All Things Denver XXXIII

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

Still have power here in Maine. Wind is kicking up but no rain yet. We need to send positive vibes out to the crew of the HMS Bounty, the replica used in lots of films. As of now 14 are in life rafts and 2 are missing. I think the boat has sunk. As a boat Captain, I have to ask what in the world were they doing out there now?

A replica 18th century sailing vessel would seem to be one you wouldn't want near heavy seas, let alone a hurricane.

You are correct sir!! I need to reserve comment out of respect for the Captain and crew!!

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

No one was more surprised than me. Product placement is key. :-)

DU #3 in the polls although we did receive more #1 votes than the second ranked Gophers. SCSU is #18.

Not a surprise. I'm keeping in mind that Denver has yet to play away from home. I want to see how the do on the road before making any judgements. So far so good...but in friendly confines.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

And to our Pioneers out on the East coast...Stay safe guys!

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

One half billion people without power in NY, NJ & CT. I am one of the lucky ones who never lost power although it flickered many times. Trees are down all over the place. There is no public transportation (LIRR, Metro-North, NJ Transit and NYC subway & buses) in the NY metro area. Tunnels are flooded and all of the bridges are still closed. All of the roads in the county I live in (Nassau) are closed. High tides last night were 9 feet above normal high tide. The entire south shore of Long Island south from Merrick Rd/Montauk Highway (RT 27A) was flooded at last night's high tide. There are 50 houses in Breezy Point, Queens that are currently on fire. This storm now reaches from Illinois to the East Coast.

Settle down Dr. Evil.

I think you mean half million without power. :-)

Glad you still have the lights on and your family made it through safely.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

du78, what happened to the crane? Haven't heard about it today

Still dangling up above 57th Street. I am so lucky that I never lost power (one of the 10 percenters on LI). Still no public transportation today, schools are still closed. South shore of Long Island and Jersey Shore have been devastated. Downtown Manhattan basically became the Hudson and East Rivers from the storm surge.

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

LaLeggia, Makowski, and Quentin Shore nominated for WCHA weekly honors.

SCSU's Drew LaBlanc and Finnish Frershman Kalle Kossila were 2 of the week's winners.

We need Jussi to show up the Finnish Frosh.
:)

Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

This has been cracking me up for days!!

Me too. I haven't heard from Dr. Demento in days (us old movie buffs stay in touch). I'm certain it's just a matter of power. But I'd really like to get an e-mail from him, know what I mean?

Let's get back to sailing ships and heavy seas for a minute. All I know about sailing I learned by skippering Snipes on Portage Lake, MI. But they had a pretty substantial dagger board, IIRC. Would a replica 19th century vessel have a significant keel? Maybe even more than the original?

Portage Lake was connected to Lake Michigan by a channel. And several times a summer when the weather was heavy, we'd wake up at Camp Tosebo to discover that a very large sailing vessel had ducked in to get to safer waters. Always a big thrill, of course. Also, on one trip to Mackinac Island we saw the ship that was the first to cross the line in the Chicago/Mackinac race. Didn't win, of course, because of handicap. It was owned by Standard Oil and was the biggest sailing ship on the Great Lakes at the time, like 100 feet. It was a big sucker, for sure. Can't remember the name. But she got in so far ahead of everyone else, her crew had time to get to the Pink Pony, get plastered, sober up, and meet the crews of other boats as they came in so they could get plastered again! IIRC, this ship had previously been owned by Marjorie Meriweather Post, who had a couple of dollars floating around.

I would suspect you are right. The fact that it was a replica doesn't mean it wasn't seaworthy. This particular boat, 180', had a major refit in 2006 in Boothbay harbor Maine. Very reputable yard. This past summer, the "Bounty", was docked at another boatyard in Belfast Maine for some more modifications. They also allowed tourists as well as locals to tour the boat. One of my students, last name Pitcairn, did such a tour. How about that for irony??? (Pitcairn Island, site of the mutineers hiding place). Further irony, the one female crew member that perished was named Charlotte Christian. Descendent of Fletcher Christian!!!!! Cue twilight zone music!!!!

RPI posters have also expressed their concern, but, knowing where he lives, figure he in the "powerless" zone.
He maybe saving his batteries for the RPI-Union series this weekend.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. He said he and his wife and the cats were prepared to hunker down. I'm not exactly worried. But I would like to hear from him. IIRC, he said he didn't have a generator. One of the many images remaining from Katrina was a guy relaxing on the balcony of his French Quarter apartment, generator humming in the back ground, cold drink in hand, shotgun across his lap.

That is spooky. Still can't find the name of that big sailing sucker I saw as a kid. The one owned by Marjorie M. Post was the Sea Cloud. 356 foot, four masted barque, with a crew of 60. Don't throw me in that briar patch. I'd live on that big beauty, like Quincy. She owned General Foods and was married to E. F. Hutton. I guess you'd call that a power couple. She was the richest woman in America for many years, worth billions.

Dr Evil [du78] & family are doing well. They made it through the storm and then lost power later that morning, likely when a transformer blew out.

His neighborhood in Long Island was fine due to high elevation, except for any houses or cars that were damaged by falling trees.

He's been charging his cell phone in a car, but it has been cold in the house.

The LetsGoDU Emergency Management Agency* [LEMA] FedEx'd him a generator yesterday from Houston. UPDATE - Generator arrived

Thought he made it thru relatively unscathed, but the situation there is obviosly still unsettled. In his absence or until he reappears, just let me say...

IT'S
GAME DAY!
