Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Magness Man, that's not at all what happened with swami. He'll be back someday, but let's talk hockey for now. Great win for DU! Now they just have to avoid the praise getting to their heads, and keep working hard on improving. It's a long season, but that was a promising start.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

I suspect he may have been at the game tonight. I think Damien might have said he was--not sure.

He was definitely there.

I think Boston and Denver have a nice host thing going on.

Denver in Boston in 2004 - national title.

BC goes to Denver in 2008 - national title.

BC goes to Denver in 2010 - sweep.

Denver goes to Boston in 2011 - win at Conte.

I have to admit that I didn't feel great about this weekend. Whatever happens this afternoon I'll be happy with the weekend. Of course, I'll be a lot happier if the guys put up two more points.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Well, well, well we're back to earth tonight. Classic case of not showing up after a big win. 2 shorties --nothing like opening old wounds. Ouch!

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

It was great seeing DG last night and the Boone! We looked flat most of the game and I'm afraid Murray did not look sharp. He was coughing up huge rebounds and mishandled the puck once which lead to the first shorty. The big story though was the comeback. Half way through the 3rd period, we came roaring back and shut up the crowd. The real bummer was while were buzzing with 6 attackers and almost scoring over and over, the ref called a penalty on Beau B. with 18 seconds left. Murray returned, face off was in our end and the game ended. I had two old time BU fans that said the ref. ruined a great game. There is an * to this game in my mind. The guys should be proud how they fought back. Had they not called that penalty we just may of scored. ****.... Good weekend all around.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

It seems like the crap game after the good game is a recurring theme in recent years. Still, it does seem like the team responded in the third. There are all kinds of ways that DU could have come out of this weekend with 4 points, but it seems like number one would be to not have played like **** in the second period last night.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

I think it's safe to say there will be some emphasis on special teams this week. Jimbo might know if DU's given up two shorties on the same penalty before, but I'm thinking there's a good chance it hasn't happended since the Soviets did it to us in '68. If so, I was at one game and listening to the other. "Bench the SOB!"

I thought for a minute Gwoz was going to bench Murray and put in Hope!!! Hope is a diminutive goalie. I really want to see the Finn come back and then Great Brittain!! By the way, Makowski looked like Matt Carle last night, he is awesome!!!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Olkinuora get Saturday's game. He looked pretty good in the exhibition games and I could see the coaches wanting to get a look at him in WCHA action, especially since DU is not playing UND, CC, UMD, etc.

Makowski has to be our most underrated player. I thought from the beginning of last season that he looked really good but a lot of other people didn't share my opinion. He made the all-rookie team and is easily the best all-around defenseman on the roster. He can skate pretty well, usually doesn't forget he's firstly a defenseman, shows toughness, makes crisp passes and has a rocket from the point. I believe he almost took an offer from Miami but waited an extra year in the USHL in order to come here; I am definitely happy he made that decision.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Certainly don't mean to flame here, you guys seem like a very likeable bunch, but the late penalty wasn't at all questionable in terms of the official's assessment of the rule. As I noted in the BU thread, there's a claim to be made about swallowing the whistle in that scenario, but it was a textbook hold. Chiasson got a step on the DU forward off the faceoff, who then reached back and held him to prevent him from pressuring the point dman who received the faceoff. The official was looking right at it, and it was pretty clear to me looking right at it. That said, your team looked great for the better part of the game last night, and with a decent goaltender would've very likely won. I was all but convinced you'd tie it up in those last 22 seconds. Hope all those who came out enjoyed their stay in town, anyone who beats the Igles gets points in my book.

This highlights the worry about having to rely on Murray. He has the tools but just giving away a freebie goal is totally unacceptable, especially when it ends up being a one goal game. He played OK overall but he just has to cut out the boneheaded plays.

The penalty call was absolutely questionable. Two sides see it differently (no surprise there). I was at the game, saw the replay and didn't see any "hold" that should have been called. You don't see a team/coaches react unanimously like DU did if the penalty wasn't at the very least questionable.

As for Murray, can't really blame him on three of the four goals, but ya, the obvious one killer mistake.

The exact same penalty, from the exact same faceoff circle, in the exact same situation, was called against BU earlier in the game.

The timing was more damaging to the Pioneers. If a penalty is to be called, the timing should not matter.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

I know which one you're referring to. Honestly didn't see that one, but if it was the exact same, then I don't like that call either. They were most certainly arguing the actual call though, not just the timing.
