Re: Announced: UConn to Hockey East
It is a much more realistic walk than you think, but I address that mostly in my next post.
There really aren't many good places to do that, though. UConn doesn't have a concentrated student population, because the dorms basically occupy a ring around the "academic core". Said core is very highly built up (in terms of land usage, not building height), and there aren't any good places one could drop a new hockey facility within it (not even Gampel is inside the core). Any place you'd build around the core will basically, by necessity, be isolate from some grouping of students. As it stands, it's currently an easy walk from the Hilltop area, MacMahon, West Campus, South Campus and Alumni residence halls, and all the other dorms are covered by bus.
My daughter has attended UConn for three years and does not even know where Freita's Rink is. Another point about the place is that it is not an easy place to get to on campus, not a realistic walk from the dorms.

In the long run, it may be more cost effective and a better plan to build a new hockey facility closer to the student population, and use Freitas as a womens and mens practice facility.
