Americans-Canadians

Re: Americans-Canadians

Watched a replay of the championship game (MD and Cornell) and was very impressed with the MD goalie. I thought wow, very impressive for a freshman, and she is good. Then I found out that she is 23 years old and has been with Germany and their national program for several years. Some freshman. Onmaa..can you tell me how much of this goes on in D1.

I don't have numbers, but the occasional overseas person and some Quebec players come in at slightly older ages, but normally still when they are 19 approaching 20. A freshman at 23 in the NCAA hockey world is an oddity. Typically anywhere from 3-7 recruits (3% or less) come from the "international" ranks, but even most of those are 18 or 19, coming out of their countries U18 programs and/or as young players on their National teams.

Here is a list of international recruits from years past:

Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear that it is an oddity at least, because 4 or 5 years of development plus another 4 years of eligibility hardly seems to create a fair playing field for the kids who enter the league in traditional fashion. I noticed the one from Scotland, interesting....she must have been very determined.:)

Re: Americans-Canadians

Bavaria or whatever got exactly what they wanted...attention. BRILLIANT! ;)

Brilliant indeed.....Accross the pond this is all over the news, specially in the UK and Holland. This whole campaign started two months ago. They pulled a similar stunt in a game against Mexico in May, so FIFA was on the lookout for them...So....... The group of 30 went into the stadium disguised as Danish fans and are seen on several clips wooping it up with the crowd before they were escorted out.....One of the ladies in the formal advertising campaign is the wife of one of the key players on the National team....This is going head to head with the Bud SA Lodge campaign advertised on the official FIFA site.....

Check this out: (Make sure you watch the clip where they start as Danes and finish as Dutch fans).

Re: Americans-Canadians

Montreal trades their best player in the playoffs, playoffs into three rounds where they had no business being involved in. What do you have to do these days, salary cap or not? Is hockey becoming too much of a business at the expense of the players. Parity is costly. I can accept that. Players might have a problem being loyal though, even worse than before. ;)

Re: Americans-Canadians

Silly Bi-PolarBear gets increasingly annoyed by the minute. It's proving more and more familiar. I think I hit the nail on the head a while back. Identity crisis. :)

IMO one of the best quotes on this thread except the last sentence. In hockey players are nothing but loyal. This move by Montreal really makes me shake my head. What the hell are they thinking.

I think loyalty becomes secondary to money today because players are treated like a piece of meat, and are expendable to no end. With the cap, managers cannot have loyalty to the players, therefore the players will go wherever they can get the best deal, even more so than in the past. Look at Mats Sundin, what was it, 10 million? For what? All he managed to do was tarnish his brilliant career and legacy as a Toronto Maple Leaf, IMO.

Re: Americans-Canadians

26 Canadians and 21 Americans in the first two rounds of the draft. It's getting tighter. Canadians dominated the top of the board though. :)
