All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I can live with that, although what purpose would be served by keeping it a secret 'til game time is beyond me.

Well, we are dealing with the masterminds behind the WCHA, so who knows what they are thinking...
;)

It seems so strange for the WCHA to take so long to respond. It is now Thursday afternoon.

No doubt. I would have thought they could have been done reviewing the incident by Tuesday at least. Strange.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Jesse's dad has been quoted that the "culture" of hockey needs to be changed. The first step towards changing the "culture" would be to suspend any player who makes a hit to the head whether on purpose or not. Obviously a grey area hit like this one may not warrant a suspension as long as one where there was obvious intent. Hits to the head have got to be stopped.
This Hockey East fan couldn't agree more. Hits to the head, whether "intentional" or "inadvertent" (good luck objectively defining those terms), have got to be reduced substantially.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Hey, what if the NC$$ gives up on its jihad against Native American symbols and mascots long enough to establish some sort of commission to see what can be done (rules, equipment, etc)? Nah, unrealistic. Much more important to get rid of Chief Illiniwek or force a retrofit of REA than it is to see if we can't avoid any more Martins or Genoways. You gotta have priorities.

Maybe they had to run this by some lawyers...

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Out of the blue questions time...

Next weekend I will be starting the long drive from WI to my new home in Phoenix. I'm taking the "scenic" route through CO and down through northern AZ, and the timing might work out that I could hit up the Friday night DU/MSUM game. How hard would it be to get a ticket right at gametime? Also, are any of the USCHO posters planning on attending as well? It would be fun to meet some of you in person (I think I've only met CO14ers and kscant).

I figure it would be a nice way to break up the 29 hour drive. :D

I'm trying to recall, didn't we with Paukovich? To answer the question, I don't expect UND to add to his suspension, but I believe they should.

I was just thinking about that. Yes, I'm almost sure that Gwoz game him a suspension in addition to the one the WCHA gave him.

I'm not going to lose any sleep about what they do or don't do here (even though I think giving Malone an additional game would be appropriate). And I'm not being passive-aggressive, either. I just don't care. It won't help Jesse and it won't help DU, so I say let them do what they think is appropriate and move on.

IIRC, Gwoz did suspend Paukovich for an extra game. I have to disagree, at least slightly, that Malone's hit is in the same class. Yes, the injuries were both tragic, THAT is not in question. IMO, Paukivich's hit on Bina was nothing short of a dirty hit. Malone's hit on Martin was definitely a penalty, but I wouldn't define it as dirty.

Not that it matters to the WCHA. 1 game seems to be the going rate no matter what.

That's what UND posters are saying. The hit on Genoway was as deliberate as can be determined without a polygraph. I don't recall the Paukovich hit on Bina. But if it was deliberate, he certainly deserved additional punishment. Although as I've said, (Old Pio Theorem) if what we're trying to do is avoid these catastrophic incidents, it isn't necessarily a gigantic miscarriage of justice to punish a guy by sitting him down a couple of games--if (big if) it sends a message that players need to guard against these kinds of hits (regardless of intent). My focus now is on Jesse, and unless they organize a parade for Malone, I have no concern about additional punishment for him.

Yep, see you there

Mike Chambers pre-game report in the Denver Post. A decision on Jesse's surgery will be made this morning.

DU coach George Gwozdecky visited Martin in his Minneapolis hospital room Wednesday. He took video of Martin and showed the team on Thursday "so at least they know how he's doing."

So, how is he doing?

"He was cracking jokes and being his typical dry, sarcastic self at times. We had some pretty good laughs," Gwozdecky said. "And there are times where, I don't want to say he drops off, but he gets tired, whether it's the medication or what have you. But he's doing well. According to (father) Terry (Martin) he had a good day."

Terry Martin confirmed today's plan.

"The neurosurgeons from a number of sources are reviewing the material independently and are going to concur on a strategy (this) morning, and we should be confirmed for surgery thereafter," Martin said.

Said Ostrow: "We just hope surgery goes well. It will for sure be at the back of everyone's mind, but we've been working the whole week to focus on the ice. When we step on the ice, it's all hockey, all about beating our rival CC.

"It's a tough thing, because Jesse is so close to us, but we still have a job to do and Jesse would want us to win these games."
