Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR
Hello! I am not dead. Hooray.
I was able to kind of process everything from last night so I'll just kind of put all my thoughts here rapidfire. I'm not sure how tl;dr this will be so apologies in advance.
--Man. That sucks.
--First off, it was so so so so so so SO great to hang out with my friends. I know CT seems like a brisk walk away from Boston for you midwestern elitists D) but I haven't been able to get up to see everyone and hang out for a long time (more than just game time) in what feels like years. Was able to hang out with Joe pretty much the entire day whooping him in pool, met Arthur Bailin from the Heights who was just awesome and fit right into our crew, and then hung out with them, DogHouse, and wwyte after the game for a pretty long time too. I got home at 2:30am and it was absolutely worth it.
--My biggest frustration by far came off the ice. BC did not send a band, which as Wisconsin fans know, is total BS, but even more frustrating is that they have send the band to the Beanpot final every single year that I can remember. The new band leadership elected not to go to any women's games this year at all in the beginning of the season, and when requested of them for the Beanpot, as the #1 team in the country and undefeated, they declined again. That's an embarrassment.
So, I brought my trumpet, like I've done for 9 years and have never had a problem. Well, Harvard had a problem with it. A TeamOps Nazi came up and very confrontationally told me I was not allowed to play. I explained that I've never had a problem before, and have brought it to Harvard many times before, and haven't had a problem. I asked him what if I got permission from BC to represent the band, and he told me"BC has no authority, this is not BC's house." Obnoxious.
So I found the BC SID who was happy to run up to Harvard ops and get their OK. Harvard Ops, I am completely flabbergasted to say, said absolutely not. I had her ask again, further explaining the situation, expressing my frustration that someone is trying to show support and enthusiasm for this sport and maybe it would be a good idea not to try and snuff that out, she went back up, and apparently it went all the way up to Joe Bertagna (Harvard alum!who said absolutely not, no noisemakers, bands only.
Needless to say I'm frustrated and want to thank Harvard for doing their absolute best to stay true to the Harvard way by being total douchnozzles. Veri****ingtas, assholes.
--On the ice. The first 8-9 minutes of the game were freaking nuts. BC came out like the Soviets in their prime and frankly it's a miracle it wasn't 5-0 before Harvard decided to show up. BC had I think the first 8 shots of the game, all in the first like 6 minutes.
Then it got considerably closer from there. Harvard settled down I guess and put a ton of work into getting bodies and sticks in the slot and snuffing us out. I was very impressed.
--I haven't yet put together the recap, it'll be tonight because I have to work (leaving in errrr 30 seconds), but the 2nd Harvard goal was a defensive breakdown the likes of which I don't think I've ever seen out of BC. Yikes. The first and the third if memory serves Burt was able to make the save but Harvard got to the rebound first. So depressing.
-Having said that, I don't think either BC goal was all that great. For all the talk of Maschmeyer keeping Harvard in it at the end, she was a sieve on those two goals. Nice shots, yes, but I was surprised that both went in.
--The 3rd period I thought BC played really well. I can't believe they didn't tie it, they created all of the chances.
--I'm didn't think the refereeing was the worst I've ever seen. There were a couple awful calls against BC but otherwise it went both ways. The couple calls I'm referring to are the 5 minute major (that was just ludicrous) and the icing at the end of the game called against BC while on the penalty kill that ended the game prematurely.
--WOW. What an atmosphere. Outside of last year's championship that was easily the best atmosphere for a women's game I've ever personally attended. BC sent a bus of about 30-40 students who were LOUD and in it the whole game. Harvard's band was terrible and should still invest in a tuner, obviously, but they were as obnoxious (in a fun, raucous way) as ever. The rest of the crowd was a surprisingly even split between BC and Harvard, I thought.
--Man what a fun game. Crowd was nuts. I loved it. But man oh man does it suck to lose the streak, obviously, but also to have it be in the Beanpot. That really blows.
--Thanks for the kinds words for our team, everyone. Hopefully we can start a nice new 10 game streak this weekend.
I'm sure I'll have more thoughts but I'm about 10 minutes late for work. Oops.
