BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

TTT, not surprising you ran into trouble at Harvard. Had they allowed you to play, be it a trumpet or kazzoo, it would have revealed how terrible their band is by comparison.

Looking for a Harvard source to quote in regard to the Harvard band? Here's a post from last year's Wisco-Hvd game by one Harvard poster that I particularly admire, for mixing keen insights with a flair for turning a phrase (i.e. me):

"Just because the band looked weird or goofy or pathetic doesn't mean they weren't authentic; they often look that way other than at football games. What exactly were the musicians at the rink wearing? Sometimes the band wears replica uniforms of the sport in question, even though in this case most of them probably couldn't keep their balance on double runners, like an eight year old at a Bruins game wearing a "CHARA" sweater. I repeat, just because the band looked embarrassingly bad doesn't mean they weren't real. We've been embarrassed by them over the decades.

"Another possibility: they may have been Schneider's Band, which is a subset of the band which does illegal stuff such as stopping to serenade the Brown campus before dawn during a bus trip to points south elsewhere along I-95. The Schneiders are carefully auditioned for lack of musical talent so that if they are arrested by campus police, they won't be missed."

Though when I come to think of it, that may not differentiate the Schneiders from the rest of the band....

Northeastern was leading that game with less than 10 minutes to go in the game. Easily could've gone the other way.

But it didn't.

The point is - despite Ted Knight's claim - Wisconsin played three-quarters of the Beanpot field in 2013-2014, and beat all three.

(And didn't somebody post here last year that the "Harvard band" that showed up at LaBahn wasn't a Harvard band at all, but was hired from somewhere local to impersonate a Harvard band?)

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Probably misunderstanding this but if it was Pokechecker against Ted Knight? I'd pay to see that. ;)
I don't know if you've ever met Teddy, but I have, and trust me, my money is on Teddy.

I would pay just to see pokechecker in real life. Has anyone actually met him?

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Last year, Nov 2013, Wisconsin played Northeastern and BU on consecutive nights, at a neutral site (Vail, CO). UW beat Northeastern 3-2, and BU 5-0.

(Edit: and then beat Harvard in the NCAA quarterfinals, 2-1. Tight game. Could have gone either way.)

Harvard minus Olympians...they probably would have beaten BC too. take Coyne off Northeastern and they are under .500...what does last year have to do with this year?

didn't Denver beat NE last year? nothing to do with this year.

Annie Pankowski.

UW is better this year than last year, too. Probably not a lot better, but better.

Yes, I think they said they confirmed it with a Harvard sports info person, and on the rather indistinct video the players didn't look much like the real Bandsters: insufficiently weird.

Tried to search the board's archives for relevant quotes but they seem to cut off around March 2014: maybe somebody else can find something.

The culprit was evidently that the NCAA limits the number of plane tickets for women's hockey compared to (for example) the 75 seats per team for men's basketball....

Couple things --

1) The NCAA limits what they'll reimburse. The school is free to pay out of pocket for whatever it wants. I am pretty certain that BC sent a band to Ridder a couple years ago.

2) Unfortunately, the 'hiring a local band to represent the school' thing is pretty common. Last year BC played UConn at Madison Square Garden (a bus ride away!) and the people wearing BC shirts playing instruments were definitely some local high school.

EDIT: By the way, looking at points 1 and 2 together says a lot about the BC AD's priorities, doesn't it? haha

I'll make the same point I made last year during the 'Harvard band' discussion: if all they wanted was for the team to be able to hear the fight song get played a couple times during the course of the night, they didn't need to hire a band. At Wisconsin football games, the UW band *always* plays the other team's fight song (if their band isn't there). Doesn't matter if it is Michigan, or Ohio State, or some 'nobody' Div II team; they learn the song, they play it at the pre-game pep rally, and in the stadium before kick-off, and after the game during the 'fifth quarter'.

I have no doubt that the UW band at LaBahn would have been happy to play the Harvard fight song a time or two.

Does Pokechecker even exist in real life? Exactly...And even if they had would they admit it?

Play it? Yes, nice touch! Appreciated! But what if playing it were to invite a singalong from the Harvard spectators? Be careful...the ordinary English lyrics are innocuous, but the Band (with their characteristic whatever) has added two sets of Latin lyrics, one of which is only mildly obscene (illegitimum non carborundum = don't let the ******** get you down) but the second verse is so unbelievably offensive that I can't even give you a hint in either language. Chalk up one more for the Band when you can't hear your own school's fight song being played without thinking of embarrassing stuff that you'd never hear even in a rap song.

One of the 'other' songs (not fight song, not alma mater, etc) that always gets played at UW games is called "If You Want To Be a Badger"; somewhere over the last X years "those darn kids" have changed a line to where they happily yell out in plain English ",,, by the light, shiny light of the M F ing moon...". Not many would have minded what the Harvard girls were singing to themselves as they warmed up. (Edit: though I hasten to point out that that version is sung much more at football and men's hockey than at women's hockey.)

Harvard minus Olympians...

.

the only reason Harvard had Olympians is because the coach was from Harvard and wanted to red shirt some players so she'd have them an extra year when she got back from losing Gold

...what does last year have to do with this year?

last year they were a B list team
this year they are too

Only if it were to the death.
wouldn't have it any other way

this is nothing new, several decades ago Maine showed up for the final four and hired Blaine High School to be their band

I think it's an east coast thing
kinda like hockey, they have to bring in outsiders 'cuz they other than drug pushers, prostitutes, and mob types
there's nobody decent to be found

And in 2009 the Bemidji mens team didn't bring a band to Grand Rapids for the regional, so we were subjected to the Notre Dame band playing their fight song ad nauseum (like Tennessee's band did at a basketball tourney game I was at a few years ago every **** song transitioned into it)...

And then after they made the miraculous Frozen Four trip they still did not send a band. They hired George Mason's pep band.

They might not have one. Went to a mens game & there was no band. But that was a few years ago now, at their old place.
