Americans-Canadians

Re: Americans-Canadians

Well, it's an all American final for the cup. Close to thirty Canadians in the starting lineup combined with both clubs. Not too shabby. Have to go with Chicago in six, as I picked them to win it all before the playoffs started. Voodoo does not apply here. :)

Yup..sparks will be flying as Mrs. Fighting is a huge Hawk's fan. Although damp, it's nice and cool down here in the basement. The bed in the extra room is a little uncomfortable and the portable TV screen is a tad small but the dog does come down to visit every once in awhile...

I predicted some time ago that the Hawks should win the Stanley Cup this year...until the improbable happened and the Flyers took the 8th and final playoff spot after tieing the Rangers late 1-1 in the last game of the season and eventually getting into 8th and final playoff spot in the East by virtue of winning the shootout.

Of course then came the 2nd round unbelievable (historical) comeback against Boston without two of their top scorers in the lineup out with foot injuries and D man Laperierre out from blocking a shot with his face. Oh and wait...then goaler Boucher goes out with a season ending injury and Leighton gets parachuted in on the first game he is back from injury?

Couple all this with the fact that Marian Hosa, who came over to the Black Hawks this year, left Pittsburgh 2 years ago saying he wanted to go somewhere to win the cup? He shuffles off to Detroit only to have Pittsburgh take Detroit out in the playoffs that year and eventually go on to win the cup. This guy is just plain bad luck!

Lastly... IIRC only one foreign goaltender has ever been in net on a Stanley Cup winning team. Nikolai Khabibulin and the Tampa bay lightning beat the Calgary Flames in 7 games in 03/04. Antti Niemi for the Hawks is from Vantaa, Finland, Michael Leighton for the Flyers is from Petrolia, Ontario...

VooDoo does not apply here CHG? I would submit as the 2 seed in the West plays the 8 seed out of the East for all the marbles...this series has VooDoo written all over it. Should be a dandy!

My predictions...

From my heart - Flyers in 7 :D

From my head and being able to move back upstairs - Hawks in 6 :o

I was being a little sarcastic with the Voodoo stuff, knew you'd be all over it with everything that's going on. Lot's of crazy stuff, especially with Philly. No secret though how they did it, neutralize the best players with a strong trap, sealing up the middle of the ice. Pitt and the Caps were too arrogant to key on anybody or anything and it cost them. Bad coaching in my books. I'm surprised though that you never mentioned the touching (or the lack thereof) of the conference trophies. Now Voodoo has reared it's ugly head in that situation before huh. Well, if that's what you want to believe. ;) By the way, nothing like taking both teams in your prediction. The way I see it, you can't lose.:D Now there is some Voodoo!

Interesting story on Hossa that deserves expanding....

Hossa was paraded out of Ottawa cause he wanted more money...
..He was traded to the trashers for none other than a Danny Heatley...

Well these guys have a lot in common....
Both have been duds in the playoffs and are pricey commodities...

Heatley went on to score lots in the regular season, but was a dud in the playoffs when it counted for years. Then he was not happy with the new coach, and demanded a trade. Then he did not wanna go to Edmonton, so he vetoed the trade. After collecting a 4 mil bonus for staying with the Sens until July 1, he finally allows a trade to the Sharks and proceeds to lay another egg in the playoffs.

Back to Hossa..he gets too expensive in Hot Lanta and becomes a renta player at the deadline for the Penguins, making it to the final with them right away before losing to the Wings. So he sais, I wanna play for a winner and heads off to mo-town, only to lose with them the next year in the the final against, you guessed it, his former team the Penguins. So he is a free agent again and looks west to another Stanley cup contender with lots of young guns, named the Hawks. So here he is, three years in a row in the Stanley cup final with three different teams. If he looses again, I'm sure that is some record, doing it with three different teams, three years in a row. This is also Pronger's third time in the final with a third team, but not in consecutive years, and he did win the cup one year with the Ducks.

Re: Americans-Canadians

I have to go with the Blackhawks in six, although Philadelphia is playing some pretty good hockey right now. There's nothing like the NHL Playoffs! I don't know what to watch on these off nights when there is no hockey on. It's gonna be a letdown in our house when the playoffs are over. I gained a new respect for Duncan Keith the other day when he took that puck to the choppers and lost seven teeth, and still came back into the game. Seven teeth, are you kidding me?!? Yeah, when hockey season ends, I'll have to wait two months for Ohio State football season. I would mention my Cleveland Indians, but I think they are already mathematically eliminated from the postseason. :D

I just play this a couple of times a night when we are between games. It seems to help bridge the gap...:)

Had the (old:( ) HNIC theme as my ringtone on my old cell phone..downloaded it for free somewhere, but can't find it again. I may have to go to the cell store and see if they can retrieve off the old sim card!

Da-nat-na-na--naaah! Da-nat-na-na-na-na-ahhh!

That screams Canadian!

Been listning to that since I was like about two...still sends shivers up my spine!

Found this excerpt from the TSN site...

When the Montreal Canadiens were eliminated on Monday, it meant that the Stanley Cup would definitely be claimed by an American-based team for the 16th straight season.

For a few strange weeks prior to that, there had been no shortage of Toronto Maple Leafs fans who chose to ignore traditional rivalries and decided instead to cheer for the lone remaining Canadian team in the playoffs, in many cases despite their best judgment!

While hockey fans in this country may lament the fact that the Cup will not be coming "home," there will still be plenty of Canadian content in the final.

The Flyers dressed 14 players from the Great White North in their series-clinching victory over the Habs in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference championship. All four of the team's goals were scored by Canuck snipers, and their netminder Michael Leighton, who made 25 saves in the encounter, calls Petrolia, Ontario home.

In addition, Chris Pronger and Mike Richards helped Canada capture gold at the Winter Olympic Games this past February in Vancouver.

On the flipside, there is no shortage of "maple syrup slurping hosers" on the Blackhawks' roster either. Chi-town's winning lineup against the Sharks starred 15 Canadian skaters including Olympians Duncan Keith, Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook.

Of the 40 players who touched the ice in the clinching game for either team, 29 of them stand on guard when they hear O Canada.

To further accentuate the ever-present Canadiana of the Finals, of the 11 players who do not carry a Canadian passport, five of them honed their skills for at least one season in the CHL, including key contributors such as Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa and Dustin Byfuglien.

In terms of key contributions, one only has to look as far as the playoff scoring leaders, where Toews and Richards are currently sitting No. 1 and 2. Both are their teams' respective captains, both are Olympic heroes and both were born North of the 49th parallel; Toews in Winnipeg, while Richards was raised in Kenora, Ontario.

With so much home-grown talent at both teams' disposal, what is a Canadian hockey fan to do?

It's funny, I was setting around in the late 80's with some buddies watching the Stanley Cup Finals between Edmonton and Philadelphia. I think it was the 1987-88 season, actually. I was for Edmonton because I was a big Gretzy fan (who wasn't back then). My one friend says, "I gotta go with Philadelphia because I gotta root for the American team." I basically laughed and told him to check the roster for Philadelphia and see how many are actually Americans. In regard to all the Team Canada guys, that series between San Jose and Chicago was a who's who of gold medal winners. I counted seven gold medal winners in that series. There may have been more. I may have missed a couple.

From 83 to 90 there was a stretch of 8 years in a row with an Alberta team in the final every year( aka the "Battle of Alberta years"), and they won it 6 out of those 8 years. The victors in the other two years during that stretch were the Islanders (83) and the Habs (86). Been pretty dry for Canuck teams ever since.....

...Only 5 times a Canuck based team even made it to the final since 1990, and only one Cup win in that 20 year stretch.

The last time with an All Canuck final was in 89 (Flames over Habs)...21 Years
The last time a Canuck team won was in 93 (Habs)....17 Years
Since then Canuck teams have been in the final only 4 times.
(Canucks in 94, Flames in 04, Oilers in 06 and Sens in 07).
Dryspell has been the hardest for the two most gloried franchises
Habs have only been to the semi's once since they won it in 93
Leafs have only been to the semi's 4 times since they won it in 67, and never been back in the final since expansion started in 68.

I am hoping the Leafs can get things turned around. It doesn't seem right that one of the NHL's most storied franchises is struggling like that. Of course, I am a Jackets fan, so I know all about struggling franchises. I love having a team here, though. Wouldn't trade them for anything. The city fathers of Columbus better realize how important they are and not let them move. Well, I need to cut myself off on that. Don't want to get us all off on a tangent.

Good one!

5 4 Fighting, thanks for sharing! That will help! :)

Oh.. there is one other way to keep hockey on the forefront of your mind, move to Calgary.

Heavy snow fall warnings are in effect for Calgary and Southern Alberta as they are expecting 10-20 cm overnight and into tommorow! Yikes

I'm looking out my office window as I write...and can't see the other side of the street!

Yahooo!

That's CRAZY! We're in the middle of a week long mid-summer type heat wave. Yesterday was apparently at 45 year record high temps of 30-something....I read something about this weather pattern having blown in from Arizona though so thankfully not the usual humidity we typically get with it courtesy of the Ohio valley. Love ya Arizona! :)
