One of the alums is getting a huge get well card made for Jesse that will be at the game on Friday night. The goal is to get over 2,000 signatures including both the DU and CC teams. The card will be sent to Jesse up in Minneapolis. A table is to be set up near one of the entrances so fans can sign. When the exact location is known, that info will be posted here and at LetsGoDU.
The story should be about Jesse and his heroic outreach to Malone.
Chambers covered the unfolding story as he should have. DU and Gwoz were not able to control a story this big the way they'd like.
Focus on Jesse.
I thought Mike Chambers did a great job of reporting, and it sounds like he had the blessing of Jesse's father to give updates. Gwoz overstepped here and should not have made those comments, especially since he obviously had no clue how Chambers got his information.
Gwoz is likely under tremendous, tremendous stress right now. He has a player lying in a Minneapolis hospital without a clear prognosis for a life-altering event. He's likely never had a player injury of this magnitude before. Additionally, he's rapidly losing player after player to injury. He's down at least 5 regulars right now out of the lineup - Martin, Murray, Jackson, Phillips and Nick Shore going into rivalry week. Add in the stress of the UND rivalry, which clearly agitates him as well, and the back story of an ongoing contract issue and he's likely seething inside. Gwoz, like most coaches, also likes to have total control of the news on his team, and this story is bigger than what he or DU can control. I think Mike Chambers took the brunt of Gwoz' frustrations unfairly.
I hope in the passage of time, Gwoz will make up with Mike.
This is the kind of attention that coaches of big time football and basketball programs have to deal with daily. George is in uncharted territory, and made a mistake. Understandable, but a mistake nonetheless.
I agree 100%. George is very smart and he's used to a very high degree of control and when you add an unprecedented level of stress to a lack of control, that's right where mistakes happen.
