re: Best Rivalry in College Hockey???

I don't know if it is even a rivalry, but SLU-RPI should be considered just because of the name.
