BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Some lines that made me spit up on my keyboard while laughing and drinking my morning coffee:

"Could an enemy of America like that play for anyone other than BU? It's a match made in heaven."
"All that high end talent doesn't do them any good if their goalie is a sieve, and unfortunately for BU, they have two of them."
"Also, like Gloria herself, BU's roster is a bit 'top heavy'."
"How can you tell if someone went to Harvard? Don't worry, they'll tell you."
:D

Thanks to you and the others who helped with info the other day about the feed, but it's two big thumbs down to ESPN3.

Apparently their largesse stops at the border.

It was mo' betta last year.

Oh, it isn't just international...if your cable provider isn't a partner with ESPN you don't get it either.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to.

Last year access was direct from NE's gorgeous quality feed, (as you know), without anyone asking to see my papers.

That was two years ago, last year was Conte's rubbish feed. But at least it was free and no-one tried to stop you getting it, as far as I remember.

Thanks for the correction. Now that you mention it I think I do recall that. Just confirms a recently recurring impression that time is racing by too fast.

And no, you just clicked on the link and there was the game. Downer, I was looking forward to watching both games today and maybe even seeing BC sustain a loss.

Which reminds me, anyone know how they (BC) get that icing and whipped cream and junk off their jerseys after each game?

Aren't those stains permanent?

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Well, I'll take the breaking of Carpenter's point streak in return for four-point games from Field and Anastos. If they're both getting their scoring touch back that's going to be huge for the postseason. I made it for the last couple of minutes of the second period and all of the third, and from what I saw the big nights for those players were well deserved.

Tori Sullivan moved to the Field / Anastos line and Kristyn Capizzano moved to the Leary / Trivigno line (although the changes from that line to the first line were often very staggered and Leary got a lot of ice time with Carp / Skarupa). Sullivan seems to fit in very well on that line, and of course played club hockey with Anastos, so maybe the surprise is that it took so long to happen.

The D were solid as usual; the UConn shot total wildly overestimates the number of actual saves Burt had to make. I saw one case in twenty minutes where UConn had two on the goal. They successfully made the pass but blew the shot. Amusingly in one of the later power plays we stuck Skarupa on the blue line and Bender right in front of the goal rather than the more intuitive other way round. (Skarupa was actually great on that PP and blocked a ton of clearout attempts, though she claims she's too bad at skating backwards to ever be a real D -- I suspect this is a very special kind of bad that's virtually indistinguishable from good).

Not sure what anyone did to light a fire under them, but it seems to have worked. With Minny's loss today the Eagles are looking more like a deserved #1 than for the last few weeks.

Grant, I've given you a lot of grief over the years, but that was a heck of a start to the season by your kids. It isn't easy to go that deep into the season without a loss. Well done, Eagles.

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Fantastic game tonight. No question why BC is ranked #1 nationally.

If my words back on January 31 have now proved to be prophetic (in part; we're still nowhere near goal-differential parity), note what my January 31 words further predict:

"When the hockey gods are smiling, they apportion their favors on BC and Harvard equally, as in the '62-'63 men's season when all three games were decided by a single goal, two (if memory serves) went into overtime, and one school won the Beanpot and the other the ECAC crown (I forget which was which).

"This year, it does seem we have a bit of climbing back to do in hopes of achieving similar parity but who knows, we can dream, it would be great to have two upcoming title matches to play with a Beanpot crown for one school and an NCAA championship for the other!"

See you in March!

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Well, that was a hell of a game, and all respect to Harvard for digging in, defending hard, and counterstriking when they could. The team lost, but they went out fighting enormously hard. Respect to absolutely everyone, but maybe a particular nod to the resurgent Andie Anastos and Emily Field who had perhaps their best games of the season, and to the fire that Kristyn Capizzano is bringing to the Trivigno/Leary line. BC seemed about to score all third period; if one pass through the crease had been tipped in, or one rebound had landed at a skater's stick instead of between her feet, the result would have been very different. It was incredible sitting behind the goal, watching them come in wave after wave and not quite managing to get it in the net; it wasn't the result we wanted, but it was a great, great game.

Brad Bates, the BC AD, was there in person. He's been a good supporter of the women's team and hopefully the game tonight just cemented for him how special this sport can be.

I have other thoughts about the officiating, the lines, the lack of a BC band, what went wrong etc but they can wait till tomorrow.

I'm reminded of another 3-2 game that ended a slightly longer streak, where the team on the streak nearly came back from a deep hole, didn't quite make it, but showed what they were made of even in losing. ARM, thanks for your kind words. Hopefully we'll get a chance to lock horns at Ridder this spring.

Re: BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Although I didn't see the game, my "observation" is that if there were a good game to lose. at a good time, it would be that one. Instant injection of focus, intensity, with just the right amount of vulnerability to propel them down the homestretch. I think this is going to help far more than hurt their chances to attain their season goals.
