Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Gabrielle Giffords' Arizona shooting prompts resignations

A nasty battle between factions of Legislative District 20 Republicans and fears that it could turn violent in the wake of what happened in Tucson on Saturday prompted District Chairman Anthony Miller and several others to resign.

Miller, a 43-year-old Ahwatukee Foothills resident and former campaign worker for U.S. Sen. John McCain, was re-elected to a second one-year term last month. He said constant verbal attacks after that election and Internet blog posts by some local members with Tea Party ties made him worry about his family's safety.

In an e-mail sent a few hours after Saturday's massacre in Tucson that killed six and injured 13, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Miller told state Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen he was quitting: "Today my wife of 20 yrs ask (sic) me do I think that my PCs (Precinct Committee members) will shoot at our home? So with this being said I am stepping down from LD20GOP Chairman...I will make a full statement on Monday."

The newly-elected Dist. 20 Republican secretary, Sophia Johnson of Ahwatukee, first vice chairman Roger Dickinson of Tempe and Jeff Kolb, the former district spokesman from Ahwatukee, also quit. "This singular focus on 'getting' Anthony (Miller) was one of the main reasons I chose to resign," Kolb said in an e-mail to another party activist. Kolb confirmed the contents of the e-mail to the Republic.

District 20 includes parts of Chandler, south Tempe and Ahwatukee Foothills. Republican state Rep. Bob Robson of Chandler and Sen. John McComish of Ahwatukee said they had supported Miller as chairman and were sorry to see him go. "It's too bad," McComish said. "He didn't deserve to be hounded out of office."

Sad news, Peter King. Your idea is now only the second dumbest. Dan Burton has you beat.

An aide to Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) tells CBS News that the Indiana Republican plans to introduce legislation next week that would encase the House Gallery in "a transparent and substantial material" such as Plexiglas that would keep members of the public from being able to throw explosives or make other attacks on members on the House floor.

Roger Ailes told us yesterday that Fox "News" was not a news organization, but chose a "side" in the debate. MSNBC has not chosen sides. Their prime time lineup is not news; it consists of editorialists. However, if you have watched it during the day (and the ratings say you haven't) it lacks the same editorial bent Fox brings to the "news." Just look at their morning show, hosted by a former Republican Congressman.

I loved that. Roger stuck his entire leg in him mouth on that one.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Fair enough. I find myself watching more of the news shows if I'm watching them anyways. I've watched Countdown and The Factor a bit more over the past few weeks but not a lot. I really find myself watching Morning Joe though. Great show.

Rachel Maddow though? Seriously? She has less credibility than Hannity. She can't get through a single segment without belittling someone.

I'd put Greta as the least partisan of the bunch. At least she really used to be back when she covered legal topics more. Not sure if things have changed.

Too funny. I beg to differ completely.

I like Morning Joe too.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

If we're going to laugh these people off the stage, by golly let's do so. Giving them columns in a major newspaper isn't exactly doing that, is it?

I agree with you completely.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Did you really just say MSNBC is a news organization and Fox is not? They're both political missile silos. You can't call one news and not the other.

Is "political missile silos" your coinage? If so, very nice, because it's perfect.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

"Blood libel?" Really? Is she sure she wants to start down this road?

Blood Libel, which refers to the anti-Semitic accusation from the Middle Ages that Jews killed Christian children to use their blood to make matzoh for Passover.

I dont even know where to begin with how that phrase was not what was needed to be said, whether you believe her rhetoric had something to do with this or not.

She's a narcissist. Why does this shock anybody? It's not even on the first page of the dumbest things she's ever said.

The best thing about the Echo Chamber in general and she in particular is all they do, all day every day, is cry. They are the ultimate Professional Victims, and there are a lot of resentful people out there who lap it up.

Glenn Reynolds used the term first.

So as the usual talking heads begin their "have you no decency?" routine aimed at talk radio and Republican politicians, perhaps we should turn the question around. Where is the decency in blood libel?

What a horrible choice of words. I predict that O'Reilly will have a talking points memo tonight excusing the word choice.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

I think the media's obsession with her over this is pretty sophomoric, but her statement came on this morning and I turned the channel after about four words. Didn't even want to hear it. Not even for entertainment purposes.

Twitter:

Ahmadinejad reportedly upset by Palin's message to the public, states "I was so going to use blood libel in my next UN address."
Calling bad press a blood libel is like calling a rough day at work the Holocaust.

From Wikipedia:
Blood libel (also blood accusation) refers to a false accusation or claim that religious minorities, almost always Jews, murder children to use their blood in certain aspects of their religious rituals and holidays

Yikes.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Her supporters are saying this indicates she's running for president in 2012.

I certainly feel compelled to vote for someone who uses the term "Blood Libel" in this context.

I wonder how long it will be before Fox "News" refers to her as the former Democratic governor of Alaska...

I guarantee you that Bill O'Reilly will be able to spin her out of this at Fox. Guaranteed.

The phrase was first used this week by Instapundit blogger Glenn Reynolds in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal. Reynolds wrote, "So as the usual talking heads begin their 'have you no decency?' routine aimed at talk radio and Republican politicians, perhaps we should turn the question around. Where is the decency in blood libel?"

In the National Review Online, blogger Jonah Goldberg questions Palin's and Reynolds' use of the phrase this week. "I agree entirely with Glenn's, and now Palin's, larger point. But I'm not sure either of them intended to redefine the phrase, or that they should have," he writes.

But at least one political writer thinks that Palin was using the phrase to be intentionally provocative, fully aware of its associations.

It is SO hilarious that she plagiarized the term. Her writer is probably so stupid that he thought it sounded cool when he read the Journal piece.

He means her handlers, doesn't he? Like she even has clue other than cashing in
