All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I've been meaning to thank you for standing up for us over the weekend. Like everybody else, I went to bed Saturday, savoring an outstanding win and secure in the "knowledge" that Jesse wasn't seriously hurt. When I got online Sunday I was stunned, dismayed and shocked at the nature of his injury and the potential it might have to seriously impact the rest of his life.

Then I wandered over to the DU/UND thread and was stunned, dismayed and shocked all over again at the general tenor of the Sioux fans' postings (right up front, I understand those folks don't necessarily represent the main body of their fans). There was a lot of blaming the victim: "he should have had his head up" There was a lot discussion about how Malone had been hosed by the call. Some wondering whether, because of the call, he'd be unavailable to them this weekend (I thought that was particularly insensitive). And, of course, the "Does DU even know how to play hockey" comment. Well, I was so angry I probably broke loose about 5 pounds of plaque from my arteries.

And I endeavored to chastise them about their evident lack of empathy and misplaced priorities. I suggested they think back to when Genoway was hurt or even Bina, and they might have some idea of how we were feeling. This was met with suggestions that the incidents were different, the guy went out of his way to hit Genoway, etc. etc. Thus completely missing the point I was trying to make. I think it was SJ Hovey who finally pointed out the "shoe was on the other foot," and maybe they could put down their green pom pons just for a second.

But I'll tell you this, I didn't see a single post from anyone suggesting Malone acted deliberately or that anything should happen to him as a result of this incident. Most DU posters seemed to understand (including me) that there were issues here far more important than what the referees did, or whether the boy will be permitted to play against UMD. By contrast, after the Bina incident, we were subjected to weeks (months?) of "Punkovich" references, assertions that he acted deliberately and suggestions that something bad SHOULD happen to him.

So even though some of my fellow DU posters politely but firmly suggested I shut up, I still think, collectively, we handled this situation pretty well. No raving, no ranting, no threats (although some of my language harkened back to my days in the AF). And when we learned of Jesse's incredibly generous gesture, well, we were amazed. Sometimes adversity DOES bring out the best in people. And I want to emphasize again I'm sure vast majority of Sioux fans were shocked by what heppened and want only the best for Jesse.

The focus here should be on that excellent young man, suffering pain and discomfort, wearing that medievel torture device to stabalize his head and neck, facing possible delicate surgery and wondering and worrying what the future will bring. So thanks for helping out. I was filled with righteous anger but it was misplaced, I see that now.
The thing is, certain things go far beyond a rivalry on the ice. Many of my favorite posters on this board happen to come from the arch-rival of my favorite team. Most Sioux fans handled things well, but there was one in particular that got under my skin (the guy who made the comment about Jesse/DU not knowing how to play hockey) and I wanted to step in as a more neutral party and try to get that person to shut up. There were some things said late Sunday night in that thread that most of you probably missed because it was deleted, but I just couldn't let some comments go. And hey, I got called some names by that guy, too, so it wasn't just you, Old Pio.;) You were understandably agitated and upset. That idiot purposely made it worse.

I hope we can do something for Jesse at the game at CSWA on Saturday night, no matter how big or how small.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Here is Gwoz's press conference from this afternoon. He answers a lot of the questions we have all been asking or wondering about. He is going to visit Jesse tomorrow.

You've been a big help throughout, and the banner is a capital idea. We all thank you. And Jesse surely will thank you, too.

Any gesture would be greatly appreciated, by Jesse and by DU fans, I assure you.

Hey! ;)

I'd go get my post from that thread, but I deleted the thread after the bickering was continuing. There was no need for that, and since the Jesse Martin thread had started...that was a much better outlet for Jesse updates without having to sift through the "garbage".

Thanks brian for deleting the thread.
Old Pio. i understand your response. There were times this weekend that I wanted to say something tacky in response to or about some of the posts I read. But somewhere, somehow I managed to employ a little self discipline, Because Jesse Martin's health and recovery are what matters.

What is impressive to me:
Jesse Martin
Support from the DU community
Health care professionals in Grand Forks and Minneapolis
The support coming from all over the US and Canada

The banner is MSBDU's idea who is a regular contributor/commentator on the LetsGoDU site. I think one of the interesting things Gwoz noted is that neither ref saw the hit but one of the linesmen did. That is why there was no initial call by the refs. The officials got together and made the right call as the linesman said there was a hit to the head. There was no giving a penalty just because a player got hurt and was laying on the ice. You can see in the video how concerned Gwoz is about Jesse and the team. Jesse's teammates know it could just as easily have been one of them. This is going to be one of the thoughest weeks he and the team will have to go through.

JS:

Thanks.

You've had the respect of all Pioneer fans on the board for many years now for your ability to see the bigger picture.

I apologize for being one of those bickering people in that thread as well, but I felt the need to call out one particular UND poster. You handled it well by getting rid of all of it.

Agreed. Ultimately, despite my shortcomings, I generally get to where I need to be. :)

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

The "Get Well Soon" Banner fans will be signing on Saturday night. Thanks to MSBDU for getting this sign made.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

You know, I think the current point of contention between Gwoz & Chambers is that Gwoz was pretty emphatic in that video that Malone's hit was dirty (I agree), based on the head contact (I agree), and Chambers stated pretty much the opposite in an article recently -- that the hit was legal. Maybe that is where the "making stuff up" fiasco started at, that Gwoz thinks Chambers is making up stuff about an obviously illegal hit being legal? Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with how Chambers reported on Jesse"s condition? Just a thought...

EDIT: Gwoz can be kind of cryptic in his talk, so misunderstanding his intentions is not unrealistic. Also, I didn't see how Gwoz criticized Chambers, just that Chambers was upset that he had.

Gwoz did go a little out of his way to discredit Mike in front of his media peers, likely because Gwoz likes to control the story and in this case, he wasn't able to control it because Chambers was moving faster and deeper than DU could move on it. Gwoz said that at the time that the hit was not malicious or dirty initially, but he never said it was a legal hit. Jesse Martin said it. And today, Gwoz made sure that everyone knew that he thinks the hit wasn't legal. I think Gwoz did not come out with the illegal hit contention at the time becuase he did not want to inflame the story further. But clearly, he is bothered by the results and perhaps he thinks it could have been avoided or that Malone hit Martin's head when he could have hit other areas. It could also be that he's had a lot of time to watch the video and make a better determination as to his view of Malone's actions.

Everyone knows the game is played at high speeds by fully fit, strong and armored players. The best way to see reduced hits to the head is to take away the facemasks, so that players do not feel invincible out there.

Yeah, he essentially says the same thing in the video that he said in the Edmonton Journal:

Martin's university coach, George Gwozdecky, said it was a physical game, but the hit wasn't malicious.

"It was not an attempt to injure," he said. "It was not dirty, but certainly there was contact with the head which is a penalty in the rule books nowadays."

Sorry to butt in but...I agree with gwoz. it didn't appear legal to me and did appear that in fact the kid took some relish in seeing him coming with his head down, though I don't think he intended to injure him. I was pretty surprised that at least from what I saw, the ref did not have his hand up for any type of penalty until it became obvious that jesse was hurt.

I am not at all convinced that removing face protection would do the job. When I played, which was admittedly a long time ago, no one gave any consideration to the consequences of an action while on the ice. Witness Jaques Plante. At least for us it didn't make the least difference, maybe it does now though.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Hey guys, for those of us that cannot be there to sign the banner, is there anyway we get our best wishes to Jesse and his family? I would like to think that maybe they read this forum, but as dedicated as we are to him and this team, I would love for him to know how much we are pulling for him. any ideas?, LetsGoDu site maybe?

Chambers update--Atlanta Thrashers check in.

Nice gesture by some of the DU alums and families in Minneapolis.

A handful of DU alumni living in Minnesota and fathers of former Pioneers also visited Martin, who was injured from a check delivered by North Dakota senior Brad Malone.

By my recollection Jesse is the 4th Pioneer to suffer a serious neck or head injury while at DU. The first was George Congrave in the late 1950s who had a skate go into his head during practice. Although he never played again, he was a fixture in the DU athletic department for decades after until retiring. For us oldsters he was also one of the DU goal judges. Mike Aikens has also been mentioned in this thread. He also never played again after being hit by Sean Hill of Wisconsin. Gwoz mentioned in his press conference on Tuesday that Brent Cary broke his neck in a collision in practice in his first year at DU. Brent is the only one so far that was able to come back and play again.

Although it didn't happen at DU, Bill Masterton, one of the greatest players ever at DU, passed away while playing in a game for the Minnesota North Stars in 1968 against the Oakland Seals. The story is he was checked, fell backwards and hit his head on the ice. There are conflicting accounts that he was unconscious from the hit before he fell to the ice or that he was unconscious from hitting the ice. He passed away two days later in the hospital. He wasn't wearing a helmet which he had worn his whole career until playing in the NHL. He is the only NHL player to pass away while playing a game and his death spurred the movement for NHL players to be required to wear helmets. The NHL's Masterton Trophy is named after him and is given annually to a player to commemorate the perseverance and dedication to hockey embodied by Bill.
