Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

Paternoville is no more. The name "Nittanyville" was voted into existence just yesterday. Life on campus IS moving forward. It may be my denial talking, but I think "the culture" died with the benevolent dictator that ruled over it.

Yeah, people have really moved on. Nothing like getting a snap shot with the statue of a man who helped cover up the rape of children.

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

The part that bothers me most about the statue issue isn't whether it should come down or not, but why people are screaming it must come down it now. Yes, the report issued does not look good for JP but it's not a legal document, it's not a conviction of anything - it's an opion. Based on what I read, I think the statue should be removed as well, BUT it should be removed after justice has been given due process. Whatever ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. Somewhere along way the US went back to the days of colonial witch hunts and guilty until proven innocent. I don't support any of what is said to have happened at PSU, but at the time putting pressure on the university to make decisions before the facts have been presented in a court of law is just as wrong. I know it is very unlikely, but what if we find out 18 months from now that all of the victims are simply looking for money and it's all a scam.

Is "learns in class" sitting and listening to what your teacher tells you? Or reading on your own and studying to learn what happened? :)

Not really relevant to the sustainability of the events at Kent St. :)

It has to be a conflict... Is penn state the level it's at as an academic institution without Paterno? Does this incident obviate the rest? What do you do with 50(?) years of history?

There aren't easy answers here.

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

So the NCAA beatdown is in... completely appropriate in my opinion. But it's harsh. How does a $60 million hit to the athletic department *not* affect hockey. It has to. As much as I despise Penn State... it's not exactly ideal to see them limp into D-1 hockey. And Pennsylvania isn't the most fertile recruiting ground around... are you going to be able to persuade kids from Minnesota, Massachusetts, or Canada, to take a leap on Penn State? (I bet there are a lot of especially bitter and grumpy folks in the athletic department in Minnesota today. *This* is the garbage they're stuck in a conference with? Sucks.)

It's reported they have 1.8 billion $ endowment and alumni donations are up since news of the scandel broke, so I don't think it will be the hit people think.

I think it is what needed to be done to breakdown the culture that existed there, and it's encouraging to see the new president embrace this and work towards moving forward. It may still affect some hockey recruits, but now that this has been done and all these measure put in place to ensure they continue to do the right thing then I think they be fine.

Still have to wait for the B1G possible punishment. Will they react and boot them out of conference?

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

No, they did not get booted out of the conference.

Here's what they decided:

-formally censoring Penn State
-post-season ban on Penn State for 4 years (no participation in Big Ten playoff tournaments for any PSU sports)
-cutting of big ten conference bowl revenues for 4 years ($13 million per year, to go to some endowment to help victims of abuse)

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

“@GophHkyExmnr: "...the Big Ten Conference stands behind Penn State as one of its members..." Sally Mason-Chair of B1G Council of Presidents and Chancellors”

“@GophHkyExmnr: B1G Actions: Postseason ban for four years, including B1G Championship, forfeiture of bowl money of approx $13 million. Money to charity.”

So then the answer is "yes", it will have an impact on hockey. If they can't play in the B16 Mistake playoffs for 4 years, that 3 years the hockey team won't be in the conference tourney.

I know you're putting this as just a what if ... but wow.

I was saying NO to the question someone asked if they were going to get booted out of the conference.

That's not the case. There are no postseason bans other than for the football team.

Hmm ok. I guess I'll look forward to PSU getting its *** kicked in the first few B1G playoff tourneys then.

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

The most relevant point for the Penn State hockey team is in the NCAA report:

"No current sponsored athletic team may be reduced or eliminated in order to fund this fine." So it seems that the NCAA is requiring Penn State to keep its hockey teams.
