Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I have been in touch with the CC athletic deparment this week, and as of today, it has been confirmed that after the DU lineup is introduced Saturday night at World Arena, there will be a short statement read about Jesse before they proceed with the introduction of the CC players. I was told that CC did not want to do anything too drawn out because of the emotional toll it could take on DU before the game, and that they wanted to make sure DU was okay with whatever they did. The DU staff has seen the statement and it has been approved and well received. So EVERYONE be in or at your seats before the lineups are introduced. All of the CC and DU fans at this game need to come together and applaud Jesse because some things are far bigger than a hockey rivalry.

Great support and class from our traditional rivals.

Thanks

I just got word from Magness that the team has signed the banner and it is now being signed by the students and fans at the barbecue.

Great win for DU tonight!
Great win for Jesse Martin tonight!
The team was there for him. The boys brought it to make sure they won it for Jesse.

Have to give the coaches, staff and the team credit for overcoming the emotions of the last week. Jesse may have been the 7th man tonight, but the DU Community was there too.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Wow! Great effort by the boys tonight. They played with the most fire in their belly for the year by far. Big difference in talent between these two teams. Can't wait to see our guys on the big sheet in the cement toilet tomorrow night. Got off your couch people and make the drive! Hats off to CC for the plan to honor Marty in the pregame.

PS. I love it when Kelty (#57) works the lines for the CC games. Is that divine providence or what? :D
PPS I had to leave Magness early tonight because my daughter is taking the SAT's in the morning. I loved listening to Rycroft do the color on the radio. He knows the game and the program really well. Good to have someone alongside of Stick that has a deeper understanding of this amazing game. They should put him on the payroll. All it work take is a small percentage of the take at the carving table.

The Jesse Martin banner is on its way to Minneapolis. Thanks to DU alum Miller Baird ('72) and his wife Debbie for all the work and effort they put into getting the banner and having it signed. Also a big thank you to Angel Field in organizing the banner signing on the DU side. She was the one responsible for getting the team to sign it and get the tables, etc. for Miller and his crew to use. You find some photos of the banner here.

According to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post.

The Pioneers came into Friday expecting Martin to be recovering from surgery in a Minneapolis hospital to stabilize his neck. However, Martin on Friday was instead transferred to a hospital in nearby St. Paul, Minn., and surgery was postponed until Monday, and another surgical team has been assembled.

I've seen a lot of DU teams come and go, but this team has one of the very best work ethics I've seen in a long time. They may not have jaw-dropping talent, and they sure don't have a great deal of depth, but they really work their butts off out there, and what good results they've been able to post to date are based on that work rate.

Even with all the emotion in the barn last night, the Pioneers were able to channel it and got the result they deserved.

Should be interesting to see what this quick, hard working team can do on a big ice sheet. At UVM, DU did well on the 200 x 90 sheet there, but all the other games were played on NHL (200 x 85) sheets, and CSWA is a 200 x 100 sheet.

Really hard work can compensate for a lot of shortcomings. BTW, the early line is that Jay will mention the "big ice" 36 times tonight.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I've been mostly watching and not posting much the last couple of years, but I am glad to see that things are looking better for Jesse Martin than the worst-case scenario. I have two pretty funny stories about him from my brief stint as a bouncer at The Border. As I think about them, I guess neither story is probably board material, and believe me, having bounced at that bar made rooting for one or two specific DU players pretty tough, but Jesse was definitely not one of them. I hope he is well. Being able to play competitive hockey again would sure be nice, but for now, here's hoping that he is able to lead a normal, relatively pain-free life with full use of his body.

DU women's soccer lost on penalty kicks to Middle Tennessee in the Sun Belt Championship Game. As a result, they don't get the NCAA Sun Belt autobid and their season could be over, even though they were 19-3 on the year. Tough way to lose.

On the positive side though, the Rapids won in Penalty Kicks over Columbus. They'll host San Jose next Saturday at Dick's for the Eastern (yes, Eastern) Conference Final.

As for the game tonight, I've been really impressed with Zucker so far, and I think he puts one in the nets to take down CC. I thought Denver would be a 4-6 place team in the WCHA this year, but I really think if they can continue to get impressive goalie play they can challenge for a top 2 spot.

Better not have any TO's in Zucker's zip code or he'll make you pay.
