Announced: UConn to Hockey East

Re: Announced: UConn to Hockey East

I really like UMass Hockey, but UMass Football is by far my first love. You better believe I will be at that game and I really do hope a rivalry develops across all sports with UConn.
Please stop by our tailgate before the game. It's gonna be awesome. PM me when it gets close. I'll let you know where we will be.

I was reading an online story about this on the UConn athletics site and they had an interesting poll. It asked them which program would be UConn's hockey rival be. The votes (over 50%) were overwhelmingly for Boston College. I would have thought UMass would be UConn's natural rival way more than BC would.

Funny how many rivalries BC has developed..

Re: Announced: UConn to Hockey East

Both hate each other with a blinding class-based passion.., both student bases are horrible. Let them at each other.

Hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of UConn fans couldn't care less about UMass. Maybe more so than DePaul or UCF, but they are far, far down the list of schools that UConn fans would consider "rivals".

Think he was talking about BC-UConn.

UConn-UMass was a big deal twenty years ago. Not so much anymore.

I think the same would go for UMass fans. Maybe the ones who are old enough to remember the Yankee Conference days care. Since the two don't really play in anything anymore, with the exception of UMass beating UConn in hockey every year or so, it's hard to have a rivalry.

Division 1 New England schools outside of hockey are really stupid. UConn won't play BC in basketball. BC won't play UConn in football. UConn's suing BC for leaving the Big East. BC is blocking UConn from the ACC. Now BC won't play UMass in basketball. I've also heard rumors of Northeastern blocking BU from the CAA. It's really too bad there's no NCAA Division 1 Championship for refusing to play/be in the same conference with your neighbors. We'd dominate that like the South does Football and Baseball.
I never played hockey and the day I stepped on campus at UMass, I couldn't have cared less about the sport. I went to a few games with friends and enjoyed the atmosphere at the Mullins Center and then saw Jon Quick lead UMass to the NCAAs. But the thing that got me hooked on it was going to a road game at BU the next season. My sister went there, so I was with her and my brother. UMass won 5-3, and though I'm sure BU fans will deny it, my brother (wearing a UMass Jersey) got constantly sworn at and had his life threatened several times by various BU students to the point wear security had to stand by us so people would finally leave us alone. It was a blast. I started going to more and more games. At Northeastern, at Merrimack, at UNH. It was affordable and easy to get to a ton of games. Now I can't get enough.

I really couldn't care less about basketball. I wonder if UMass played conference games against schools around here, as opposed to St. Louis and God knows who else, if the same thing might have happened.

Hockey East is awesome.

"NO one has anything to say about Providence."

I need to start posting more. Sigh. I guess the golden age of PC being the Skating Goons of HE is long gone...

Nope, I won't deny it. But on that note, no one should ever go to Mullins expecting to come out with a smile. Even if you win, you feel that humanity as a whole has already lost.

Depends how you define natural rival I guess... to me a rivalry really has to go both ways, and I'd guess that about 0.05% of BC fans will consider UConn their hockey rival.

That many?

To me you can't really predict who or what will be a rivalry. They develop organically. In football, BC-Clemson isn't one despite the attempts of the ACC and the schools to have a trophy and all that. In hockey BC-BU is, despite the fact that they don't really have the same athletic interests in any other sport. Nobody "designated" BC-BU as a rivalry. It just became one of the best in college sports. When BC was in the Big East, UConn-BC was sort of one, more because of proximity but I think played second fiddle to UConn-Syracuse, which has developed into a nice one, though it is likely to end shortly. Since UConn hasn't really played hockey at this level before, it is tough to predict who, if anyone will be our "rival." You need some close games, upsets, bizzare endings...and none of those have happened yet. That 2 fan bases don't much care for each other is helpful, but it isn't definitive without some history.

My point was more that a for a true rivalry the feeling has to be reciprocated both ways, and while right now 50% of UConn fans are viewing BC as their rival, there are close to zero BC fans that will feel the same way. It is similar for when BU plays BC in basketball.... a lot of BU kids make it out to be some big rivalry game, but to BC, its just another non-conference game against a weaker opponent. The same goes for when BC plays Duke or UNC in basketball, or when NU plays BU in hockey. There are plenty of cases where one team draws the ire of an opposing teams fan base..... but that does not make it a rivalry.
