Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

That makes him a meathead hypocrite. It doesn't change the validity of the statement.

Yep, but I believe you made a point earlier about "laughing these people off the stage." (Or something to similar effect). So, today, when the NYT editors say "Hey, let's have a guest editiorial about civility", who's the dumber than rocks editor who said, "Hey, Kanjorski's free!"?

You mean to tell me there was no one better out there than this idiot?

If we're going to laugh these people off the stage, by golly let's do so. Giving them columns in a major newspaper isn't exactly doing that, is it?

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Seriously? Are you this dense? The point of shooting the shooter would be to prevent him from shooting more people. Maybe instead of wounding 19, he wounds 10. The outcomes you present aren't even close to being the only two. I mean, would you really rather have a 20 victims with a shooter "brought to justice" than 5 victims and a shooter with a hole in his head? I know which one I'm choosing.

Anyways though, I'm more with Old Pio on this one, more guns in this situation wouldn't have solved much.

The answer to your question is "yes." In the middle of a shooting rampage, anything anybody can do to ameliorate the horror is to be vastly preferred to bringing the "shooter to justice." That's a vastly over rated conept when people are dying like flies. If we had been able to take out Hitler, he couldn't have been "brought to justice" at Nuremberg--but the lives of millions would have been spared. Not a tough call for me.

So Fox News Channel's prime time is going to a test pattern?

The damage was done in seconds...and before that nobody knew. It's not the job of vigilantes to start shooting people after the crime has been committed...to potentially include someone trying to stop the murderer or an innocent bystander.

Although possibly unpreventable, the breakdown was in law enforcement...not everyone having a concealed gun.

Anyways though, I'm more with Old Pio on this one, more guns in this situation wouldn't have solved much.

Umm...hasn't that been my position all along?

You're exactly right in that a lack of concealed carry is not the problem here.

What I take issue with is your statement that the two alternatives are bringing him to justice after the fact and innocent people getting killed by a C&C'er. There is a third possible-if not particularly likely- outcome. Specifically, the chance that this guy would have been stopped by another person with a gun. You don't seem capable of even acknowledging that possibility.

Oh, good point. I was under the apparently erroneous impression that we were discussing the particular NYT editorial. In the future, I will finish all my posts with (And FOX too) just so there's no doubts, okay?

(And FOX too).

McCarthy gets it right, as usual. The rush to take political advantage of this shocking crime is repulsive but entirely consistent with past practices.

And, for those who missed it, here are some examples of lefty "vigorous public debate," which should in no way be conflated with the exclusively right wing phenomenon of a "climate of hate."

The rationalizations will begin in three. . .two. . .one

You implied that we "were going to laugh" these guys off the stage and then gave an example. I gave another.
Or did you just mean that we're going to laugh people off the stage, but only if they disagree with us?

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Did you forget MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC?

ABC, NBC and CBS prime time programming isn't editorialized political theater. Their newscasts are more corporate puppets (try watching the BBC and you'll see that the crap that passes for "news" here is atrocious). CNN is nothing now that Larry has finally retired. Prime time on MSNBC is editorialized, but they are still a news organization (which is why no one watches them in the daytime). As we know from Roger Ailes, Fox is NOT a news organization.

Did you really just say MSNBC is a news organization and Fox is not? They're both political missile silos. You can't call one news and not the other.

They're both news organizations. They both do hard news. Of the Editorialists (and I have watched them all) in my opinion Rachel Maddow is the most fair and balanced of the bunch.

Fair enough. I find myself watching more of the news shows if I'm watching them anyways. I've watched Countdown and The Factor a bit more over the past few weeks but not a lot. I really find myself watching Morning Joe though. Great show.

Rachel Maddow though? Seriously? She has less credibility than Hannity. She can't get through a single segment without belittling someone.

I'd put Greta as the least partisan of the bunch. At least she really used to be back when she covered legal topics more. Not sure if things have changed.

Nope, FOX is a wonderful example, I agree.

Roger Ailes told us yesterday that Fox "News" was not a news organization, but chose a "side" in the debate. MSNBC has not chosen sides. Their prime time lineup is not news; it consists of editorialists. However, if you have watched it during the day (and the ratings say you haven't) it lacks the same editorial bent Fox brings to the "news." Just look at their morning show, hosted by a former Republican Congressman.
